A church blade is a type of weapon seen in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. It is a two-handed blunt/piercing weapon that uses the two-handed sword skill and is usually made of iron. At skilled and expert it gains the hew, fell and lunge expert traits.
When applied, the church blade splits into two items: the hunter's longsword and the church sheath. The hunter's longsword is a type of slashing/piercing weapon that uses the long sword skill and is usually made of silver. At skilled and expert it gains the graze, focus fire and stop thrust expert skills.
The church sheath is a type of tool that nonetheless appears alongside weapons in the inventory. It is usually made of iron and appears as an engraved sheath when unidentified. Note that when sheathing, the weight of the church blade is determined by the weight of the hunter's longsword being sheathed and the sheath's own weight, not by the church blade's base weight.
The church blade counts as a self-righteous weapon when in its untransformed state. Neither of the other two items inherit this property.

Generation
Church blades make up 1⁄1000 of randomly generated weapons. Hunter's longswords do not randomly generate.
Non-vampire Undead hunters have a 1⁄6 chance of starting the game with a church blade.
All Undead hunters have a 90% chance of finding a church blade in their quest home in a chest in the top-left corner, in the room with the forge.
Strategy
Undead hunters who start the game with this weapon will find it to be a very serviceable weapon, which can be used until the end of the game if so desired. In the early game it is best to avoid the to-hit penalty incurred by the two-handed sword form and instead use the longsword, ditching the sheath whenever weight becomes an issue. Later on, a lighter version can be smithed at the forge in minetown or elsewhere in the dungeon. A mithril sheath is already a significant weight reduction (55 aum vs. 110 aum) and further reduction would require obtaining shadowsteel, which would also evaporate in light, even with high magic cancellation. Treesinger's cannot copy the weapon, so it cannot be made out of wood outside of wishing and already being generated with the material.
As a weapon, the church blade carries advantages and disadvantages similar to a two-handed sword, with the added versatility of having all three damage masks (blunt, piercing, slashing) covered. Once highly enchanted, the church blade's untransformed form will generally outperform the hunter's longsword, but does still carry the danger of being welded to your hand by magic casters. Curse resistance is a very useful intrinsic to have if this is the intended use. Consecrating the weapon or applying the holy object property will pair well with the self-righteous trait, but isn't particularly necessary.
Non-undead hunter's who find this weapon will likely benefit the most from the longsword, and has a high chance of being made of silver. Though there are other relatively easily found sources, namely Argentum golems and Nazguls, it is nonetheless useful enough to keep. It cannot be named into Claideamh or The Singing Sword.
