Ent (starting race)
- This article is about the playable race in notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. For other uses, see ent.
The ent, also known as the treant, is a playable race that is available to the hero in notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. A treant/ent hero will appear as H if the showrace option is set on, and is part of the giant humanoid monster class. The ent is the corresponding monster to an ent hero.
Ents can be lawful or neutral, and can be played as an Anachrononaut, Barbarian, Binder, Caveperson, Convict, Healer, Illithanachronounbinder, Priest, Ranger, Troubadour, or Wizard.
Racial benefits and restrictions
Though classified among the giant humanoids, ents are huge plant monsters, and other plants are considered to be of the same race. Ents are incredibly unique among starting races both in (not)notdNetHack and in variants of NetHack: the exact intrinsics and traits of a given ent hero depend entirely on the species of tree it is derived from, which can also potentially be influenced by their role. A player starting the game with an ent hero can select their ent's species during character creation.
Ents are generally among the physically stronger races, with some very high physical attribute caps and low mental attribute caps, and can pick up and throw boulders. They usually have a slow base speed of 10, but gain an extra 3-point bonus to AC and DR for each of their armor slots, and will always start with at least 19 strength. Their special spell is restore ability.
Attribute caps
| Character Race |
Strength | Dexterity | Constitution | Intelligence | Wisdom | Charisma |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ent | 25 | 16 | 25 | 14 | 14 | 14 |
Ents have great strength and constitution, with better HP growth than dwarves, but have much lower mental stats and energy growth than average.
Ent species
Below is a table of ent species and their primary traits:
- Ancient body: Rerolls negative AC.

- Coniferous: Cold resistant (also protects inventory)
- Deciduous: Receives amnesia forgetness and take sanity damage at half the rate
- Powerful build: Effectively one size larger for attacks (like Ymir and Cavepeople)
