A set of shackles, or simply shackles, is a type of chain-like item that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. It has a default material of iron.

Generation

Shackles are not randomly generated, although they can be wished for or found in bones.

Throne rooms containing prisoners will have each individual prisoner monster forcibly equipped with a set of shackles in lieu of their normal monster starting inventory (which is placed in the throne room's chest) during level creation.

Some levels of the Drow Healer quest have plague victims that are generated with shackles tethering them in place during level creation.

Description

Shackles cannot normally be worn or put on, and shackles found on monsters are treated much like an iron chain tethering a heavy iron ball to a punished hero. Untrapping a monster from a set of shackles has a chance of pacifying or taming the monster. Monsters will not use this item.

When used as an improvised weapon, a set of shackles inflicts blunt damage and deals 1d4 base damage to all monsters. Shackles cannot carry an enchantment.

Eating a set of shackles, e.g. as a hero polymorphed into a metallivore or having a metallivore monster eat a stray pair of shackles, grants 200 nutrition.
