A crow quill is a type of weapon that appears in dNetHack, notnotdNetHack, and notnotdNetHack. It is a medium-sized weapon that is one-handed for a medium-sized wielder, and uses the saber skill. It has a base material of metal, and appears as a feather-etched rapier when unidentified.

A mercurial crow quill can be named The Sky Reflected and merged into The Amalgamated Skies while retaining its special study effects.

Generation

Crow quills are not randomly generated, although they may be wished for or found in bones.

The artifacts Fire Brand and Frost Brand can only be wished for or gifted in crow quill form for a half-dragon Noble, and only half-dragon Nobles can reshape the Brands into crow quills by dipping the chosen artifact into a forge or fountain respectively—this reshaping requires the hero to either have a crow quill in their inventory or be at least Skilled in sabers.

Corvian knights have a 18 chance of being generated with a crow quill.

Carcosan courtiers generated in the future (i.e. the Anachrononaut quest and Android quest) have a 34 chance of being generated with a crow quill.

Description

Any hit with a crow quill inflicts 4 points of study on the target. A hero that wields a crow quill while at Skilled or better in sabers gains the "focus fire", "stop thrust", "lunge", and "bleed" expert traits.

A crow quill wielded as the main weapon gains a full damage bonus of (DEX - 10)2 (rounded down) from the hero's dexterity, rounding up to +8 at 25 dexterity, but only gains a halved bonus from strength up to +4 at 25 strength. A wielded crow quill also increases the hero's AC by the lower value between their saber skill (with 1 point per level) and (DEX - 13)4, up to a maximum of 3 AC. Both of these traits are shared with the rapier, the rakuyo, the rakuyo-saber, and the soldier's rapier.

Origin

The crow quill is a thrusting sword that appears in the Ashes of Ariandel DLC for the 2016 game Dark Souls III. Its description states: "Thrusting sword wielded by Corvian Knights, and a special paired weapon. When twin-handed, brandish four thin-edge blades in the left hand. In their infatuation with Sister Friede, the Corvian Knights swore to protect the painting from fire, and to this end, took to the execution of their own brethren."
