- This article is about the helm item in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. For the rope-like weapon in these variants, see bands (weapon).
- For other uses of the term, see band.
A band, also known internally as a "gold circlet", is a type of helm that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. The band is a form of randomized appearance for certain types of helm that has a base material of gold.
The band is the base item for an artifact, The Crown of the Saint King.
Generation
The displayed name of the band changes depending on the type of helm that is randomized to appear as one:
- A helmet that appears as a band will become a "circlet".
- A helm of brilliance that appears as a band will become a "crown of cognizance".
- A helm of opposite alignment that appears as a band will become a "tiara of treachery".
- A helm of telepathy that appears as a band will become a "tiara of telepathy".
- A helm of drain resistance that appears as a band will become a "diadem of drain resistance".
The "fishing village" map inclusions for the Outlands rings has a 1⁄100 chance of generating a gold band on each square.
For half-dragon Madman, a +2 silver band that has the blast object property is generated among their belongings in the quest box on the goal level of the Madperson quest during level creation.
Some monsters can be generated with bands for helms:
- Glasya is always generated with a cursed +9 band.
- Live elven monsters that are generated in the future (i.e. the Anachrononaut quest and Android quest) outside of the level creation process have an effective 19⁄200 chance of generating with a rotted veggy band that has an equal probability of being yellow, red, bright magenta, or blue in color.
- King Arthur is always generated with a blessed +3 band.
- Neferet the Green is always generated with a blessed +5 golden band—if the helm of opposite alignment is randomized to a band, then she will instead have a golden helm of brilliance.
- Throne Archons are always generated with erosion-proofed copper bands.
- Gae Eladrin have two possible equipment sets from a total of six (selected with equal probability) that can include a band:
- Carcosan courtiers generated in the future have a 1⁄4 chance of being given an equipment set that includes a veggy band which is colored either yellow (4⁄5 chance) or brown (1⁄5 chance).
- Deminymphs can generate with bands in various instances.
- Deminymphs that are given the "Yellow Sign" subset of noblewoman kits will be generated with a golden band, which has an enchantment ranging from +1 to +3 and a 1⁄40 chance of being made into an artifact.
- Deminymphs that are given the "club claw" subset of undead hunter kits will be generated with a brown-colored veggy band, which has an enchantment ranging from +1 to +6 and a 1⁄40 chance of being made into an artifact.
- Deminymphs that are given the standard noblewoman kits will be generated with a band which has an enchantment ranging from +1 to +3 and a 1⁄40 chance of being made into an artifact.
- An erinys will always be generated with a band if she is generated in Gehennom, or else if she is slated for good equipment and is generated in the ford and the forest areas of the Mordor Ruins Quest, in the areas beyond the ford outside of level creation, or anywhere else in the dungeon.
- Nymphs that are generated in the future (i.e. the Anachrononaut quest and Android quest) and are not intoners, deminymphs, neverwere, or carcosan courtiers have an effective 2⁄9 chance of generating with a rotted veggy band that has an equal probability of being yellow, red, bright magenta, or blue in color.
- Nitocris is always generated with a +9 golden band—if the helm of opposite alignment is randomized to a band, then she will instead have a golden helm of brilliance.
Description
While worn, a band variation of a helm gives halved AC and DR after adjustments for erosion and material, but also add a bonus equal to their enchantment to the hero's charisma. A helm that is randomized to appear as a band otherwise has the same effects as it does normally. Wearing or taking off a band of any type takes 1 action.
Bands are considered hats and can be worn by monsters that have horns or otherwise normally require barded helmets.
