A shadow ogre:
|
A shadow ogre, O, is a type of monster that appears in Hack'EM. The shadow ogre is a type of ogre that is even stronger than the ogre king, and is similarly treated as an overlord to his kind. Shadow ogres can darken their surroundings as they move. Tame shadow ogres may turn traitor.
A shadow ogre has a weapon attack and a life draining touch attack, and possesses poison resistance, death resistance and drain resistance along with a vulnerability to fire.
Generation
Shadow ogres may be generated as peaceful towards chaotic heroes.
Grund's Stronghold has a 1⁄2 chance of generating a shadow ogre within the room containing the throne at level creation.
Shadow ogres can appear among the random O that are part of the first quest monster class for Barbarians and make up 24⁄175 of the monsters randomly generated on the Barbarian quest.
A shadow ogre always generates with some gold and a weapon, which has a 1⁄12 chance of being a battle-axe and will otherwise be a club, and is eligible for offensive, defensive and miscellaneous items. As shadow ogres are overlords to their kind, any weapons they generate with will be at least +1.
Strategy
Shadow ogres can be fairly dangerous, since they move faster than an unhasted and unburdened hero and have a base AC of 0, and on top of their high weapon damage they can also devastate the hero with their life-draining touch, unless they possess drain resistance or at least MC3. Thankfully, shadow ogres lack any other defenses beyond a formidable MR score of 60, and a hero can use attack wands and enchanted projectiles to bring down an approaching shadow ogre before it can get within melee range.
