Sara, the Last Oracle

Sara, the Last Oracle, @, is the Anachrononaut quest leader in dNetHack, notdNetHack, and notnotdNetHack. Sara is a stationary human monster that is notably similar in behavior to the Oracle encountered in the main dungeon: she can see invisible, possesses monster detection and omni-sense, can be seen via infravision, and allows a hero to come close unless she is attacked—Sara is also capable of picking up magical items and other objects, but will not do so normally due to being stationary. Though she is human, seeing Sara, the Last Oracle will raise a hero's insight (although all Anachrononauts start the game with the veil lifted). Sara, the Last Oracle cannot be made tame.

Sara, the Last Oracle is fairly unique among quest leaders in dNetHack and its derivatives: in order for an Anachrononaut hero to gain access to the Anachrononaut quest and attain a full-scoring ascension, they must reach Sara and qualify for the quest while she is still alive. Androids (clockwork Anachrononauts) have a separate quest where Sara, the Last Oracle is instead transformed into the clairvoyant changed, and an Android hero is able to access the other floors of their quest branch from the beginning of the game.

Sara, the Last Oracle has a passive attack that fires magic missiles at anyone attacking her in melee, dealing damage based on that attacker's experience level or monster level. Sara, the Last Oracle also possesses magic resistance due to this attack.

Generation

Sara, the Last Oracle is always generated peaceful. She is not a valid polymorph form or genocide target, and figurines or statues of her cannot be generated or wished for.

Sara, the Last Oracle is placed in the central room of the base at the western end of the Anachrononaut quest's home level during level creation, and she will always be found behind a set of iron bars directly left of the room's center.

Sara, the Last Oracle is always generated with a cursed blindfold and a cursed +5 straitjacket.

Strategy

Preserving the life of Sara, the Last Oracle is absolutely vital for any non-Android Anachrononaut looking to save their future: while the Anachrononaut quest notably lacks hostile monsters at initial level creation, they will eventually begin generating and moving to attack Sara, the Last Oracle and the other quest friendlies and allies within the base, since hostile monsters grudge quest monsters in dNetHack and its derivatives—if she is killed before you gain quest access, you will be unable to obtain the Annulus and properly complete your role's overarching objective.

Fortunately, an attentive and careful Anachrononaut can usually prevent her from dying before she can open the Quest for them without too much trouble for the hero, and they will no longer have to worry about her death occurring once they have obtained quest access. dNetHack and its variants also allow a hero to chat to other monsters if there are iron bars directly between them, so there is no need to try and destroy the iron bars in the home base.

No shelter has Apollo, nor sacred laurel leaves
The fountains are now silent; the voice is stilled.
It is finished.
