A duergar, h, is a monster that appears in SLASH'EM, SlashTHEM and Hack'EM. The duergar is a type of dwarven humanoid that is roughly analogous to a dwarf lord—though he is not a lord to dwarfkind himself, he possesses all of the other traits that a dwarf lord does.
A duergar has two weapon attacks and hits as a +1 weapon.
Generation
Duergars are flagged to only randomly generate in Gehennom, though the branch prevents lawful monsters of any kind from generating randomly[1]—in practice, they are only seen within special rooms and special levels at initial creation, and may also appear when monster class-based generation creates a duergar as a random humanoid-class monster, e.g. in the Gnomish Mines (not unlike minesflayers). Normally created duergars may be peaceful towards heroes that are of lawful alignment, or else are either dwarven or gnomish.
Like other live dwarves, a duergar can be generated with each of the following items:[2]
- A 6⁄7 chance of a pair of iron shoes and an independent 6⁄7 chance of a dwarvish cloak.
- A 1⁄4 chance of a dwarvish short sword and dwarvish iron helm, combined with an equal probability of either of the following:
- A dwarvish mattock, or
- A dwarvish roundshield paired with an axe.
- Duergars that receive a dwarvish short sword and dwarvish iron helm also have a further 1⁄3 chance of receiving a dwarvish mithril-coat.
- Duergars that are not given a dwarvish short sword and dwarvish iron helm will instead receive either a pick-axe (1⁄3 chance) or a dagger (2⁄3 chance).
Strategy
Live duergar are a very rare sight outside of polymorph or other deliberate measures such as wishing, reverse genocide or stone to flesh, and are not especially dangerous for a mass majority of heroes when they do appear: though they hit as +1 and have two weapon attacks, they lack the multishot ability of dwarf lords and their low speed of 6 makes kiting them trivial.
