The Grue, U, is a unique monster that appears in dNetHack and notdNetHack. It is an unknown abomination that is amorphous, amphibious, carnivorous, strong, thick-skinned, and unbreathing; it possesses regeneration, the ability to see invisible, and the ability to follow you to other levels if it is adjacent. The Grue has a tendency to wander while moving, and may turn traitor while tame.
The Grue has a poisonous bite that can lower strength, a second bite attack, a shadowy magic blade attack, a digestion attack, and a passive shadowy attack. It possesses disintegration resistance, poison resistance and sickness resistance.
The Grue is listed as one of many hallucinatory monsters in NetHack.

The 'challenge' level generated before the Castle may either be the Grue's Cavern with a 1⁄3 chance or Medusa's Island with a 2⁄3 chance. If the Grue's Cavern is generated, the sleeping Grue will be placed on or near the down stair.
