An oilskin cloak is a type of cloak that appears in NetHack. It is made of cloth, and appears as a slippery cloak when unidentified.

Generation

Oilskin cloaks make up 0.8% of randomly generated cloaks.

Description

When worn, an oilskin cloak grants 1 base AC and MC2, and functions as a permanently greased cloak. A non-cursed oilskin cloak protects its wearer from all grabbing attacks, including the drowning attacks commonly associated with sea monsters[1][2] - metal body armor worn underneath it is also protected from water damage.[3][4] A cursed oilskin cloak will only stop grabbing and protect armor 23 of the time.

Buying or selling an oilskin cloak in a shop will auto-identify the cloak.

Strategy

The oilskin cloak provides excellent protection against drowning threats, and may even be a suitable ascension kit candidate or at least a safe secondary cloak if critical properties such as magic resistance and/or reflection are reliably covered by other slots (e.g., gray dragon scale mail paired with an amulet or shield of reflection). For those using other cloaks, there are many other methods of mitigating or nullifying the threat of drowning and the like, and a greased cloak is typically sufficient.

History

The oilskin cloak first appears in NetHack 3.1.0. From this version to NetHack 3.1.3, it has a randomized appearance when unidentified like other cloaks; NetHack 3.2.0 gives the cloak its current unidentified appearance.

In NetHack 3.4.3 and previous versions, including some variants based on these versions, the oilskin cloak grants MC3.

Messages

The slippery cloak fits very tightly.

Variants

SLASH'EM

In SLASH'EM, the oilskin cloak grants MC3 while worn.

The chest at the end of the southwest secret passage behind the throne room of Grund's Stronghold has a 13 chance of containing an oilskin cloak.

Upgrading a cloak of protection, cloak of invisibility, cloak of magic resistance, cloak of displacement, dwarvish cloak or orcish cloak has a 12 chance to produce an oilskin cloak; upgrading an oilskin cloak can produce a cloak of protection, cloak of invisibility, cloak of magic resistance, or cloak of displacement with an equal probability of each.

dNethack

In dNethack, an oilskin cloak grants 1 AC, 0 DR and MC3 when worn, and protects the entire inventory from water damage as opposed to just worn body armor, with the same rates depending on beatitude.

The Cloak of the Unheld One is an artifact oilskin cloak that is neutral and intelligent. While carried, it grants sleep resistance, and while worn it grants magic resistance and free action in addition to its usual properties; it can be safely enchanted to +7. Invoking The Cloak of the Unheld One while wearing it causes you to teleport: if you are not wearing it at the time, it will teleport itself instead. If invoked on a no-teleport level, it will attempt to warp you to the level above, and will warp you one level below otherwise.

FIQHack

In FIQHack, oilskin cloaks protect the entire inventory from water damage.

SlashTHEM

In SlashTHEM, in addition to SLASH'EM details, Divers start the game with a +1 oilskin cloak, and Pirates and Corsairs start the game with the oilskin cloak's appearance identified. Player monster divers also generate with oilskin cloaks.

Hack'EM

In Hack'EM, the chest at the end of the southwest secret passage behind the throne room of Grund's Stronghold has the same 13 chance of containing an oilskin cloak. Oilskin cloaks cannot be upgraded or produced by upgrading.
