A naginata is a type of weapon that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. It is a polearm weapon that is two-handed for a medium-sized wielder. It has a base material of iron, and appears as a samurai-sword polearm when unidentified.

There are two artifact naginata: Jinja Naginata and the Green Dragon Crescent Blade.

Generation

Samurai women start the game with a +0 naginata. Barbarians, Kensei, Knights, Samurai men, and Valkyries start the game with knowledge of the naginata.

The naginata is very rare and makes up 11000 (0.1%) of all weapons randomly generated on the ground, in general shops or as death drops. Used armor dealerships and antique weapons outlets can also stock naginatas.

Some monsters can be generated with a naginata:

  • Female tengu that generate on the Samurai quest, or else with a 120 chance on other levels, are generated with a naginata.
  • Maids have a 120 chance of generating with a naginata if the hero is a Samurai.
  • Deminymphs that get a "samurai" undead hunter kit will have a roughly 12 chance of generating with an equipment set that includes a rakuyo naginata with an enchantment ranging from +0 to +3, a chance of being made of mercurial material and a chance of being made into an artifact.

Description

Naginata can be poisoned, and unlike many polearms they can be properly used in standard melee combat. While wielded, a naginata grants a bonus to the hero's AC equal to 1 plus half the weapon's enchantment.

Origin

The naginata is one of several varieties of traditionally-made Japanese blades, originally serving as a polearm used by feudal samurai, foot soldiers, warrior monks, and the onna-musha (women warriors belonging to Japanese nobility). Commonly misunderstood to be a type of sword rather than a polearm, the naginata consists of a wooden or metal oval-shaped pole that has a curved single-edged blade on the end, with a round handguard often situated between the blade and shaft; the blade is inserted into the shaft and secured by a wooden peg that passes through a hole in both. The blade's length ranges from 30 cm to 60 cm (11.8 inches to 23.6 inches), while the shaft ranges from 120 cm to 240 cm (47.2 inches to 94.5 inches).

Naginata can be used for battering, stabbing or hooking opponents, but their relatively balanced center of mass allows a user to spin and turn them as needed to attain a large radius of reach, and the curved blade provides a long cutting surface that can keep opponents at bay; despite the perceived disadvantages, the weapon's weight provides power to strikes and cuts, and both the shaft and the weight at the end can be used offensively and defensively. Most modernized naginata practice uses two different types with an oak shaft and an oak or bamboo "blade".
