It is made of wood, and appears as a black runed short sword when unidentified; in SpliceHack, its glyph is also colored black rather than the default brown for wood.

Generation

Drow characters start the game with knowledge of the dark elven short sword. Drow Rogues start the game with a dark elven short sword.

General stores, used armor dealerships and antique weapon outlets can sell dark elven short swords.
