While the spear-tip is not as effective against sturdier armor, the hilt was also usually hooked backwards, allowing the wielder to trap opponent's weapons and pull mounted fighters from their saddles.

A ranseur is a type of weapon that appears in NetHack. It is a two-handed polearm that is made of iron, and appears as a hilted polearm when unidentified.

Generation

In addition to random generation, general shops and antique weapons outlets can sell ranseurs.

Watchmen and soldiers may be generated with a ranseur.[1] Trolls have an effective 18 chance of being generated with a ranseur.[2]

Strategy

The ranseur is tied for the lightest of the polearms with the spetum at 50 aum - it has high average damage against small monsters and is slightly better than the spetum in that regard, but its average damage against large monsters is rather low among polearms.

History

The ranseur is introduced with all other polearms in NetHack 1.3d.

Origin

Ranseurs.png

A ranseur, also known as a roncone, was a pole weapon similar to the partisan used in Europe up to the 15th century, and saw use as a ceremonial court weapon through the 17th century. Ranseurs are generally 6 ft (1.8 m) in length or longer. Often thought to be derived from the earlier spetum, the head of a ranseur consists of a spear-tip affixed with a cross hilt at its base (hence its unidentified appearance in NetHack) - this hilt was often crescent-shaped, giving it a trident-like appearance, but lacked a cutting edge unlike the double-edged partisan. While the spear-tip is not as effective against sturdier armor, the hilt was also usually hooked backwards, allowing the wielder to trap opponent's weapons and pull mounted fighters from their saddles.

Variants

dNetHack

In dNetHack and notdNetHack, Cold Soul is an artifact ranseur that is lawful, intelligent and large, and is wielded by Mephistopheles. Each time it strikes a target, it has a 14 chance of causing explosions of fire, cold and shock centered on them.

NetHack Fourk

NetHack Fourk removes the ranseur and many other polearms.

xNetHack

xNetHack removes the ranseur and many other polearms.

EvilHack

In EvilHack, a ranseur can be created at a forge by combining a stiletto and a spear; a ranseur can be combined with an axe at a forge to create a halberd. This also applies to Hack'EM.

SlashTHEM

In SlashTHEM, troll characters that are not Convicts have a 14 chance of generating with a ranseur as their starting polearm.
