忍者生成时有3⁄4的概率携带一堆手里剑，否则会携带一堆飞镖[3]。僧侣职业的玩家怪物生成时有1⁄3的概率携带一堆手里剑，否则会携带一把近战武器[4]。

手里剑是唯一使用手里剑技能的武器。手里剑没有对应的神器武器。
策略
单片手里剑的重量仅有1 aum，与飞镖相同，且能够造成高于匕首的伤害，且能够浸毒，因此是相当实用的远程武器，适合用于对付各种不宜近距离攻击的怪物（如夺心魔）。手里剑的命中修正也使得玩家即使在技能等级为不熟练的情况下也能够打中怪物。
如果不进行批量变形，想要获得大量的手里剑是比较难的，你可以通过许愿来直接获得一堆手里剑，或是获取变形用的道具（比如变形魔杖）来进行批量变形以取得手里剑。如果你是武士，你也可以选择击杀任务里的忍者来大量获取手里剑。
技能等级
除武士外，还有三个职业可以将手里剑锻炼到熟练等级：
医生也可以将匕首和投石器技能锻炼到熟练，或是将飞镖技能锻炼到老练——这些武器都比手里剑常见得多，但伤害一般更低，而且更重，其中，飞镖是唯一可以多重射击和浸毒的武器。游侠使用弓箭有多重射击加成，盗贼使用匕首也有多重射击加成，因此对手里剑需求都不高。
僧侣的情况比较特殊。他们只能将3种远程武器的技能提升到基础等级：手里剑、长矛和十字弓。由于矛很重，而十字弓需要持握来使用，因此如果你找到手里剑，给它们附魔和祝福是值得的，毕竟僧侣也很少能用到武器附魔卷轴。即使技能等级为不熟练，僧侣也能在投掷手里剑时获得+1多重射击加成以弥补其技能等级限制。若你不介意批量变形无用的武器，你可以用此方法获取手里剑。
历史
手里剑最初于NetHack 1.3d加入游戏。到NetHack 3.0.10为止，武士在开始游戏时会获得至多9枚手里剑[5]。忍者职业（现已弃用）的角色在游戏开始时会获得25枚手里剑[6]。
起源

dNetHack
In dNetHack, garo may be generated with a stack of shuriken, and the unique garo master always generates carrying shuriken. Maids may also generate with a stack of shuriken for non-Samurai players, and Master Kaen will generate with his own stack of up to 48 golden shuriken. The Fuma-itto no Ken is a chaotic artifact broadsword that can be invoked to create shuriken.
Shuriken are added to the expanded list of Japanese item names, and will appear as "hira-shuriken" to Samurai, while darts are called "bo-shuriken".
NetHack Fourk
In NetHack Fourk, Monks can reach expert in shuriken.
SpliceHack
In SpliceHack, shuriken appear as razor cards for Cartomancers.
EvilHack
In EvilHack, Wizards no longer have the shuriken skill.
Stacks of shuriken can be given to a player as a "minor" gift from their god via sacrifice, and gifted shuriken will be erodeproofed and often enchanted - Monks that maintain weaponless conduct will always receive shuriken when given a gift this way as opposed to the standard armor and weapons, with the exception of artifacts.
Shuriken can be created at a forge by combining 2 darts and a dagger; both components are incredibly commonplace in the dungeon, providing any role with easy access to shuriken and the means to create stockpiles that use specific materials and/or properties.
SlashTHEM
In SlashTHEM, shuriken are also known by different names to Samurai and Ninja, similar to dNetHack; "standard" shuriken appear as "hira-shuriken", while darts are called "bo-shuriken".
SlashTHEM also adds the Fuma-itto no Ken from dNetHack, which retains its invoke ability and acts as the quest artifact for the revived Ninja role.
