A rapier is a type of weapon that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack, and notnotdNetHack. The rapier is a medium-sized melee weapon that is one-handed for a medium-sized wielder, and uses the saber skill. It has a base material of metal.

The rapier is the base item for four artifacts:

Additionally, The Rod of Lordly Might is an artifact that can take the form of a rapier when invoked.

Generation

Vampire Binders start each game with a non-cursed and rusty +0 rapier. Nobles that do not have race-specific starting inventories start each game with a +2 rapier. Chaotic yuki-onna Kensei start each game with a blessed +1 frosted metal rapier.

Rapiers make up 1200 (0.5%) of all weapons that are randomly generated on the floor, in general shops or as death drops. Used armor dealerships and antique weapon outlets can also stock rapiers, and the sand-walker's shops run by selkies in Elshava can stock silver rapiers.

Human smiths, Dracae Eladrin and Oona can forge rapiers for a hero that pays to request their services and gives them enough of their required material.

In the Mordor variant of the Chaos Quest, one of the chests in the room directly west of the ogre emperor's throne contains a blessed +3 mithril rapier, and the same room will also have two rapiers placed randomly within it during level creation.

Rapiers can be generated in the magic item vaults within the Avatar of Lolth's lair during level creation if the lair appears as the second Abyss level.

Several monsters can be generated with rapiers:

  • Argentum golems have a 112 chance of generating with a silver rapier as their weapon.
  • Grove guardians have a 16 chance of generating with a rapier as their weapon.
  • Glass golems have a 112 chance of generating with a glass rapier as their weapon.
  • Yochlol are always generated with a cursed and erosion-proofed +2 obsidian rapier.
  • Imps that are generated in Gehennom or slated for good equipment have a 12 chance of generating with an equipment set that includes a rapier.
  • Corvian knights have a 18 chance of being given a weapon set that includes a frosted metal rapier as the primary weapon paired with a set of crow talons.
  • Terracotta soldiers generated in the Kensei quest have a 13 chance of being generated with a rapier.
  • Coure Eladrin have a 14 chance of being given a rapier.
  • Noviere Eladrin have a roughly 12 chance of being given a rapier.
  • Parasitized gynoids have a 19 chance of being given a weapon set that includes an excoriating rapier as the secondary weapon.
  • Carcosan courtiers that are not generated in the future (i.e. the Anachrononaut quest and Android quest) have a 320 chance of being given a rapier.
  • Deminymphs can be generated with rapiers under certain circumstances:
    • Deminymphs that are given normal bard kits will be given a rapier that has a 120 chance of being made into an artifact, a 1100 chance of being mercurial in material, and an enchantment ranging from +0 to +3.
    • Deminymphs that are given normal noblewoman kits will be given a rapier that has a 120 chance of being made into an artifact, a 1100 chance of being mercurial in material, and an enchantment ranging from +2 to +4.
    • Deminymphs that are given "yellow sign" noblewoman kits will be given a golden rapier that has a 120 chance of being made into an artifact, a 1100 chance of being mercurial in material, and an enchantment ranging from +2 to +4.
  • Vampire lords generated in the future are given cursed +7 unholy rapiers that have a 14 chance of also being faded. Vampire lords generated outside of the future have an effective 38 chance of being given a rapier as part of their equipment.
  • Carmilla is always generated with a rapier.
  • Pardoners are always generated with a blessed +3 glittering metal rapier.
  • Erinyes that are generated in Gehennom or slated for "good" equipment have an effective 35 chance of generating with an equipment set that includes a rapier, and will always be given this equipment set when generated outside of Gehennom and the Mordor Ruins quest.
  • A marilith that is generated in Gehennom or slated for "good" equipment has a 13 chance of being given a rapier as the weapon in her third arm.
  • The blue-eyed fox has a 116 chance of generating with a filth-encrusted and dire-poisoned rapier.
  • Player monster noblemen and noblewomen that are not slated for "good" equipment are given a rapier.

Description

A rapier inflicts piercing damage, and deals 1d6 damage to small monsters and 1d4 to large ones. A rapier can be poisoned by dipping or coated it in an appropriate potion or other substance. A rapier wielded as the main weapon gains a full damage bonus of (DEX - 11)2 from the hero's dexterity, but only a halved bonus from strength, and increases the hero's AC by the lower value between their saber skill (with 1 point per level) and (DEX - 13)4: this is a trait shared with the rakuyo, the rakuyo-saber, the soldier's rapier, and the crow quill.

A rapier can be used to name The Singing Sword. Rapiers are considered a valid weapon type for use by chaotic yuki-onna Kensei. A hero that wields a rapier while they are at Skilled or better in sabers gains the "focus fire", "stop thrust" and "lunge" expert traits.

In terms of monster weapon preference, monsters will favor the rapier over the axe and will prefer a saw cleaver or better to the rapier.

Origin

A rapier (/ˈreɪpiər/) is a type of sword with a slender and sharply-pointed double-edged blade; some historical rapier samples feature a broadsword-like blade mounted on a typical rapier hilt. The term dates back to the mid-16th century, and the sword was popular throughout 16th-and-17th century Western Europe, both for civilian use and as a military side arm. Rapiers are also popularly known as dueling weapons.
