Crystal boots are a type of boots that appear in dNetHack, notnotdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. They are a small item that has a default material of glass, and appear as "boots" with their material displayed when unidentified.

Generation

Crystal boots are not randomly generated and cannot be duplicated by any form of smithing, but they can be wished for or found in bones.

A pair of blessed +0 crystal boots is placed within each of the 8 trapped Shiere Eladrin statues on the last level of the Law quest during level creation.

For gnomish Madpeople, "crystal" boots are found among the tiny diamond armor that is included within the tiny crystal skull stored inside the special box on their quest.

Crystal boots can be generated in the magic item vaults that appear within the Avatar of Lolth's lair during level creation if it appears as the second Abyss level.

Monster starting inventory

Some monsters can be generated with crystal boots:

  • Shiere Eladrin are always generated with a pair of crystal boots.
  • Tulani Eladrin generated outside of the Elemental Planes have a 34 chance of being generated with a blessed shatterproof pair of crystal boots. If the hero has at least 1 point of insight, there is a Insight7 chance of future Tulani Eladrin that generate being given special holy equipment: those generated on the Elemental Planes have a 14 chance of being generated with a shatterproof +3 pair of crystal boots, which have a 15 chance of a gemstone object material (with an equal probability of opal, star sapphire or diamond) and a 15 chance of being made of obsidian—they will otherwise be made of glass. Tulani Eladrin generated outside of the Elemental Planes after the hero gains insight only have a 120 chance of receiving this gear.
  • Brighid Eladrin are always generated with a blessed and shatterproof obsidian pair of 'crystal' boots.
  • Ancients of ice are always generated with a large pair of crystal boots.
  • Alrunes has a 12 chance of being generated with an equipment set that includes a pair of crystal boots.
  • The lilitu disguised as an aligned priest that is found tending to a coaligned temple in the lair of the Avatar of Lolth (if it appears as the second Abyss level in Gehennom) is always generated with crystal boots upon transforming.
  • Player monster anachrononauts and noblemen slated for "good" equipment are always generated with crystal boots.
  • Ymir is always generated with a gigantic +7 pair of crystal boots when summoned by an Illithanachronounbinder.

Description

While worn, crystal boots grant 2 base AC and 4 base DR. Like other crystal armor, it can be safely enchanted from +5 to reach +7 (similar to elven armor) and gains a full bonus to AC and DR from its enchantment, up to 9 AC and 11 DR at +7. Wearing or taking off crystal boots takes two turns.

Crystal boots are fragile and may shatter when thrown, kicked or dropped from a height (e.g. while levitating) unless they are made erosion-proof—a force bolt spell or a zapped wand of striking will destroy any crystal shields on the ground in the path of the beam.

History

Crystal boots are introduced in dNetHack version 3.8 via commit b1a47be5, which also adds the crystal sword, crystal helm and crystal shield.
