The Grue:

The Grue, U, is a unique monster that appears in dNetHack and notdNetHack. It is an unknown abomination that is amorphous, amphibious, carnivorous, strong, thick-skinned, and unbreathing; it possesses regeneration, the ability to see invisible, and the ability to follow you to other levels if it is adjacent. The Grue has a tendency to wander while moving, and may turn traitor while tame.
The Grue has a poisonous bite that can lower strength, a second bite attack, a shadowy magic blade attack, a digestion attack, and a passive shadowy attack. It also possesses disintegration resistance, poison resistance and sickness resistance. The Grue has a somewhat-unique interaction with lit and unlit squares:
- While in the dark, the Grue is invisible and has twice the movement speed, attacks any monster it encounters, and will not move into lit squares.
- While in a lit square, the Grue becomes scared, will only use its bite attacks, and can move through lit squares (in order to prevent it from being too easily trapped in the light).
The Grue is listed as one of many hallucinatory monsters in NetHack.
Generation
The Grue is always generated as hostile, and is not a valid form for normal polymorph.
The 'challenge' level generated before the Castle may either be the Grue's Cavern with a 1⁄3 chance or Medusa's Island with a 2⁄3 chance. If the Grue's Cavern is generated, the sleeping Grue will be placed on or near the down stair.
