A Bard:
| |
A bard, @, is a type of monster that appears in the Bard patch against NetHack 3.4.3, where it is a chaotic player monster corresponding to the Bard hero and will have the role's appropriate rank title for their monster level.
A bard has a single weapon attack.
Generation
Bards are not generated randomly, and are normally created as peaceful towards chaotic heroes before specific adjustments are made. They are only a valid form for doppelgangers to polymorph into, and can only be targeted for genocide if a Bard hero reads a scroll of genocide. However, the original patch does not include changes to mplayer.c and most other files to accommodate the bard player monster or provide them with any inventory—similar details such as corpse placement and statue generation are also missing.
Variants
The bard player monster is included in other NetHack variants with their inventory and other data filled out accordingly:
- Bard (dNetHack monster) in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack
- Bard (SlashTHEM monster) in SlashTHEM
- Bard (Hack'EM) in Hack'EM
Of the listed variants above, Hack'EM is the only variant that does not incorporate the Bard patch into the base game, instead including the monster as part of the Pleasant Valley map for the Town branch—Hack'EM adapts the level map from SlashTHEM, including adding the bard and other monsters that SlashTHEM normally places on that map.
