Being breathless allows one to travel underwater; it makes one amphibious.[1]. Furthermore, breathless players cannot choke on food, but will instead "vomit voluminously" and lose 1000 nutrition.[2] Breathlessness protects from sleeping gas traps[3][4][5] and stinking clouds.[6][7]

Breathlessness is only granted by eating or wearing an amulet of magical breathing, but possessed naturally by many monsters.
