A rakuyo is a type of weapon and an object property that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. The rakuyo is a unique, multi-formed insight weapon that can be split into a pair of component weapons, the rakuyo-saber and the rakuyo-dagger, and "rakuyo" is also an object property that is naturally found with every rakuyo weapon.

The rakuyo is a medium-sized melee weapon, making it one-handed for a medium-sized hero, and uses the saber skill. It is made of metal and appears as a double-bladed saber when unidentified.

The rakuyo-saber is a medium-sized melee weapon, making it one-handed for a medium-sized hero, and uses the saber skill as the 'combined' rakuyo does. It is made of metal and appears as a latch-pommeled saber when unidentified.

The rakuyo-dagger is a small melee weapon, making it one-handed for a medium-sized hero, and uses the dagger skill. It is made of metal and appears as a latch-pommeled dagger when unidentified.

The rakuyo is the base item for the artifact known as the Blade Singer's Saber: the Blade Dancer's Dagger is the artifact rakuyo-dagger that accompanies the Blade Singer's Saber, and only appears when unlatched from the latter rakuyo-saber.

Generation

Vampire Undead Hunters have a 15 chance of starting the game with a rakuyo, and those that do will also know the appearance of the rakuyo-saber and rakuyo-dagger.

Rakuyos and their component weapons are not randomly generated, though they can be found in bones or wished for—none of them can be generated or wished for as the base item of either Fire Brand or Frost Brand, nor can they be reshaped into such weapons.

Player monster madmen and noblewomen that are slated for "good" equipment are generated with a rakuyo.

Player monster madwomen that are slated for "good" equipment have a 14 chance of being given a rakuyo-saber and rakuyo-dagger as their primary and secondary weapons.

Player monster undead hunters have a 115 chance each of generating with either a latched rakuyo or a rakuyo-saber and rakuyo-dagger as their weapon(s).

As an object property

All rakuyo, rakuyo-sabers and rakuyo-daggers have the rakuyo property. The property cannot be included when wishing for a weapon.

Yuki-onna Madpeople that started the game as female will have a +2 silver rakuyo katana and a +2 mithril rakuyo wakizashi generated among their belongings in the quest box on the goal level of the Madperson quest during level creation.

Description

A rakuyo deals piercing and slashing damage, inflicting 1d8 base damage against all monsters, and both the weapon and its components can be poisoned by dipping them in an appropriate potion. They have a +2 to-hit bonus and can be enchanted to +10. Rakuyos do not gain any damage bonus from the wielder's strength, but do gain a damage bonus equal to twice the wielder's dexterity.

A rakuyo is composed of the rakuyo-saber and rakuyo-dagger latched together at their pommels and pointing in opposite directions, and both 'ends' of the weapon are used in combat: while wielded and not performing two weapon combat, a rakuyo's enchantment is effectively doubled, and it gains +1d4 damage against small monsters and +1d3 against large monsters, but attacking with one uses up an extra 3 movement points. A hero applying a wielded and non-cursed rakuyo will unlatch the weapon into its component parts and begin twoweaponing them, with the saber in the primary hand and the dagger in the off-hand.

A rakuyo-saber is naturally similar to a regular rakuyo with the weight of the unlatched dagger subtracted, and it lacks the aforementioned enchantment and damage bonuses of the standard rakuyo as well as the movement penalties. The rakuyo-dagger itself behaves like other dagger weapons do, e.g. they use the same damage dice, and can be thrown without a to-hit penalty applied for its weapon type. Both weapons deal piercing and slashing damage, retain the base rakuyo's +2 to-hit bonus, and also lack a strength bonus while gaining a doubled dexterity bonus.

A hero applying a rakuyo-saber and rakuyo-dagger that they are performing two weapon combat with will re-latch them together, but only if the component weapons are not cursed and are identical to each other (with the obvious exception of their item type)—if either of the blades have different enchantments, material, beatitude, object properties, or potion coating (such as a potion of sickness) in their separated forms, they cannot be recombined and will resist combination until these traits are made identical.

In terms of monster weapon preference, monsters will favor the rakuyo over the elven broadsword, and will prefer a dwarvish mattock or better to the rakuyo. Monster weapon preference differs for each of the rakuyo's components: for a rakuyo-saber, monsters will favor it over the pincer staff, and will prefer a blade of mercy or better to the rakuyo-saber; for a rakuyo-dagger, monsters will favor it over a normal dagger, and will prefer an athame or better to the rakuyo-dagger.

An Undead Hunter that uses a twin columnar crystal or a columnar chunk to upgrade a weapon via manual smithing has a 12 chance of learning the appearances of the rakuyo, rakuyo-saber and rakuyo-dagger, which will also grant them the ability to train to Expert in sabers and daggers.

Property details

"Rakuyo" is also the name of the object property that all rakuyos and their components possess, and it can occur on other weapons as well. Rakuyo weapons are insight weapons and gain additional to-hit and damage dice when used by Madpeople or any role with Ose bound—these bonuses scale with the hero's insight and experience level. Rakuyo weapons also gain additional properties for any hero using them, depending on their insight:

  • At 20 insight, they become "blood-drenched", which creates slices of blood that hit any hostile monsters on the square behind the initial target. These blood slices deal 1d(12+enchantment*2) rotten blood damage, and targets with blood also take a flat damage bonus equal to their own level.
  • At 40 insight, they become "burning" (which appears alongside the above adjective), and attacking a monster in melee causes 3x3 explosions of fire centered on the square behind the initial target—this explosion deals 6d6 fire damage, and will hit the original target monster as well (but not the hero).
  • If the hero is performing two weapon combat with another rakuyo-class item in their offhand, then the blood slices roll 2 dice and there are two explosions.

Origin

The rakuyo originates from Bloodborne, a video game developed by FromSoftware—the extra blood and fire effects of weapons with the rakuyo property at high insight are based on attacks performed by Lady Maria of the Astral Clocktower, a boss that wields a rakuyo during her fight.
