A scroll of resistance is a type of magical scroll that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack, and notnotdNetHack.
Generation
Except for the following quests, all other quests contain exactly 3 scrolls of resistance located inside a container somewhere in the home level.
- The Anachrononaut quest has no scrolls of resistance.
- The Android quest has no scrolls of resistance.
- The Binder quest has no scrolls of resistance.
- The Caveman quest has no scrolls of resistance.
- The Convict quest home level only has 1 scroll of resistance.
- The drow Healer quest home level has 3 scrolls of resistance, and 3 more are found on the floor district of Menzoberranzan level, generated with the tactile object property.
- The Female Half-dragon Noble quest locate level only has 2 scrolls of resistance.
- The Kensei quest has no scrolls of resistance.
- The Monk quest has no scrolls of resistance.
- The dwarf Noble quest locate level has 6 scrolls of resistance.
Monks may be given a scroll of resistance as the random scroll in their starting inventory. Wizards may be given a scroll of resistance as any of the three random scrolls in their starting inventory.
Scrolls of resistance make up 17⁄500 (3.4%) of all randomly-generated scrolls. General stores, second-hand bookstores and rare books shops can sell scrolls of resistance.
Writing a scroll of resistance with a magic marker takes up 9 to 17 charges.
Description
Reading a scroll of resistance has different effects based on its beatitude: a blessed scroll grants 5000 turns of temporary intrinsics, cumulative with any previously obtained amount of turns of temporary intrinsics. An uncursed scroll grants 250 turns when read, while a cursed scroll only grants 5 turns instead. Reading the scroll will auto-identify it. The scroll itself also cannot be destroyed by fire and water damage of any kind. The following types of intrinsics are granted by reading a scroll of resistance:
Reading a scroll of resistance while confused instead causes four explosions to erupt around the hero, each of a different element: fiery, cold, shock and acid in order. Each explosion deals roughly 2 ⋅ rn1(XL,XL)3 elemental damage, reduced by XL-13 if the scroll was blessed, or increased by the same amount if it was cursed.
Monsters will not pick up or use this scroll.
Strategy
Blessed scrolls of resistance are excellent sources of the basic resistances in the early game when permanent intrinsics are still a ways off, and in the late game for characters that have yet to be crowned. While the scroll of resistance can be used offensively, its low damage output relative to its rarity makes the effort rather wasteful. Scrolls of resistance are uncommon among scrolls and somewhat expensive to write with a magic marker, making them a valuable resource for fighting spellcasters with high-damage elemental spells and other monsters with dangerous elemental attacks. For Binders, who are unable to become crowned, a scroll of resistance is a useful stopgap to supplement the hero's suite of resistances until they can either find an artifact that can permanently grant them the missing resistance, or else until they can rebind another spirit. Scrolls of resistance are also especially useful for characters engaging Gehennom early on.
Identification
The scroll of resistance only shares its base price of 250 zm with the scroll of antimagic, making them trivial to identify by price identifying or use-identifying either one.
