Dragonbane is an artifact weapon that does double damage against dragons and grants reflection when wielded.
Strategy
Like most artifacts that target a specific class of monster, the damage bonus from Dragonbane doesn't affect most monsters, making it one of the less useful artifacts. However, dragons can be a fairly valuable and dangerous target, so it might be useful if you want to make dragon scale mail earlier than normal, or fight Ixoth or the Chromatic Dragon. Additionally, getting Dragonbane from sacrificing will unrestrict broadsword skill, which can allow you to wield Stormbringer effectively if you found it in a bones pile. The reflection is useful if you have no other source, or if your other sources are inconvenient. For example, you might only have a shield of reflection and you want to cast spells, or find that two-weaponing Dragonbane with a good offhand weapon offers better damage than a single weapon and shield.
History
Prior to NetHack 3.6.1, Dragonbane did not grant reflection.

In SporkHack and UnNetHack Dragonbane is instead a dwarvish spear that confers fire, cold, acid, sleep, disintegration and shock resistance while wielded, and has a 50% chance of instantly slaying dragons (reduced to 20% in UnNetHack[1]). It also gets +d5 to hit and +d4 damage against all enemies. (If you are polymorphed into a dragon, a monster wielding Dragonbane can instantly kill you!)
