A rakuyo is a type of weapon that appears in dNetHack and notdNetHack. It is a one-handed weapon composed of a saber and a dagger, latched together at their pommels and pointing in opposite directions. It is made of metal, uses the saber skill and appears as a double-bladed saber when unidentified.
The Blade Singer's Saber is an artifact rakuyo.
Generation
Rakuyos and their component weapons are not randomly generated, though they can be found in bones or wished for.
Description
Rakuyos deal piercing and slashing damage, and can be poisoned. They do not gain any damage bonus from the wielder's strength, but do gain a damage bonus equal to twice the wielder's dexterity. While wielded and not twoweaponing, a rakuyo's enchantment is effectively doubled and it gains +1d3 damage against small monsters and +1d4 against large monsters, but attacking with one uses up an extra 3 movement points.
Applying a wielded rakuyo will unlatch the weapon into its component parts and begin twoweaponing:
Rakuyo-saber
The rakuyo-saber is the weapon produced in your main hand when unlatching a rakuyo. It uses the saber skill, and appears as a latch-pommeled saber when unidentified. A rakuyo-saber is nearly identical to a regular rakuyo, minus the weight of the unlatched dagger.
The Blade Singer's Saber retains its identity while unlatched.
Rakuyo-dagger
The rakuyo-dagger is the weapon produced in your off-hand when unlatching a rakuyo, and uses the dagger skill, allowing it to be thrown with no to-hit penalty. It appears as a latch-pommeled dagger when unidentified. Like the main saber, rakuyo-daggers deal piercing and slashing damage and can be poisoned, and also lack a strength bonus while gaining a doubled dexterity bonus.
The Blade Dancer's Dagger is the artifact that accompanies the Blade Singer's Saber, and only appears when unlatched from the latter.
Rakuyo property
"Rakuyo" is also the name of an object property that all rakuyos and their components possess; yuki-onna Madwomen can also find a katana and wakizashi with this property in the Madman quest.
Rakuyo weapons are insight weapons and gain additional to-hit and damage dice when used by Madmen or any role with Ose bound: these bonuses scale with the character's insight and experience level. Rakuyo weapons also gain additional properties for any character using them, depending on insight:
- At 20 insight, they become "blood-drenched", which causes damage to hostile monsters behind a monster that you attack in melee.
- At 40 insight, they become "burning", and attacking a monster in melee causes 3x3 explosions of fire centered on the square behind the target.

Origin
The rakuyo originates from Bloodborne, a video game developed by FromSoftware - the extra blood and fire effects of weapons with the rakuyo property at high insight are based on attacks performed by Lady Maria of the Astral Clocktower, a boss that wields a rakuyo during her fight.
