A nagamaki is a type of weapon that appears in dNetHack, notnotdNetHack, and notnotdNetHack, where it effectively replaces the tsurugi. The nagamaki is a huge weapon that is two-handed for a medium-sized wielder, and uses the two-handed sword skill. It has a base material of metal, and appears as a long-handled samurai-sword when unidentified.
There are two artifact nagamaki: The Masamune, a Chaos Temple Quest artifact, and The Tsurugi of Muramasa, the Samurai quest artifact.
Generation
Neutral Yuki-onna Kensei start each game with a blessed +1 nagamaki.
Nagamaki are not randomly generated, although they may be wished for or found in bones.
Three vorpal mercurial nagamaki each have a 3⁄4 chance of being generated on the Kensei quest locate level for githyanki Kensei during level creation.
Half-dragon Madwomen have a 1⁄9 chance of finding a mercurial nagamaki in their quest box.
The artifacts Fire Brand and Frost Brand can only be generated, wished for or gifted in nagamaki form to a Samurai, and only Samurai can reshape the Brands into nagamaki by dipping the chosen artifact into a forge or fountain respectively—this reshaping requires the hero to either have a nagamaki in their inventory or be at least Skilled in two-handed swords.
The ogre emperor in the Mordor Ruins Quest is generated with a large nagamaki.
Player monster kensei are generated with a nagamaki 1⁄8 of the time.
Description
A hero wielding a nagamaki at Skilled or better in two-handed swords gains the "graze", "hew", "cleave", and "long slash" expert traits.
Lawful Yuki-onna Kensei can use nagamaki to perform kensei moves, while a Samurai wielding a nagamaki can perform shattering blows.
