A wand of acid is a type of wand that appears in NetHack: The Next Generation, SlashTHEM, SpliceHack, and Hack'EM. In Hack'EM, the item is renamed to the wand of corrosion.

Generation

An Acid Mage will always receive a wand of acid, and Wizards may randomly receive one in their starting inventory.

Description

Zapping a wand of acid shoots an acidic ray similar to a yellow dragon's breath attack. Like many other acid-based attacks, the acid ray can corrode iron and copper weapons and armor, and will destroy any doors it hits. Every time an acid ray hits a target, there is a 16 chance of affecting the target's weapon, and a separate 1 in 6 chance 16 chance of affecting the target's armor. If a player wielding two weapons is hit by the acid, each weapon has a 13 chance of being affected.

Zapping yourself with the wand deals 8d6 damage unless you have acid resistance. Being hit by a ray of acid from the wand or zapping yourself will cure stoning.

Applyying a wand of acid to break it causes an explosion of noxious gas which deals double the ray's damage to you and surrounding creatures.

Attempting to engrave with a wand of acid returns the message "The bugs on the <floor> seem to be covered in goo!" which can be used to identify the wand, though the wand does not self-identify. Engravings made this way are non-permanent.

In SpliceHack, engraving with this wand auto-identifies it and always burns an engraving. This makes it a nice substitute for a wand of fire.

When this wand explodes (from breaking or cursed backfire) it deals (8 * charges remaining).

Acid rays can also be used to melt iron bars, provided they are on a level that doesn't prevent them from being destroyed.

Zapping yourself is more lethal than SlashTHEM, resulting in 12d6 acid damage.

In Hack'EM it was renamed to the wand of corrosion to avoid naming conflicts with potions of acid. It was ported from SpliceHack with some minor tweaks. Acid rays (from the wand of corrosion or monster breath) can destroy webs, trees, dead trees, and grass. Fountains, toilets, sinks, and rust traps that are hit will also cause an alchemical blast and likely destroy the dungeon feature in the process.

Breaking this wand deals (4 x charges remaining x 3) damage [1] with a chance to create a magic beam trap depending on how many charges were left.[2]
