A trephination kit is a type of tool that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. It is a medium-sized chargeable tool that has a base material of metal.
Generation
Trephination kits make up 1⁄200 (0.5%) of all tools randomly generated on the ground, in general shops or as death drops. Randomly-generated trephination kits are generated with up to 24 charges, and their beatitude will be uncursed 4⁄5 of the time, cursed 1⁄10 of the time, and blessed 1⁄10 of the time.
Trephination kits can be found in some quest levels:
- A blessed obsidian trephination kit is generated on the temple altar of the Caveman quest home level during level creation.
- A trephination kit is placed in the chest within the warden's office on the Convict quest locate level during level creation. A rusty iron trephination kit is also placed in a specific location within the supply room full of iron chains and heavy iron balls on the locate level during level creation.
- A trephination kit is placed randomly on the Healer quest goal level during level creation.
- One trephination kit is present on the altar to the college in the Undead Hunter quest, in the top left room.
The Mad Grazi is always generated with a glass trephination kit.
Player monster healers generated on the Madperson quest are created with golden trephination kits.
Description
Applying a trephination kit with at least 10 insight allows for a character to perform three operations at a cost of one charge each:
- Trepanning "your brain". For a hero that is not currently polymorphed or that has at least 20 insight, trepanning your brain will allow you to remove one currently slotted thought. The removed thought is then transformed into a bone tile (which is copper for clockwork heroes and plastic for Androids) scrimshawed with a symbol representing that thought, and can be read to replace it. The operation will halve current HP, reduce sanity by 10, and reduce wisdom, intelligence and constitution by 1 each. This attribute damage is not counted as abuse and can be fixed through restore ability.
- Trepanning "your crystal skulls". Requires a crystal skull held in open inventory, allowing it to be accessed as a container. Any items put into the skull will appear in the inventory of the crystal skull's summoned monster as temporarily summoned items.
- "Putting parasites in your brain". This operation is closely tied to the parasitology research path and the weed thought that neutral Undead Hunters start the game with. A hero of any role who obtains this glyph may use this option to obtain parasitology upgrades, so long as they meet three prerequisites:
- The hero must have the lumen thought slotted and have at least 27 insight, at which point the thought becomes active.
- The hero must be carrying a parasite in open inventory.
- The hero must have performed sufficient research into parasitology to qualify for a new upgrade.
A trephination kit can hold up to 50 charges. Blessed charging adds 6–15 if it had less than 11 charges previously, or 6–10 if it had more. Uncursed charging always adds 1–5 charges. Trephination kits cannot be put into crystal skulls.
