transvestite role

you might want to review the inclusion of the transvestite role. is it actually implemented in your game? it is easily the most offensive thing i've read for ages; sexist, genderist, and generally unpleasant. might get you some press, and, after all the number of people who will play it is probably not non-zero. but, well, words fail me. --194.116.198.185 12:23, 15 April 2014 (UTC)

Well, actually it is implemented... why would it be "sexist" or "genderist"? Just because they automatically become male upon starting the game or what? They're always free to use an amulet of change, and the fact that they play different depending on their gender is mainly there because in vanilla NetHack, the player character's gender didn't have any impact on the game at all. The role is in no way meant to be offensive, and people who don't like it can just play any of the other roles; there are enough of them to allow everyone to find one they are comfortable with. By the way, I'm used to getting press for my ideas (it has happened in the past), but that's just the price I have to pay for trying to be innovative. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 07:05, 16 April 2014 (UTC)
let me preface this by saying that i understand that the ultimate audience for this (of whom i am one) is a literal handful of people who fall at the dweebier end of the autistic spectrum. so no one cares or is likely to.
you don't need to defend anything. i am not attacking you, merely pointing out that your use of crude gender stereotypes will be found offensive by many. i understand why misogyny and homophobia wouldn't push your buttons. i hope you would understand why you shouldn't use racial stereotypes and that if you did people would complain. i don't expect you to change your mind on this, or even acknowledge that you can see my point. that you could write this at all shows such insensitivity to the issues at hand and such a deep ignorance that there even are issues that i may as well be writing in khmer. i've said what i could, now i'll shut up. --194.116.198.185 12:18, 16 April 2014 (UTC)

Hi there, I'm a gay man and a huge fan of Slash'EM Extended and just wanted to chime in that I really don't find the transvestite role to be offensive at all. If anything it seems like an affectionate tribute to drag queen culture, which is pretty self-parodic and tongue-in-cheek as is. Not sure if it counts for anything but it's just my two cents. Keep up the good work on your variant, it's a lot of fun! -BellisColdwine (talk) 18:34, 23 May 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for the feedback! Nice to see that there's people like you who realize I was just trying to make a satirical/fun role. Of course Slash'EM Extended development will continue; in fact just now a new version has been uploaded, re-creating the old Elf role that used to be playable in NetHack 3.22, and there's also new traps and a wand from SporkHack as well as a new attack type for monsters. If you like Slash'EM Extended, you may want to download the new version. :-) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 06:00, 26 May 2014 (UTC)
Thanks, just downloaded it! It's great how often you're able to release updates for this fork. -BellisColdwine (talk) 04:00, 29 May 2014 (UTC)
You didn't find it offensive because as a gay man you are at most a tangentially minor target of the offense, so no, it doesn't count for anything. This is specifically about Drag culture itself and the tons of issues surrounding it as it is to need an "affectionate parody" that makes crude jokes of it. Regardless of intent, stuff that perpetuates stereotypes is problematic and harmful and does rightfully offend people, because the issue at hand is insensitivity and ignorance anyways.
So no, it being meant as a joke doesn't make it not offensive. But as the other person said, it's kind of a pointless discussion as you don't really care about these things anyways as the fact that you actually went through and put this in the game shows the bigotry involved.
This is "let's make a nazi role that kills all the jews monsters xD"-level garbage childish humor. It deserves nothing else but to be called out on being offensive and bigoted, and how you respond to this instead of apologizing defensively and calling for "innovation" even though you know perfectly well this is about the crude as hell flavor (that is in no way innovative in itself, "lol deranged sicko tranvestites" is a common trope).
But eh, aside from that go along with it. It's not like the problems this causes extend beyond driving a tiny number of people people away (because no, I'm not playing another class, I don't want to play a game that the developer put this stuff in it) and welcoming bigotry within a space that already has its share of. --95.122.163.130 23:26, 17 June 2014 (UTC)
I attend drag shows semi-regularly and have a fair number of friends involved in the culture (I've even participated in a few shows myself back in college), and to me it seems most of the entertainment value comes from taking stereotypes and making them into an over-the-top, self-parodic pageant. I grew up in an environment that was inhospitable to that kind of thing to say the least, and so I might just have tougher skin with regard to these kinds of jokes. I didn't interpret the role as a reference to trans people so much as to drag queen culture-- Making Lady Gaga the chaotic god seems to corroborate this somewhat. Anyway, sorry to hear the role bothered you but keep in mind it's probably not worth stressing over an obscure Nethack fork; hopefully you find another you're more comfortable with. Also, comparing a transvestite role to Holocaust jokes is patently ridiculous IMHO. --BellisColdwine (talk) 05:30, 21 June 2014 (UTC)

SO let me get this right. You find yourself playing a game where you need to kill thousands of people to win, stealing from shop is encouraged and human sacrifice is not only allowed but offers some advantages and your problem is with some gender bender charecter option. Mind you this coming from a came that is entirely in ACSII text so any offensive images have to be conjured up by your imagination. Maybe the problem is with your imagination and not with the game broNdwolfwood 02:22, 22 September 2014 (UTC)

I love the transvestite role. As soon as I saw the description, had to try it. I decided to hurry down to mine town to see if I could tame all the guards. Along the way, I mounted my pet and kicked some serious ass with my hammer shoes. I love pounding weapons in rpgs, so this theme worked out great. Found a broadsword for my pet. We cleaved a path through gnomes until she got killed. No problem, by then I was Skilled in hammer and found some dwarven mail and a big shield. Kicking ass on foot until I got to Mine Town to see that it was being plundered by Orcs! I didn't know this could happen in Nethack?! Awesome. I bashed down iron bars and went for it. The only guard I found was polymorphed into a jelly. I put him out of his gelatinous misery. Damn orc thief took my hammer shoes. Went kung fu on their ugly faces barehanded. I chased that thief forever. I'd catch up, he'd rob me, I'd have to chase him again. Even saw the caption for the orc wielding my shoes! How dare he?! Tried to tame the orcs, blew it, killed another half dozen with a scimitar. Then one pulled a wand of fire and hosed me. YASD.

One try at this made it my favorite new role. The transvestite is an butt kicking warrior class. I wish I could draw, because a man in heels smashing orc skulls with a flail would be a badass image. Love it. And thanks for all the new stuff you added to this game. --24.91.196.57 04:39, 2 November 2014 (UTC)

Hahahahahahaha... Thanks a lot for your kind review! :) It's weird that watchmen can actually be tamed; I always thought the "conflicting structure" code prevents that but it actually works in wizard mode. However, tame watchmen will somehow be able to attack a player that commits property damage or other crimes even if they're tame (wtf), so the player will have to be careful.
The Orcminetown variant of Minetown is from Sporkhack; it's basically a pillaged version of Minetown with no living shopkeepers or watchmen, and there is no way to bring them back to life as the fungus/jelly/blob forms can't be unpolymorphed. Taming the orcs with the attire charm technique *should* be possible since they're an intelligent monster type, I just tested it with a hill orc in wizard mode. For some reason it says "ÿM♠☻áû< is charmed, and wants to be your friend!" No idea why it's displaying that weird string but other than that it works fine. However, the attire charm doesn't work at all if one isn't wearing the right kind of footwear.
Anyway, thanks for enjoying the game, and maybe I'll see a Transvestite YAAP from you someday? And I'd also like to see the badass image you mentioned, I'm sure it would look great. :) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 07:02, 3 November 2014 (UTC)

Slash'EM Extended

Hi, and welcome to the wiki! (Sorry for this sounding so much like a canned greeting… it's not, I promise!) I've seen your variant's entry and your user page, so I decided to come up with some constructive suggestions:

  • You can format the list of features on your user page as an actual list like the one I'm using here (look at the page source). That looks nicer and is better for semantics and accessibility (be sure not to include blank lines between the list items; most users won't notice, but it actually creates multiple one-element lists).
  • You might want to upload some of those images to the wiki, especially those which might be used to illustrate your variant's article, so they can be embedded and displayed there. Also have a look at ttymaps, for example those used on the main page.
  • I'd probably put that feature list on your variant's page instead of your user page. Feel free to have whatever information you want on your user page and its subpages (well, try to keep it somewhat NetHack-related and nobody will complain), of course :)
  • Consider using a version control system, such as Git; that's generally a good idea, and all major forks use one. You could put your variant on Github, for example.

Unfortunately, due to the upcoming holidays, I haven't had time to actually play or even build your variant yet. I'll try it as soon as I have time, though! :) —bcode talk | mail 20:38, 17 December 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the hints, bcode! Currently I'm also quite busy with other stuff (christmas preparations etc.) but I'll try out your suggestions as soon as I get the time to do so. Unfortunately real life sometimes forces me into doing things that are time consuming and not as fun as NetHack but once I get them out of my way I'll certainly do some edits. :) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 06:57, 18 December 2013 (UTC)

Linux Support

Dear BSOD,

I'm interested in your variant. I'm currently playing SLASH'EM and would love to play a SLASH'EM that has even more content. Have you considered porting the game to Linux? (generally this means it would work on Mac OSX as well).

Also, it would be a good idea to upload the source to a CVS like GitHub, because supporters can submit patches (pull requests) and stuff like that easily. It's a very nice platform for collaborating on code.

Thanks for the game! --NewWorld (talk) 18:51, 23 February 2014 (UTC)

Uh... actually I don't know how to port the game to another OS, but the source code is available, so if you like, you can port it yourself (if you know how that works). Since all of my PCs are running Windows XP, I don't really have a lot of experience with Linux or OSX. About Github, well I thought about that too but I'm not sure about how that works either. Maybe if I find the time I'll see what I can do, though. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 07:01, 24 February 2014 (UTC)
Got news about linux support - someone told me they apparently got the game to run under Unix/Linux by using "Wine", an emulator-like tool. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 11:36, 18 November 2014 (UTC)

Race/Class Matrix?

Have you given thought (or actually completed) a matrix of what the various races/classes can/can't/should/shouldn't do?

Examples: Race: Ghast - can only eat corpses which have a degree of rot on them. Fruit and normal rations can not be eaten. Race: Snake - do not have feet to kick open a door. Race: Ungenomolds - polymorph on creation and possess polymorphitis.

Class: Chevalier are similar to Knights and accumulate sins if the strike a fleeing monster. Class: Convict gets hungry early and often, starts with negative luck, negative alignment and lots of sins. Class: Death Eaters - "feel dead inside" (I haven't figured out what that means, yet) ——Diesalot (talk) 19:06, 9 May 2014 (UTC)

Good idea, I'll probably do that soon. Actually, the "you feel dead inside" message is caused by playing an ungenomold character and means their original race has been genocided; if they ever un-polymorph (and thus turn back into their starting ungenomoldic form), they die with no chance of life-saving. Death Eaters are difficult to play for another reason though: their movement speed is low. Apart from that they're a spellcasting role.
A complete list with the important characteristics of all new races/roles will appear soon, so stay tuned. Thanks for the suggestion! :) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 05:53, 12 May 2014 (UTC)
Done! The race and role difficulty pages give important information about all the new roles and races. These are also linked from the main Slash'EM Extended page now for easy access, and include recommendations for beginning players who don't want to die all the time. :) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 09:03, 12 May 2014 (UTC)

Not sure if this is the place to suggest this, but I think it would be a lot of fun to have a nymph-based player race with high charisma, intrinsic teleportitis, and the ability to steal items with the #borrow command. Most n's would start out peaceful to them. I don't know if this would be hard to implement but I thought it might make a good addition in a future version! --BellisColdwine (talk) 20:29, 30 June 2014 (UTC)

Something like that is actually planned already, and will probably exist sooner or later. Don't know about the exact implementation that I'm going to use for this, but an item-stealing role/race will be added at some time. In fact, there are tons of roles and races that I have planned, but I currently have a character in progress that just doesn't seem to die :D, so I can't add any major things at the moment. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 05:48, 1 July 2014 (UTC)
Currently working on it; they will probably appear in a new version very soon. However, in order to make them less overpowered, they start chained to a heavy iron ball that randomly gets heavier, they can't remove it with the #monster command, and if they somehow manage to remove it, a new one may be chained to them after a period of time. Otherwise, they get the benefits of teleportitis, being able to steal from monsters by attacking in melee, and nymphs start out peaceful. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 08:22, 17 July 2014 (UTC)
Great! I'm looking forward to playing it as soon as my current character shuffles off the mortal coil or ascends (unlikely). I imagine a spellbook of knock is going to be a pretty vital item to get unless I'm feeling lazy and just play as a Zyborg. Congratulations on the featured article, by the way! --BellisColdwine (talk) 23:02, 18 July 2014 (UTC)
Well, a heavy iron ball is a good weapon too, and every character can advance the flail skill by using it. Otherwise, yeah; a nymph with an ability to remove the ball will probably be easier to play. Thanks for your feedback, and I hope you enjoy the game; please don't forget to make backups of high-level characters so you don't lose all your progress on the off chance that the game crashes! :) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 12:04, 20 July 2014 (UTC)

Featured Article

Maybe you could feature your variant's article yourself, rather than politely suggesting it. It's definitely deserving. Unfortunately, nobody seems to be taking care of featured articles lately. --Tjr (talk) 13:06, 12 May 2014 (UTC)

Thanks, Tjr! I'll try my best to make it work. :) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 05:46, 13 May 2014 (UTC)
Okay, it's scheduled to be displayed in July now (didn't want to remove the June article because it's about a tournament that always seems to run in June). --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 05:57, 13 May 2014 (UTC)

Too much variant information

Nice work with your variant, but IMO you're turning this into a S'EM Extended -wiki. Is your variant really notable enough to spread all over? Consolidate the articles, eg. all the different player races/roles could be just two articles. Also categorize your articles! ----paxed (talk) 10:44, 13 May 2014 (UTC)

Okay, I'll try to put the pages into categories. About the articles for roles and races though, the original SLASH'EM also has individual pages for all of its added roles and races, and I consider Slash'EM Extended to be a notable variant (my download statistics show that there's probably over a hundred people playing it), so it would be nice if all those players have a chance to read spoilers about the variant.
But maybe a tag could be made that flags pages as "Slash'EM Extended" (the original SLASH'EM pages have a tag that says SE0.0.7E7F2 or something like that)? --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 10:53, 13 May 2014 (UTC)

I also would not mind one-stop shopping in regard to finding all of this variant flavor in one place. BsoD, is there a feedback mechanism for you knowing how many player/games/results? I can contribute my measly 20+ games played logfile, if you would like. --Diesalot (talk) 14:55, 15 May 2014 (UTC)

Well I've added some categories that will help when trying to find stuff, but quite some things (like most of the new items and monsters) are still undocumented as of now, and I'll probably just create a "Slash'EM Extended bestiary" and "Slash'EM Extended items" page someday that shows the new things without cluttering the wiki with lots of single pages. Anyway, Category:Slash'EM_Extended_races and Category:Slash'EM_Extended_roles as well as the "getting started" links on the main Slash'EM Extended page give an overview of some important features now.
The only current source of knowledge for the # of games played is my download statistics that shows how many times the binaries and source code have been downloaded, but if you like, you may share your logfile. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 06:33, 16 May 2014 (UTC)

My goal is to get to about 50 games played and I will share you my logfile in a way you would prefer. --Diesalot (talk) 12:43, 16 May 2014 (UTC)

Okay, that's great; you may send it to me by e-mail if you want (I fear there is no private message feature on the wiki). My email is failureclockATNOSPAMgmxDOTde; replace ATNOSPAM and DOT by @ and . respectively. :-) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 15:22, 18 May 2014 (UTC)

"I'm wondering if Unnethack and other variants are still being updated, too?"

They most certainly are! These are the ones I'm aware of that are still actively developed:

For the GitHub sites you'll want to click on "XXXX commits" in the upper left to see the exact code changes. --Tungtn (talk) 09:35, 26 May 2014 (UTC)

Wow, I didn't know there are still so many forks being developed. That's great, as it means more sources for me to steal stuff from :D! Lots of features in Slash'EM Extended have in fact been imported from other NetHack forks, even though I also added quite some all-new stuff. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 10:41, 26 May 2014 (UTC)

Keeping separate variants under separate headers

It's great you are adding info about your variant to the wiki. One more way to get vanilla players interested. It might be confusing to newbies if we talk about different variants on one pages. Therefore, would you please keep anything about Slash'EM Extended under a separate header "==Slash'EM Extended=="? Thank you, --Tjr (talk) 12:29, 5 June 2014 (UTC)

Okay, wanted to do so anyway, but sometimes I just forget to do so and accidentally add it somewhere in between. I'll try to pay more attention when making future edits, making sure my variant info gets its own header without cluttering up the vanilla information. :-) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 05:50, 6 June 2014 (UTC)

Tileset

Would making a tileset for this be simple? Would it just need the regular Slash Em tilesets, or would all the stuff you added need tiles too? 69.253.158.202 11:05, 20 July 2014 (UTC)Chezzo

Unfortunately it would be quite difficult; not only are there tons of new monsters and items that would need tiles, but I also don't know how to integrate them into the game. It would probably require someone with in-depth knowledge as to how to make them work, as well as someone who actually draws them. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 12:04, 20 July 2014 (UTC)
Aww, many of the other variants, DawnHack and UnNetHack, have their own tilesets. Since this variant is the most detailed, I was hoping to make you one.

Some questions about slashem extended

I'm glad you're working on continuing the slashem project, but I have a few questions about your variant. Why do redguard girls release spores to poison me when I attack them? Also, why do I sometimes find jackboots that are encased in rock inside of shops sometimes? --Bug sniper (talk) 02:05, 23 July 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for the feedback! Some monsters may have unexpected and sometimes nasty attacks; for example, redguards are supposed to be highly resistant to catching diseases, yet carry the pathogens in their bodies, so coming into contact with them may infect the player. Items embedded in some terrain feature are an intentional addition; I was growing bored with the all-the-sameness of random rooms-and-corridors levels so I added some extra randomness. Those encased items can be dislodged by kicking them though.
If the version you're currently playing doesn't already have the feature that allows the player to see all of a monster's attacks by looking at it, you may want to download the newest version. It should guarantee that you won't experience nasty surprises by fighting monsters that are unexpectedly strong. :) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 10:29, 23 July 2014 (UTC)
I wouldn't know which version I have because, as you can see at http://imgur.com/LJs9dYy Slashem version numbers are still being used on the version command. I downloaded the version that was announced on roguebasin and so I think I have the most recent version already.
As for kicking things out of terrain features, it would be silly if the shopkeeper told me I had to kick the boots out of the glue they are embedded in, don't you think?
As for the monster, I guess that will then be one that I have to run away from and skip the corresponding level in order to not have my strength drained to 0. --Bug sniper (talk) 20:19, 23 July 2014 (UTC)
I love that kind of thing. Half the fun of Slash'EM Extended is the huge variety and silliness, in my opinion! I definitely get a kick out of doing something absurd like hurling a torpedo at an old man whacking me with a boot. By the way, Amy, out of curiosity is the Imperial race a sort of forced atheist conduct challenge? I've been playing around as an Imperial healer and making use of their special chat ability regularly but my god is consistently displeased upon prayer, even if I altar camp for a while and seemingly mollify them. Also, fabulous job on the improved look feature! It's very, very helpful considering the occasional lack of wiki info for new monsters.BellisColdwine (talk) 05:41, 24 July 2014 (UTC)
Well I should implement actual version numbers in the game, it seems... maybe that will happen soon, as the game is currently being updated very often - for example, just 10 minutes ago I uploaded a critical bugfix version that removes the crashiness from the Bleeder quest. Without this fix, the Bleeder quest is incredibly frustrating to play, so it's certainly a good idea to download the newest version. And yes, silliness is just what Slash'EM Extended is all about - most games are (for reasons that I can't understand) tailored to be "realistic" (although there would be enough examples where even vanilla NetHack isn't realistic) but IMHO it's much more fun if things can also be weird at times. The player is free to use their imagination: maybe the shopkeeper embedded an item in stone because it's particularly treasured to him, and he doesn't want anyone to easily get it, or maybe it was already embedded there when the shopkeeper decided to set up his shop in that room? About the strength-draining monster, well they can't drain the player's strength below 3, and poison resistance or using ranged attacks are some ways to prevent the loss of strength.
About the Imperial race: yep, they can't ever pray successfully, no matter what they do. They're not atheists though. Altars can still be used for sacrificing or BUC testing. Donations are still possible too. It's just so that gods never like Imperials praying to them, which is supposed to make them harder to play. There's another quirk of the Imperial race, too: they're much more likely to encounter out-of-depth monsters. Just fired up a testing game and there are rattatas and green molds on dlvl1 right at the start of the game, which usually doesn't happen for other characters. By the way, the improved look feature isn't entirely my work; I took it from Unnethackplus and modified it to display my variant's specific monster attributes too. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 06:04, 24 July 2014 (UTC)

Object selection bug

http://snag.gy/u49NP.jpg

As you can see in this screenshot, I was trying to select an item to identify. I was unable to select the gray stone because other objects were referenced with the same symbol. --Bug sniper (talk) 06:58, 24 July 2014 (UTC)

This can happen if your inventory holds more than 52 objects - since the alphabet only has so many letters, and they can only be either uppercase or lowercase, every extra item after you already have 52 ones will become a # symbol. Of course that's bad, but it's still better than not being able to carry more than 52 items at all IMHO; one neat thing that you can do is to pull out everything from your box if you're about to read a blessed scroll of identify, and hope it identifies all the items. For me it identified 9 pages worth of crap once. :D --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 07:08, 24 July 2014 (UTC)
I see. I'll have to remember then to hold on to the first chest I find. --Bug sniper (talk) 15:48, 24 July 2014 (UTC)
On another note, I think you'll want to have a way to select everything because the inventory letters aren't restored when you put other things into the container. You might want to look into cataclysm dda's inventory interface, or just give the option to not be able to pick up more than 52 objects. --Bug sniper (talk) 20:19, 24 July 2014 (UTC)
Well there are already certain commands that can be used, for example the . button selects everything in a menu that allows selecting several items, and the , button selects everything on the current page. Playing around with the adjust command can also help sometimes. Of course I know it could be better, but I don't have the coding abilities to rewrite the entire inventory management system... --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 05:56, 25 July 2014 (UTC)

Graphical interface?

Are there any plans to add tiles to slash'em extended?--98.232.21.23 23:25, 28 July 2014 (UTC)

Not really, since I don't even know how to do it, besides I'll certainly never use anything but ASCII myself. If someone were to make a tileset and show me how to integrate it into the game then things would be different, but the current situation is that even if there were tiles for every single new monster/object/trap/everything, I couldn't make them work since I don't know how to tell the game to use them. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 05:44, 29 July 2014 (UTC)

Black market becomes a standard level

http://puu.sh/awibk/e922253d0b.png

The black market isn't any different from a standard level with a portal to it in your version. There are no shops at all on this level. I was expecting to see a shop as big as a dungeon level here.

Good thing there are a lot of different roles in your game so I can try another once this is fixed. --Bug sniper (talk) 19:27, 29 July 2014 (UTC)

This is actually not a bug but an intentional feature: most special levels have a chance to not appear. Sometimes you get lucky and have most of them appear in your game, but since some of the special levels allow the player to get tons of good items (someone once said the mid-to-late SLASH'EM gameplay is the "Monty Haul" segment), most of the time not all of them will appear. It may be a shock to read this, but even Minetown, Mines End, the Sokoban prize level and several others aren't guaranteed anymore. Chances for a level to appear are as follows:
  • Shopping Mall: 75%
  • Oracle: 70%
  • Rat King: 20%
  • Kobold King: 20%
  • Aphrodite: 25%
  • Big Room: 75%
  • Busy Town: 75%
  • Storage Room: 30%
  • Guild of Disgruntled Adventures: 10%
  • Forge: 20%
  • Hitchhiker Level: 5%
  • Computer Room: 10%
  • Key Room: 10%
  • Jubilex, Yeenoghu etc. lairs: 95% for each

Otherwise, the level in question becomes a simple ordinary rooms-and-corridors level. No longer can players be like "well if I get to dungeon level X there will be a guaranteed special level that has just the missing item from my ascension kit"; personally, for me it is important that roguelikes have randomness, and guaranteed levels with guaranteed uberitems aren't very random at all. By the way, congratulations on getting so far with your Chevalier - I see you're XL 16, too! I wish my skills at this game were good enough to reliably get that far... An important bit of advice that I'm giving to everyone who takes a character that far into the game: make backups of your savegame file now and then. The risk should be very small but unfortunately there may still be some obscure and rare crash bugs that can mess up a savegame file (although this can apparently happen in other NetHack variants too), and I'm sure no one wants to lose a high-level character to a stupid crash bug. Good luck, and if you ascend, let me know! :-) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 06:07, 30 July 2014 (UTC)
That explains it. Perhaps a message like "Looks like this place has been demolished and rebuilt" would explain things better.
As for being able to get that far, being able to identify the blessed/cursed status of everything while being able to also wield tridents and cast healing, cure hallucination, slow monster, and magic missile for 0% failure wearing chain mail helped quite a lot. Also, monsters drop a lot of scrolls of healing and don't seem to use them, which helped me out more. And on another note, with all the scrolls and potions priced the way they are, selling one you know nothing about is now a good way to make a lot of money for buying services and tools. Also, fire traps, which were previously the most annoying thing about nethack, have thankfully been lessened in effect.
And I have had my own weird deaths on slashem extended, like from mass poisoning from redguard girls before learning to avoid them, and from sacrificing kestrels that I thought were birds but which made the gods angry. I'll make sure to save my game often to avoid crash bugs too, like you said. --Bug sniper (talk) 07:07, 30 July 2014 (UTC)
Well - adding such a message would make sense, but the way the game generates dungeons, there probably is no special flag set to tell the game that "this dungeon level usually loads a special level file but didn't"... One thing that I always wanted to do is change the "Dlvl:" display to reflect the actual subdungeon a player is in, so the player can tell they wandered into a branch dungeon that doesn't actually have its special level. Maybe a future version will have that feature (I think Unnethack already has it, so I might steal from their source code again :D).
About spellcasting while wearing heavy armor: it still hinders spellcasting but considerably less so, since I thought it was stupid to have to undress completely every time one wants to cast a spell. High-level spells will still be difficult to cast but other than that, "battlemages" are easier to play. Monsters not using scrolls of healing is weird, they're actually programmed to read them whenever their health gets low... Generally speaking, fire/cold/shock damage is much less likely to burn/freeze/explode items since I found it really obnoxious to lose nine out of ten scrolls just because of stepping on a fire trap once. The fire traps still reduce max HP if the character isn't resistant though, and they can randomly appear everywhere, not just in the Gehennom, so they can still be annoying and removing them is still hard to do.
By the way, did you download the updated version yet? You can recognize it by pressing the v key which will display something along the lines of "Slash'EM Extended version 0.57" now (the version number will correspond to the actual version of the game now thanks to your suggestion). This version allows the player to get additional info on monsters by farlooking them; for example the redguard girls will show they have a passive poison attack. The kestrels also show "Is the same race as you" if they are, hopefully reducing the danger of accidentally sacrifing or eating them (I frequently pissed off my god by doing the latter). Anyway, it's great to see people playing Slash'EM Extended, and I'm looking forward to reading more of your adventures! :-) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 07:37, 30 July 2014 (UTC)
I don't think I'll be doing that much more because I read a cursed scroll of teleportation at level 23 and got brought down to level 5. Also, a telepathic mind flayer attacked my and made me forgot a lot of stuff at level 23. Recovering from all that would probably be too boring, even if I use my backup save from level 20. In fact, amnesia might be getting outdated with the fact that I could just puush screenshots of my inventory after identifying everything, turning it into either an id scroll loss or a major exercise in tedium.
On another note, you might like to know that kestrels are a kind of bird, which is why it doesn't make much sense for them to be human. Perhaps the correct symbol for them is B, or you can change their type to kestrel cosplayer.
Anyways, thanks for an interesting set of changes to the game and I hope your efforts continue.--Bug sniper (talk) 05:18, 5 August 2014 (UTC)
Well, telepathic mind flayers are an intentional addition by a sadistic programmer :D; they're supposed to be very annoying. The telemindflayer can be genocided though. Of course I know that kestrels aren't humans, but there's the unofficial rule that everything represented by the letter K is human (well the sephiroth currently aren't, but that will be changed) and the kestrel is actually from another NetHack fork (could that be NHTNG?) where it happened to be a K. Don't know how to make the amnesia effect less boring though, at least not without making it useless/trivial... --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 05:50, 5 August 2014 (UTC)
The v63 update (which has just been uploaded) makes amnesia a lot less annoying by reducing the chance of item/map loss by a factor 5. This means telemindflayers are still annoying but considerably less so. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 09:57, 21 August 2014 (UTC)
Thanks a lot for doing that. On another note, do telepathic mindflayers teleport next to you if you'r not wearing a tinfoil hat? Or do they just do that if you have ESP? --76.91.12.55 19:32, 27 August 2014 (UTC)
They're covetous, so they use the same "teleport to player" routine like arch-liches or quest nemeses. A helmet just gives the chance of deflecting their brain-sucking attack, and ESP allows them to hit the character with psychic blasts. If they're awake and healthy, they may randomly decide to teleport to the player. Wounding them may force them into "teleport to upstairs and heal" mode. There might be some useful strategies to combat them (I haven't ever run into one myself): camping on an Elbereth square and waiting for it to teleport next to you; detecting it with telepathy and quickly making your way to it (perhaps by teleporting), then pelting it with ranged attacks hoping for a quick kill; or the obvious solution: uncursed genocide "telemindflayer". ;) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 08:49, 28 August 2014 (UTC)

Knife/dagger proficiency bug?

Messing around in Wizard mode, noticed knife and dagger proficiencies are bugged somewhere. For player, they maxed out at Undefined, and an orc wielding a knife repeatedly triggered a "program in disarray, please contact Amy Bluescreenofdeath" message. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to reproduce, but figured I'd let you know.

Also, I love Slash'em Extended. It's great. I've just started poking around in the source myself. Being from the USA though, some things don't quite work right immediately from the source file you posted. I'm having trouble getting the source to compile. http://imgur.com/r8rMzPd Truth be told I have no idea what I'm doing, let alone what I'm doing wrong. Figured you would know what's going on. Help?

--Paladin852 (talk) 22:33, 4 August 2014 (UTC)

There is a weapon proficiency bug that can strike if one tries to enhance too many skills in wizard mode. Apparently the game can't handle more than a certain amount of skill enhancements; I'm fairly sure the number is a power of 2 (could be 63 or 127), after which everything starts getting really weird. This won't happen in a real game though due to the limited amount of skill slots. It's also possible to trigger this message in wizard mode by playing certain roles (Bleeder for example) that don't start with their artifact weapon's skill; the game will simply unrestrict that skill though.
Your screenshot shows you're using MinGW too, so everything should be familiar. Reproducing your error message was easy for me - the C:\games\slam32d folder doesn't exist on your computer, and for some weird reason the compiler can't create it, so that must be done manually. Once you have done that, the compiler should work; if it doesn't, just tell me and I'll see if I can figure out what's wrong. Have fun, and thanks for your interest in my variant! :-) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 06:01, 5 August 2014 (UTC)

That did it! Thanks! I'm gonna go change things until they break now. :-) Keep being awesome --Paladin852 (talk) 12:57, 5 August 2014 (UTC)
Have fun! :-) And if you make some particularly awesome changes (e.g. adding a new playable character role or new types of monsters, or fixing a critical bug), you may want to show me the code of your changes so I can add them to Slash'EM Extended. Of course you can use the source code to make your own variant too, and if you have any questions, feel free to ask me. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 05:53, 6 August 2014 (UTC)

Jedi bones file bug

Hi!

Thanks for updating Slash'EM - its my favorite variant of Nethack, and since you included the Jedi patch (which i've been wanting to play for the longest time), i've been grinding those out.

The other day I ran into a bug - I had a Jedi that died on a Mines level with her lightsaber on, so when I came across her bones with another Jedi, Slash'EM dropped a "Program in disorder: ..." and said something about a lightsaber being lit (presumably my previous character).

I brilliantly forgot to take any screenshots of this to track it, and have yet to replicate it in Wizard mode, but felt I should drop you a note anyway.

Hi, and thanks for playing Slash'EM Extended! Trying to get a Jedi to leave a bones file in the Mines I managed to reproduce the bug, it says "end_burn: obj lightsaber not lit" or something like that. The game can still be saved and restored normally though; I don't really know what's causing the bug but it probably existed in SLASH'EM too (which always had lightsabers, they were just very hard to get). For now, I'll add it to the known bugs page. Thanks! --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 05:46, 15 August 2014 (UTC)

Nymph Suggestion

Recently I've been having a very good run as a Nymphian diver, but as I continue through the game and encounter better-armed enemies my item-stealing ability is becoming a huge nuisance. As nice as it is when I can strip a nasty enemy of their crystal plate mail and wand of draining, it's incredibly tedious when I'm fighting through a crowd of low-level foes and have to repeatedly drop a bunch of knives, helmets and jackboots after every couple of combat actions to avoid becoming burdened. Perhaps it would be a good idea to change the Nymph race's item theft ability so that it's utilized through #chat, much like the Imperial race's pacification ability. Just a thought! BellisColdwine (talk) 19:44, 17 August 2014 (UTC)

Hmm, I might give that a try, but I'll have to see whether it's worth the trouble to write an item steal function that's not based on an attack. Maybe I can make it work though. One of the main problems would be that it's not supposed to be possible to steal items while polymorphed into e.g. a gnome lord... --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 06:03, 18 August 2014 (UTC)
Success! You may want to download the updated version now. What I did is a bit different from your suggestion but I think it's actually quite elegant: now, whenever the player steals an item from a monster (by being of the nymph race, polymorphed into a nymph or otherwise capable of stealing stuff), the game will ask if the player wants to drop the items. No longer will the inventory cluttered by half a dozen chain mails just because a high-level nymph player is fighting a squad of mordor orcs. :) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 09:57, 21 August 2014 (UTC)
Thank you! That's a great solution-- We get the full benefits of item theft and don't have to worry about inventory headaches. I'll start up a nymphian korsair and try it out. :) By the way, off-topic question but what on earth is a Burned Moth Relay and is there any way to use it? I got one from sacrificing as a neutral Imperial binder but got a "You don't know anything about electronics!" message when trying to use it, and invoking it didn't appear to have any effect. I later maneuvered a geek down to my bones file but alas, they apparently didn't know anything about electronics either. Thanks and keep up the good work; your fork is insanely fun. BellisColdwine (talk) 20:43, 23 August 2014 (UTC)
Uhh... about the burned moth relay, I don't have any idea about it either. ;) It's an artifact item from NetHack-The Next Generation; perhaps it does something when invoked? The sources say it has a SPFX_PROTEC flag - wait a moment, this is supposed to give 2 points of AC when worn but the relay actually cannot be worn at all?! Maybe it gives the bonus just for being in the character's inventory? *wizmodetest* Yep! That's what it does. Just having it in main inventory improves the character's AC by 2 points. Have fun playing, and feel free to message me whenever you encounter something weird! :-) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 10:07, 25 August 2014 (UTC)
Thanks a lot, I'll keep that in mind the next time I run across it! That's quite a nice bonus in the lategame. I'll let you know if I run across anything else confusing. BellisColdwine (talk) 00:40, 26 August 2014 (UTC)

Jedi Role

I must admit I have not tried your slashem extended version yet. I set out to do something similiar a little while ago but sort of lost interested when I made my vision waaay too big (my vision was to clean up the code base before extending anything, and that proved to be a huge project).

Anyway, I did make a bunch of improvements on the Jedi patch. If you're interested, I could send you a patch. The details are here: http://nethackadventure.blogspot.com/2013/02/jedi-patch-v05-for-slashem.html

I read it today for the first time in ages and there's a not-so-much regretfully snarky tone, an unfinished paragraph—with perhaps a sprinkle of incoherency—and all that, but I think the point comes across more or less.

I'm not sure of a better way to contact you, so I hope my lack of familiarity with wiki platforms doesn't destroy your page.

Hmm. Well, actually I'm quite happy with the jedi role the way it is, but I may have a look at your patch if it's finished. It seems the main things you're changing is that lightsabers have a different chance of deflecting missiles/beams and there are new artifact gifts, are there any other changes? As a matter of fact the "Dark Jedi" is playable in Slash'EM Extended already, and I even posted a screenshot run of one here: http://forum.rpg.net/showthread.php?723346-(Let-s-Play!)-Slash-EM-Extended-a-NetHack-fork&p=18292131#post18292131 - while the "bloodthirsty lightsaber" might be a good idea, it would probably get annoying after a while and the player might just switch to longswords or something like that. The main problem I fixed with the jedi role is that the "charge saber" technique is giving way too few charges, but I just uploaded a new Slash'EM Extended binary a few minutes ago that improves it; if you're interested, you may read my screenshot run to see me run out of lightsaber power constantly. Anyway, thanks for your feedback, and maybe some of your changes will make it into my variant. :) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 07:49, 21 September 2014 (UTC)
I'd like to try out the patch before sending it to make sure it works with Slash'EM Extended. Is the source code available? (I assume it must be because of the Slash'EM license)
You mean the Slash'EM Extended source code? Here you go: https://app.box.com/s/szjtgjhqb8jpituffqth/ :) It already has the http://bilious.alt.org/?141 version of the Jedi patch applied, with some minor tweaks. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 10:47, 22 September 2014 (UTC)

I like your patch a lot! I was actually thinking about the possibility of beam reflection myself the other day. I particularly want a chance to use that artifact double red saber... It's rather powerful but the mere fact that it's two-handed will probably serve to balance it somewhat. --BellisColdwine (talk) 19:15, 22 September 2014 (UTC)

BSOD, thanks for the source for slashemextended. I haven't yet tried to port my patch to it, but will soon. Bellis, thanks for the comment. Both of you (or anyone for that matter) can get my patch at this link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bz_RzIqJppG_OUcxRFh5SG9Idkk/view?usp=sharing

Please let me know if you have any problems getting it.

It's just a diff for vanilla slashem-0.0.7E7F3. To apply the patch, I ran the following command in the slashem-0.0.7E7F3 root directory.

# patch -p1 < slashem-0.0.7E7F3-greg-jedi.diff

The patch command should work without issue (just tried it with a fork of Debian), but I haven't tried building and installing on my current setup. I don't quite remember, but I wrote the patch on either FreeBSD or Arch Linux, and I'm using a fork of Debian currently.

Thanks,

-greg

Hey, BSOD, have you ever tried building extended on a Linux system? Unless I'm doing some wrong, it doesn't seem to work in Linux currently. I can port it over if you'd like.

-greg

Hmm, if I try to download the patch it says something like "lately too many people tried to download it, so it's blocked for the moment"... Maybe the easier way would be to send it to me by e-mail: failureclockATNOSPAMgmxDOTde (replace the anti-spam strings by @ and . respectively). Building the game for Linux would be great but I don't have a linux system, so if you want to make a binary then by all means go for it! :) Please make sure you have the v70 source code though; you can check the version in patchlevel.h. If you're successful, you may send the linux binaries to me so I can make them downloadable for players. Of course they would need to be updated if I update the game version though. Thanks! --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 10:20, 25 September 2014 (UTC)

An idea regarding jumping

One thing I particularly like about Slash'EM Extended is that while it's very, very easy to die it minimizes deaths caused by a simple typo. For example, you won't get yourself killed when your finger brushes against a number key and you step into a pool of lava. Recently my very, very promising imperial Jedi Eloise was killed on the 19th floor after trying to jump one tile too far while running to the downstairs from a Karmic dragon and a sphinx. If I was able to just put a tile or two between myself and my pursuers I could have gotten downstairs and healed up, but as it were the missed turn resulted in my death.

I think it would be a welcome addition if you were to make it so that a "Too far!" message didn't cause you to miss a turn and would definitely be in the spirit of reducing typo-caused deaths. Just something to consider :) --BellisColdwine (talk) 19:07, 22 September 2014 (UTC)

Good idea, but I'll have to check whether the code in tech.c actually supports that. If the answer is yes, then of course that will be changed so it doesn't use up a turn if the player specifies an invalid location. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 05:49, 23 September 2014 (UTC)
Okay, I think I can make it work; all technique-related effects that don't actually do anything (like applying telekinesis to an empty space) will have to get "return 0" so they don't take a turn. It will be a while until it's done, but I'll try my best to make it work the way it's supposed to. :) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 06:02, 23 September 2014 (UTC)
Yeah! It's done! You may want to download the updated version now; due to some other changes, savegames might not be compatible any more, but all new jedis can enjoy the improved techniques now. The fix was extended to telekinesis too, so both jedi jump and telekinesis will not consume a turn if the player tries to target an unreachable space. The jedi jump won't be on timeout unless the player actually jumped either. And on an unrelated note, the new version enables a stronger version of player character ghosts; currently these have a 16% chance of appearing in a bones file of a character that was at least XL10 when he died, and high-level spellcasters may summon them as well. The latter case uses the high-score list; up to 1000 entries can be read, so you can meet all your deceased characters again. Some day I'll make them appear in graveyards too. Have fun! :) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 07:59, 23 September 2014 (UTC)
Thanks, Amy! I'm looking forward to running Eloise II with the new improvements to the game. No more opening up the wiki to count the tiles I can jump. As a side note... I just got the "killed by a filthy traitor" message for the first time :) --BellisColdwine (talk) 17:26, 23 September 2014 (UTC)
Haha, trying to have too much fun with incubi? :D There's also a small chance of your female character becoming pregnant if the incubus doesn't outright betray you. By the way, the recent version is v70; I updated the game several times yesterday, so if your version number reads something lower, you may want to re-download since v70 allows some weapons to be applied at iron bars to break them down. Doing so damages the weapon but hey, it's possible to remove iron bars now! ;) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 08:50, 24 September 2014 (UTC)

Random ideas for future additions

I had some thoughts on a couple potential additions to the game for future updates; feel free to use them or not! I know very little about coding so bear with me if my suggestions are impossible to actually implement :P. I thought a "scientist" class could be a fun add-on. It would start with a chemistry set and spellbook of chemistry, as well as a lab coat, gloves, a scalpel, some nasty potions (cyanide, radium, acid, sickness, or paralysis?) and maybe the research and tinker techniques. It would have relatively poor HP growth and weapons skills, but would have good power gain and be able to reach expert with matter spells and skilled with healing. Basically a more offensively-oriented healer-like class that can start using alchemy sooner than most characters.

The other thing I thought would be cool would be to add a strong, unique artifact weapon for each alignment that is the first sacrifice gift ONLY after converting permanently to that alignment. Characters who had finished their quests and obtained the Bell of Opening could decide whether it was worth the trade-off of losing their divine protection and risking blast damage from their quest artifact and current weapon in order to access one of these special ones. Let me know what you think, and if any other S'EX players have ideas for more ways to spice up the game feel free to post them here :) -BellisColdwine (talk) 18:28, 25 September 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for the suggestions; I was planning to add more roles and races anyway, so suggestions are always welcome! Implementing the scientist role should be easy. However, about converting, it's already possible to beat the quest even if a player has converted since the quest downstairs is open by default. So it's not even necessary to talk to the quest leader at all, and guaranteed overpowered weapons aren't what this fork is made for since they nuke variety to oblivion (sorry). This is also the reason why the overpowered artifacts from the new Jedi patch probably won't make it into my variant. I might add some weaker artifacts though. But anyway, suggesting ideas is good, so if you have any others, feel free to post them here. :) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 09:58, 26 September 2014 (UTC)
That's a fair point, it wouldn't do to homogenize possible strategies too much. By the way, my imperial diver had a hilarious death two nights ago that I thought you would get a kick out of: "You feel here an invisible statue of a slimy bug. The statue comes to life! The slimy bug hits! You don't feel very well." -BellisColdwine (talk) 17:50, 28 September 2014 (UTC)
The current development version (which hasn't yet been uploaded) has the Scientist role, and I think you might like playing it. :) Some other new roles and races will be playable, too, including Greg's Psion role. About your YASD: statue traps have a 20% chance of being invisible, which was a sadistic YANI that I had while thinking about beefing up traps; seems it works as intended :D. However, being able to see invisible neutralizes the threat of invisible statues. And finally, there's going to be another new feature that should be a lot of fun, too. Teaser screenshot:

--Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 09:45, 29 September 2014 (UTC)

Yikes! As if hallucination weren't nasty enough already :P Anyway, I'm excited to try out those new roles. I'm particularly looking forward to playing a scientist and brewing up some of the deadlier potions for a little chemical warfare. As always, thanks for your active updates and wonderfully open approach to community input. -BellisColdwine (talk) 01:13, 30 September 2014 (UTC)

Version v71 is up now; it doesn't have all the planned new roles yet, but there are some playable ones that have been added already. Also, traps on dlvl1 should no longer segfault now (this error resulted from my stupidity; v70 often crashes if a level 1 character encounters a trap on dlvl1). Savegame and bones files are no longer compatible but due to v70's nasty segfault bug it's certainly a good idea to update now. Have fun playing a scientist, I hope I made him similar to what you had in mind! ;) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 06:07, 30 September 2014 (UTC)
The scientist role is great, even better than I'd hoped! That beefed-up starting lab coat is really nice to have as well. I've been playing neutral scientists in the hope of getting hold of a PYEC via a wish :) I should also let you know that the new clockwork automaton role appears to have a game-crashing bug. When I threw a potion, the game informed me that I had thrown THREE of them and then crashed. Looks like the automaton is trying to throw objects it doesn't have. Once this issue is ironed out automatic scientists should be very deadly indeed... I doubt your average shopkeeper could handle being pelted with three potions of cyanide at once! >:D -BellisColdwine (talk) 18:05, 30 September 2014 (UTC)
Uh... that happens if I don't test my changes thoroughly :), the automaton is supposed to have a multishot bonus with thrown items, but it shouldn't activate if they only have one such item, so this will be fixed soon. A new version will appear soon, so stay tuned! --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 08:26, 1 October 2014 (UTC)
Okay, new version is up; now the automaton only tries to throw items it actually has ;), which means it should no longer crash. So if you have three potions of cyanide, you can actually throw them all in a single turn. Unfortunately shopkeepers have 50% magic resistance though, and a low-level character is likely to miss him with a thrown potion, so it won't exactly instakill him in one round of combat... Also, the new version once again breaks save/bones file compatibility due to some new monsters being added. The automaton's booze technique is actually meant to be the signature technique of the "Drunk" role which will be implemented in a future version; for an automaton, it provides some nutrition in addition to the standard effects of a booze potion. By the way, quaffing a potion of oil gives even more nutrition to an automaton character.
Now, have fun playing automatic scientists which should be crashing the game no longer! :) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 08:49, 1 October 2014 (UTC)
Perfect! Automatons will make great scientists, I think. The booze technique is a nice way to grab an occasional bonus bottle, and the starting chemistry set means it's easy to acquire plenty of oil if hunger becomes an issue. -BellisColdwine (talk) 18:33, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

Cool! The Dungeon collapses...

Hi Amy. Firstly, congratulations on an excellent game. Having played all the variants back to Hack and Amulet of Yendor in the 1980s (yes I'm old) I think SLASHEM Extended is a worthy successor to the roots of the genre. The sheer volume of character variations combined with the range of difficulty options (harder/easier) makes this game playable for many years to come.

I had a Dungeon Collapse on me recently (version 0.72.7E7F2) which is cool in itself as I haven't had that happen since 1983 (Ah, memories!). The Bug I report has come from the Automaton again - My Clockwork Necromancer threw a rotten newt corpse to my pet Ghoul and bam! The Dungeon Collapses.

--Sir Jaded (talk) 22:44, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for your interest in the variant! With a variant this big, there's always a chance to stumble upon bugs; however, it seems you unfortunately grabbed a version from before the clockwork automaton bug has been fixed. The game has been updated to version v74; I explicitly tested a clockwork necromancer by wishing for a single newt corpse and throwing it to my starting zombie pet to make sure it's no longer crashy. The error resulted from an oversight; I had forgotten to make sure the automaton doesn't try to throw several items if a stack only has a single one, but it should be working now; you may want to download the new version (the link is still the same). However, if you still have savegame or bones files from v72 they won't be compatible with the new v74. Thanks for your feedback, and I hope you can enjoy the game without crashes now! :) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 06:00, 2 October 2014 (UTC)

Announcing critical bugfix update

Version v75 is out and finally fixes a very annoying, long-standing segfault bug associated with traps! This error could happen anytime at random and crash the game with no message, but thankfully I managed to find the cause and fix it. All players are advised to download the newest version. Have fun! :) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 15:36, 8 October 2014 (UTC)

Officer's pet drops his gun

I'm not sure if the officer's pet is really supposed to drop his pistol and make it so that I can duel-wield pistols form the start. Are you sure the officers are ready? --Bug sniper (talk) 01:21, 12 October 2014 (UTC)

Well, pets using ranged attacks aren't implemented, so they wouldn't be able to use their pistol anyway. Dunno whether dual-wielding them allows you to fire twice as many bullets (I haven't really tried to do that yet), but if the answer is yes, that makes the Officer role more powerful. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing since they're otherwise not one of the strongest roles, and the player runs out of bullets twice as fast if both pistols are fired at the same time. Officers (as well as many other roles that appear on page 3 of the "Choose your role" screen, e.g. musicians, locksmiths etc.) are experimental roles from an old SLASH version (one that didn't even have the "Extended Magic" label yet) which I ported over, so some of them may still be a bit quirky but all of them should be playable. Thanks for your feedback, and feel free to message me if you encounter anything weird! :) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 05:46, 13 October 2014 (UTC)

Couldn't make a level

At the main dungeon level 12, I went down a staircase. It said that there was a warning, and that the game couldn't find a file and was making a maze level instead. The next level looked like a maze level.

Aside from these glitches, I'm really liking your version. --Bug sniper (talk) 13:26, 15 October 2014 (UTC)

AC bug to report

http://puu.sh/cdcmE/7ebaa30228.NetHack-saved-game

In this savefile, picking up the leather armor and putting it on will not change the AC that is displayed for you. --Bug sniper (talk) 14:24, 15 October 2014 (UTC)

The "makemaze" glitch is just a workaround that looks like a bug; there doesn't seem to be any other way to generate a random maze outside of the Gehennom, so I brute forced the issue by pointing to a level file that doesn't exist. About the AC bug, due to version incompatibilities I currently can't test your savegame file but I might have an old, compatible version at home which can load it. Other than that, some info might be useful for me, e.g. your character class/race and the enchantment of the armor; maybe I can reproduce it in wizard mode. But I've seen some weird behavior of the player's armor class too, including AC values greater than 10 (shouldn't be possible)... --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 10:47, 16 October 2014 (UTC)
For that reason, it could be a good idea to include the version number inside the savefile. I was using version 75. --Bug sniper (talk) 16:10, 16 October 2014 (UTC)
Nevermind, I think I figured it out. Doppelgangers have natural AC, which I completely forgot about after a few years of not playing the game. --Bug sniper (talk) 06:20, 18 October 2014 (UTC)
Yeah, found out about that too when I managed to load your savegame file. It's an undocumented SLASH'EM feature it seems, and the doppelganger page doesn't mention it yet; while not wearing armor, doppelgangers get a level-dependant bonus to their AC. On a side note, lycanthropes have a similar AC bonus. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 19:48, 18 October 2014 (UTC)

A very strange bug

Yesterday I had an odd dungeon collapse glitch occur while playing a binder-- I quaffed a potion of polymorph and the game informed me that I turned into a monster called something like "A Pupil Experiment- Cut off your own ears" (no joke!). The dungeon collapsed immediately after, but thankfully I was able to recover the game by removing the ".e" from the name of my crashed save file. The odd monster I had polymorphed into appeared as a gray 7, and gave error messages upon attempting to attack, kick, or pick things up. Fortunately I was able to throw things just fine and unpolymorphed myself by tossing my weapon upwards several times.

As a side note, that Albae Binder is doing very well now and I think I have a good chance of winning the game! She's dual-wielding the +7 Vorpal and Verbal blades for easy beheadings, has very low AC, is expert in two-weaponing, long sword, short sword, attack and matter magic, and has just obtained the castle wand. I have half a mind to wish for a blessed figurine of "A Pupil Experiment- Cut off your own ears" :D --BellisColdwine (talk) 19:04, 18 October 2014 (UTC)

This bug has been fixed, but unfortunately the fixed version probably won't be able to load savegame files, so you should ascend your Binder first :) and then download the updated version. For the time being, stay away from polymorph traps/potions if you can - as long as you're wearing dragon scale mail, there is a 20% chance to encounter this dungeon collapse bug. It's great to see you running a successful character; I've never been able to get anywhere with a Binder... Don't forget to post YAAP if you actually manage to win ;). Wishing for a figurine of the bugged monster isn't going to work though. If you're strong enough to handle the 10% chance of a hostile figurine result, you might want to wish for a blessed figurine of a Kaster Maen though (it works in wizard mode; I'm not sure if it works in a regular game too). Anyway, good luck! Let's hope you don't run into any critical bug, or if you do, then hopefully you'll have a backup savegame file that you can fall back on. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 19:54, 18 October 2014 (UTC)
Hmm. Forget I said anything about the figurine, as I just discovered it doesn't work in explore mode. Better use that wish to get some ascension kit item instead. ;) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 19:58, 18 October 2014 (UTC)
Thanks, things are looking good so far! I did run into one hiccup I could use some insight on. Although I wan't able to successfully track down the portals to the alignment quests, I channeled my inner rogue and woke up Vlad by polymorphing into a grandmaster mind flayer and blasting him telepathically. He came to fight and I seemed to have the upper hand, and then he fled around the corner. When I closed in he was nowhere to be found! My helm of telepathy confirms he's not in his tower. Can Vlad randomly levelport? Any specific parameters for where he could have ended up or should I teleport to floor one and start searching methodically? Thanks for any help you can provide, Amy- Looking forward to ascending this character :)

Edit: Never mind, I found him wandering around on floor 14 and neatly decapitated him.--BellisColdwine (talk) 01:17, 19 October 2014 (UTC)

Well done! On a side note - yes, he can levelport randomly :D, this has been done on purpose so the player has to hunt him down. Killing him quickly may prevent him from teleporting away but if he does, the player may search the entirety of the Dungeons of Doom and Gehennom hoping to find him. :) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 06:00, 20 October 2014 (UTC)

No Fake Wizard's Tower?

I seem to have run into what might be a game-ending bug: There's no Fake Wizard's Tower in Gehennom! I scoured the entirety of Gehennom looking for it but have had no luck whatsoever. I have encountered a couple of cave-style levels on floors eligible to contain the Fake Wizard's Tower, which makes me worried that one of these levels has in fact replaced the Fake Tower itself! I am also unable to find the vibrating square... The lowest level of Gehennom appears to have been replaced by a special floor consisting of a symmetrical room with a chamber full of water and an altar to Moloch in the middle. It's impossible to dig down there and I've stepped on every tile trying to find the vibrating square, including those occupied by water (I have swimming and unbreathing). I really hope that these special rooms haven't replaced vital components of Gehennom :X --BellisColdwine (talk) 20:56, 19 October 2014 (UTC)

This sounds bad, but it should be impossible for that to happen as the relevant levels did always get generated in my testing games so far... There must be a set of downstairs on the special level somewhere; it's certainly possible for special Gehennom levels to be undiggable so they aren't automatically the vibrating square level. In fact, the vibrating square - SPOILER!!! - always appears on level 64, so if you haven't been to that dungeon level yet then it should still be there. Levelporting might take you there, too. Maybe a screenshot of the level in question would allow me to see what exactly it is, though. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 05:58, 20 October 2014 (UTC)
I have good news and bad news: The good news is that I was able to levelport down and find the Fake Wizard's Tower. The bad news is that a dragonbreath nymph seduced me, removing my black dragon scale mail and allowing a keter sephirah to disintegrate me on the following turn. Perhaps for my next game I'll play a Nymphian character or a Psion so I can avoid disrobing at inopportune times. I'll ascend one of these days! :) -BellisColdwine (talk) 07:41, 20 October 2014 (UTC)
Ouch! That's unfortunate, I started to think you might beat the game. Actually the nymph would have been able to disintegrate you as well by using her random breath attack; one way to prevent that death would have been gaining intrinsic disintegration resistance from eating some corpse that conveys it. Anyway, I'd advise you to download the newest version before you restart so as to not encounter the "pupil experiment" crash bug again. Good luck, maybe your next character will win! :) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 10:09, 20 October 2014 (UTC)

Dungeon collapsed

http://puu.sh/ck9KC/e8bd763238.png

I was a lost soul acid mage doppelganger and I made it up to level 20 and character level 18. I was trying to end my hallucinations by polymorphing into something resistant to them. I was no longer familiar with vampire dazzlers so I tried polymorphing into a pseudosweet nymph since I saw from Monster_(Slash'EM_Extended) that they also hallucination attacks and so might also be hallucination resistant. I bothered the gnoll crack-junkies from a tension room earlier so I was going to hallucinate for a very long time. This was after I used a power surge. I forgot what I became. I was forced to drop my weapon and armor and then the dungeon collapsed.

As to how I did so well as a lost soul:

For the first level, I used 4 acid orbs and the wand of acid to get to player level 2. The start is the hardest part because there are a lot of strong fast monsters that you have to get away from, which the liquid leap ability is useful for. For the first level, you have to save your acid orbs for monsters of levels less than 9. If you lose them all and all your power and you can't polymorph into something powerful, you're done for.

Then I kept spamming acid orb every level to get to the next level, until around level 9. Then I drank the potions of gain level that I found, and I found quite a few of them. I then used the doppelganger's special ability to become a vampire dazzler, which is probably even better than a star or fire vampire now. It is very important to skip the deeper town level and special levels, and go up quickly so that nasty stuff doesn't spawn. --Bug sniper (talk) 01:15, 21 October 2014 (UTC)

That's an annoying crash bug, and I think I've seen it once too, but it's very hard to track down... Can you recover your game? There are quite some ways to crash the game if something unexpected happens to the player's wielded weapon, e.g. applying a wielded cream pie is likely to crash, but the exact cause in your game may in fact be anything concerning items that don't work as they should...
The lost soul mode is a special challenge that I attempt often too, rolling random characters. If they end up being an elemental mage, mould/ungenomold, or get lucky with a random polymorph trap, then I often manage to get quite far, and starting spells (charm monster) in particular may also be useful; in fact, yesterday I had a snakey Activistor in lost soul mode who even made the top ten list by taming a water troll, a rapidash and an animated wedge sandal. The rapidash eventually got lost due to a trap door but the water troll was with me and killed lots of monsters until a fourth-wall breaker teleported on top of me and took me out in a single round of combat :(. But my best LostSoul character yet was a lawful female mouldic Undead Slayer who made it all the way back to dlvl1, then descended again and met her end on dlvl27 due to the drowning attack of a ; which ignored my previously quaffed potion of invulnerability.
But generally, lost souls often die quickly because of terrible stair placements, so unless they're an ungenomold (which starts with warning) and randomly polymorph into a wallwalking form, they're mostly a luck-based mission... --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 09:33, 21 October 2014 (UTC)
About the crash bug: http://sourceforge.net/p/slashem/bugs/589/ suggests that one of the items might have vanished; did any of your dropped-on-polymorph items happen to be made of glass, or otherwise vulnerable to breaking? That might allow me to reproduce it... --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 09:37, 21 October 2014 (UTC)
You might like to see the panic log file that was created: http://puu.sh/cl64T/353c16ca43.png. I don't remember if any of the items were made out of glass. --Bug sniper (talk) 19:59, 21 October 2014 (UTC)

You might be able to continue with your game! I suffered a dungeon collapse from a polymorph bug last week but was able to recover my character by manually renaming the collapsed save file and removing the ".e". Best of luck! I might use some of your tips for my own lost soul characters :) --BellisColdwine (talk) 20:51, 21 October 2014 (UTC)

I was able to continue the game that way. Thanks. I think I was killed by town monsters with a wand of death in a shop after teleporting away from a mimic in another shop in that game. --Bug sniper (talk) 21:17, 21 October 2014 (UTC)

I have got another crash at dungeon level 9. I was zapping a wand of bugging to get corpses to sacrifice. I was polymorphed into a fire vampire and attacking bugs bare-handed. The game crashed after I killed several bugs. This was not a panic save, so what I have are level files instead of a savefile at http://puu.sh/clegO/faa7f80494.zip.

I have 2 more questions. Do gremlins steal a doppelganger's intrinsic polymorph control? And are summoned acid orbs supposed to carry things that they seem to be dropping when they explode? --Bug sniper (talk) 21:17, 21 October 2014 (UTC)

Argh! The bug with the bugs was supposed to be fixed already, but I just did a quick test and instantly crashed after killing a single one... :( I'll have to look into it again and hopefully fix them once and for all. The "impossible gloves type" message is really weird though since item #1005 certainly isn't a set of gloves and it shouldn't be possible to wear it in the gloves slot... The next version will hopefully be free of bugged bugs seeing as I'm able to reproduce it but I'll still need to track down the exact cause.
About gremlins: yes, they can steal polymorph control, and there's probably not a lot of ways to get it back. Eating a ring of polymorph control (if it's an edible type) or maybe level-draining yourself so you can reach the XL that grants polycontrol again might be possible. The spheres dropping items is a bit imbalanced but it's a side effect of the routine that supplies monsters with items on generation; maybe I can figure out how to prevent spell beings from generating with them though. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 05:57, 22 October 2014 (UTC)
Okay, found the reason for the crash: currently bugs have a 1 in 6 chance to crash when killed, and heisenbugs have a 1 in 3 chance. This is because the game is trying to make a pack of floppies and the bugged randomizer routine either makes 0 or 1 packs. If it tries to make 0 of them, the game obviously crashes. Until I've made a new version without this bug, it's probably best to save your game if you're about to kill a bug, and fall back to that save in case it crashes. Unfortunately the crash can also happen if the (heisen)bug is killed by a pet, trap or anything else... :( It's weird that NhTNG (which is where they are from) had the same code in place, so either it was somehow working in that version or the code was bugged from the start... --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 06:08, 22 October 2014 (UTC)
Almost forgot to mention it: by using the recover utility I was able to restore your saved game. It's probably back at the beginning of the level you were on though (can't test it now since I don't have the right version of the game installed on this PC). --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 08:37, 22 October 2014 (UTC)
Okay, a new version has been uploaded where the bug is really fixed, but it breaks save/bones compatibility once again. Let's hope the dungeon collapses less often in version v80! :) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 10:47, 23 October 2014 (UTC)
I saw the new version. Thanks a lot for fixing that. --Bug sniper (talk) 14:37, 23 October 2014 (UTC)

Cannot melee keystone inspectors easily

I might as well point out a minor problem. I sometimes find keystone kops disguised as a terrain feature. When I try to move into them, they are not identified and I just get the message "Wait, there's a Keystone Inspector over there". This means that I miss the chance to see their glyph and someone who forgets to use the F key (me until now) will not be able to melee them. The same happens to hidden mimics, I think.

Good game still. --Bug sniper (talk) 10:21, 4 November 2014 (UTC)

This is yet another feature that might look unintentional at first - inspectors and certain other monsters (deformed fish, olog-hai permamimics, hidden molds etc.) are permanently mimicking things. The F key is the "solution" to this problem; however, a character that can detect monsters will be able to see them. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 10:28, 4 November 2014 (UTC)

Some new ideas

As you're still working on the game, I'd like to suggest a few more new ideas.

1. A dragon ball level. The boss is a unique saiyin with more than 9000 hp. If you apply a stethoscope to it, you break it and your yelling wakes up everyone nearby. The treasure is a few dragon eggs, a pink pill, and the Z-sword, which is a moderately powerful artifact sword that works as a pickaxe and releases a friendly old grandpa named Old Kai when activated.

2. Would be nice if, while wearing hippy boots, potions that cure hallucination, such as potions of sickness, allow you to correctly examine an item of your inventory, instead of getting "You are shocked back to your senses!" when you really aren't.

3. Maybe a potion of controlled polymorph would be an interesting way to give players decisions about whether to polymorph into something against a tough monster, or save it to cure stoning, sliming, or hallucination. It would have to be quite rare or else it would be overpowered. --Bug sniper (talk) 08:52, 8 November 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for the suggestions; unfortunately there are so many special levels already, adding any more would probably cause the game to crash with an "could not place level" bug. As of yet I can't tell whether your ideas will make it into the game, but maybe someday they will. However, the way hallucination works, it will jumble the item descriptions every time the player enters their inventory and making a "player knows this even while hallucinating" flag would be a lot of work... --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 09:32, 9 November 2014 (UTC)
I've given some thought to your ideas; the dragonball level might be implemented as a quest for a new role but since I'm not familiar with that series I'd need some more suggestions. The important ones would be the role name ("dragonball kid", "kamehameha fighter" and "super saiyan" are already being used for monsters), names for the gods, preferrably also rank titles, and quest home base and nemesis hideout names. Other than that, a name for the unique saiyan boss would also be nice; it *should* be possible to make him have 9000 HP and break stethoscopes if they're used on him. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 13:45, 11 November 2014 (UTC)
The rank titles can include Saiyin Prince, Saiyin General, Monkey Boy, and Z-Warrior. The quest home can be the Kame House and the leader Master Roshi. The nemesis can be Frieza, or dark Goku (to make sense in context), and the hideout can be the ship he arrives in. The gods can be Moori (law) Moori or Grand Elder Guru (law, character depends on time of game in namek history), King Kai (neutral), and Vegeta (chaotic).--Bug sniper (talk) 16:57, 17 November 2014 (UTC)
Okay, I'll try to add the role in the upcoming version v84. Thanks for the ideas! It's gonna be a while until it's done though, so for the time being, current version v83 should be very stable and lots of fun to play with new traps, better player polymorph routines and the added ability to play as a mummy. I'll announce it if I finish coding the saiyan role into the game. :) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 06:50, 18 November 2014 (UTC)
I have a few more ideas for the saiyin role. To make things reasonable, a super saiyin technique might as well be added that multiplies the damage dealt by 50, usable very infrequently because it tires out the saiyin. Maybe by 5 outside the quest nemesis level because, only nearby the quest nemesis, you find yourself so angry at him that this technique is 10 times as effective. Also, maybe add in an altar to Shenron where you can place 7 unhatched dragon eggs to get a wish. (Eggs to be added to the wyrm caves in dragons.des).

As a seperate idea, maybe monkey suits. They help to tame primates but, until than, they will be include to enter the trap type where they can throw poo at you. --Bug sniper (talk) 10:02, 18 November 2014 (UTC)

Good news: the Saiyan role is in the game now, with Dark Goku as a nemesis who has 9000 HP added to the standard amount a monster of his level gets. Applying a stethoscope at him will break it. It's also possible to randomly encounter Frieza who also has 9000+ HP. The Modified Z-Sword is the Saiyan quest artifact now, and on the quest there are quite some dragons, eggs and a pink pill. Old savegame and bones files are no longer compatible with the updated version though. Have fun! :) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 08:07, 8 December 2014 (UTC)

Compiling on Linux

I'm trying to compile it on Linux. I managed to have the source to compile with some changes, but they are too many errors with the levels compilation. --Quantum Immortal (talk) 08:14, 24 December 2014 (UTC)

Hmm. Well, I unfortunately can't diagnose what is going wrong since I don't have a Linux system myself; all I know is that someone apparently got it to work somehow. They sent me their modified makefiles which *should* be in the sys/unix folder, but if they don't work then I can only guess that it's not detecting all the level files correctly... :( --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 19:54, 25 December 2014 (UTC)
Hmmm, you put the utils in src but it was compiling in utils. I moved makedefs from src to utils, this fixed the compilation problems of the executable it self. However, the levels don't compile at all now. What else did you move/edited out of utils? Can you please move the files to their original position. You are breaking ALL the makefiles in sys.
You are too sloppy. Can you please delete all the redundant stuff. Do you really need "Kopie von dragon" 20 times in the source folder? And why all the levels in src? If you make clean before you upload it, the size is drastically reduced to 5MB. You should use a revision history system. They are several to choose from. You will easily go back to earlier versions. Also if you upload it to say sourceforge, it will be easier for others to contribute. You should also keep the same conventions with the files, otherwise you break all makefiles in sys. You should also have the mingw makefiles reside in sys and call a script to put them in the right place....
Disclaimer, i'm bad in programming. :D--Quantum Immortal (talk) 07:42, 26 December 2014 (UTC)
You're right of course, the old copies of files are unneccesary. I'll fix it up if I find the time for doing so. Apart from that I still can't tell why it won't compile; the people who got it to work told me they just followed the instructions in the Unix build readme file... --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 20:00, 27 December 2014 (UTC)
Several people compiled it?
I started again. I copied makedefs in utils, with this the executable gets compiled. Ignore the previous about the levels not compiling at all, i broke something it seams. However, it seams the level compiler doesn't recognize several traps and gives up (probably all the traps you added hint hint). I bet is one of the many files of the level compiler that you moved in src, when the unix makefile uses the old files in utils. Any ideas what they are? You must be able to see where is the problem now. It's a bit too complicated for me, especially with all the mess.
--Quantum Immortal (talk) 03:47, 28 December 2014 (UTC)
Argh! You're right, the lev_main.c file in /util should be changed. I'll add all the new trap types and try to remember any other lev_main.c changes, which will hopefully cause the compilation to no longer fail. Thanks a lot! --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 10:12, 2 January 2015 (UTC)
Okay, it's done; turns out both lev_main.c and makedefs.c had not been updated, but now they are. The util/lev_main.c was missing the new traps and also new room types, while the util/makedefs.c had a problem finding the offset of the fake Amulet of Yendor. Now all of those errors should be gone; thanks for your help, maybe the compilation will work now! ;) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 10:26, 2 January 2015 (UTC)
Ok it works. "welcome to SlashEM Extended! You are a neutral female curser Augurer. The moon is waxing tonight.". It was the obvious file... I thought i had tried that.... It needs some other changes.
In "../win/tty/termcap.c" i had to change line 962 to this "extern char *tparm(NCURSES_CONST char *, ...);"
In "Makefile.src" i had to use "WINTTYLIB = -lncurses" instead.
In install.unx it should say that you need "libncurses5-dev bison flex" for ubuntu.
In include/config.h comment out lines 230 231 and add:

# define COMPRESS "/bin/gzip" */ /* FSF gzip compression */ # define COMPRESS_EXTENSION ".gz" */ /* normal gzip extension */

You should change the name of the game in the makefiles.
You should use some revision control system. The source will cease to be such a mess and i would have send my changes directly. You will attract more help this way too.
Some one is making a package for it? If you want i'll make one.
--Quantum Immortal (talk) 18:33, 2 January 2015 (UTC)
Can you get a .tgz of it up somewhere? If you want, I have a webserver and you could email it to me (elijah@<> where <>=shalott.net). In any case, the slightly edited source that compiles under unix SHOULD be distributed.
--Elronndl (talk) 12:47, 5 Feb 2015
Well, if you want, you may gladly make a Github package out of it, but please use the updated source code that I uploaded today (version v92). Nice to see you successfully managed to compile the game! --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 12:30, 8 January 2015 (UTC)

It doesn't compile again. It doesn't recognise the traps "alignment" and "stairs". Killing Gray Newt with wand of digging causes error message.

This message seems to stop gray newt spawning

Uhh... yeah, that's definitely a bug. It's caused by the low amount of hit points that a gray newt usually has, and the wand of digging reduces it below 1. This will be fixed in a future version. Thanks! --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 12:27, 8 January 2015 (UTC)
Thanks! Oh, and where can I find a version for linux. I've heard someone has got it to work. Have they uploaded it? And how do I do it, as I know nothing about code.
Well unfortunately I don't have a link to a linux version, but I have updated the source code as well as the Unix compile readme. It's the file "install.unx" in the sys/unix folder (several people apparently managed to compile the game that way, but you'll obviously need a compiler to do it). Too bad I don't have a Unix system so I can't just compile it myself and upload it, but for the time being, the game should also run under Linux with the "Wine" emulator-like program. Oh, and by the way, the Windows binary has been updated again; the gray newt bug should no longer exist now. Thanks for pointing it out! :) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 07:45, 9 January 2015 (UTC)

Revision control

pffff... O_o

Install this http://tortoisehg.bitbucket.org/

A very fast introduction: file > new repository (select your working directory) click on "Default working directory" (it's the current revision) On the second menu bar, with "commit" on the far right, check "check all files" type some comment on the empty window bellow the second menu bar. Then click commit This will add all the files in your working directory. edit a file with an external editor. The window of the lower right, is not an editor, it only displays changes. then you need to click "refresh file list", it appears as a hove over text over the circular arrow on the bar that has "commit" on its far right. type some comment on the empty window bellow the second menu bar. Then click commit You don't like a current revision? click on the revision you like in the history and select "backout" You want to revert only one file? Click on the revision you are interested. Then right click on the file that you want to revert, then "Revert to revision". This is like an edit, that you haven't committed yet. For more, read the manual http://tortoisehg.bitbucket.org/manual/1.1/index.html .--Quantum Immortal (talk) 14:34, 14 January 2015 (UTC)

Okay, I'll take a look at it as soon as the next version of Slash'EM Extended is ready. It might take some time until then, though. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 11:32, 15 January 2015 (UTC)
Follow the instructions above and you'll be using it in less then an hour. Message me back if you can't make it work.--Quantum Immortal (talk) 13:44, 16 January 2015 (UTC)
Uhh... that's complicated. So I got my repository now, but how can I make it available for public? Isn't that the point of using a repository program at all, so that other people can easily track changes etc. and submit patches or whatever? You know, kind of like the Github repositories for Unnethack, dnethack and other Nethack forks? --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 08:54, 19 January 2015 (UTC)
One thing at a time. Even if you are alone, it's beater to use that then having "kopie von blablabla" all over the place. You have an organized history of all your changes, if you regret a change, you can easily revert it. If there is a bug, you can easily revert back and to see when it appears, etc etc etc ... So definitely you should use a revision control system. You say you have no time, the public repository is an extra layer of complexity, just learn how to actually use it on your own for now. Just use it on your own and then simply upload the whole folder is already an improvement. Homework: download the source of slashem and make a repository, then copy in the folder all the slashem extended files (not the slashem extended repository, otherwise the repository config files will overwrite the slashem repository files), so that it over write slashem stuff, commit and dada, you can quickly see all the changes you made. From now on, you'll work on that repository. Upload that, and i'll bother with the public repository. If you don't do it ... you'll get a C- and a kitten will die B[ .--Quantum Immortal (talk) 20:22, 19 January 2015 (UTC)
Well, on my external hard drive I have chronological backups of my source code so I can always revert to previous versions if I want to, and it's working for me... I'll try out your suggestion to see the changes compared to SLASH'EM, though. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 07:06, 20 January 2015 (UTC)
You have 95 zip archives O_O??? I think a kitten just died.--Quantum Immortal (talk) 06:33, 21 January 2015 (UTC)
The best, would be to add all your previous backups. Start with slashem you stated with, and then add all your backups, so that you have a complete history of what you did. If you have ~90 backup, the least painful way, would be to write a script. You copy the folder in the repository folder, then, from within the repository directory, use the command "hg add myfile.txt" to add a file, it can use wild cards, and i think if it recognize a folder, it adds everything in it. This command is the equivalent to synchronize in the GUI. Then use the command "hg commit -m 'your comment'". Don't forget, a commit after every time you make an add. Make sure you didn't do any errors, otherwise later you'll have to dig in the manual for advanced commands to modify the history. Then register here https://bitbucket.org/ , create an empty public MERCURIAL repository. You'll see an URL similar to this https://Amy@bitbucket.org/Amy/Slashem_extended .Then in tortoisehg click push, it will complain and a field will appear on the second menu bar (the one with commit on the far right), copy the URL there and save. Then you can push and pull etc.... --Quantum Immortal (talk) 21:13, 23 January 2015 (UTC)
Well, as you have noticed, I currently don't have a lot of time and so I can't fiddle with TortoiseHG all the time (yes, there are a lot of other things I have to do in real life - I'm kind of busy at the moment), but I've seen you are setting up a repository at Sourceforge. So, since you're probably quite adept at using and managing repositories, how about a deal: you do the repository stuff by overwriting the SLASH'EM 0.0.7E7F2 source code with my current source code (downloadable) and committing that to Sourceforge, and I keep working on the actual code, notifying you whenever a new version is released? Call me lazy, but as I said, I'm kind of a busy woman and my PC at home doesn't have internet access so I can't upload stuff whenever I want. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 07:16, 27 January 2015 (UTC)
Time is money :P .Sourceforge doesn't allow deleting repositories, and other sleazy practices, that's a bad omen about were that site is going. I didn't created one my self, because i think it would be beater to include the whole history, you are the only one that has it. It will be a pain in the ass to figure the advanced commands necessary to modify the history after the fact(it can be done however). A repository is also meant to work with people that can't connect all the time. Also, the repository will be much smaller in size, then a copy of every previous version, a further reason why your method isn't very good with the internet. Can you send me all the past archives you have( a full library), i'll try to make a repo out of them. If it's a sloppy mess (and i'm sure it is) include instructions in what is what.--Quantum Immortal (talk) 00:39, 28 January 2015 (UTC)

Well, the amount of past archives is way too big and they often don't really differ except for a few things... Here's a zip archive with a good selection of old versions plus the current version: https://app.box.com/s/o4wg6cqb3w95losd4imfk8go98tyqfyv - it should be possible to build a "history timeline" of this, but if it's not enough, I can upload another archive with some "in-between versions" next Monday. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 06:49, 6 February 2015 (UTC)

Just noticed this response and the git repo. I thought you had me hanged outside to dry. I guess some one did what i suggested. Bheee :P, mercurial is easier on beginners i think, especially tortoise.--Quantum Immortal (talk) 19:22, 13 February 2015 (UTC)
Uhh... well, sorry about that, I tried with both TortoiseHG and Github, and personally I think Github is way easier to use. But at least the fork is under version control now. ;) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 07:15, 16 February 2015 (UTC)

Recieved an error while playing

So, I was playing as an Acid Mage doppleganger, and I was stuck in a wall [had polymorphed into an xorn recently to escape some people.] I attempted to polymorph back into an xorn, but failed and polymorphed into a shock ant. My gloves and weapon fell to the floor, and then this error happened:

0.95.7E7F2 20150201: impossible Unknown type of gloves (548) 0.95.7E7F2 20150201: panic extract_nobj: object lost

--AceSevenFive (talk) 14:17, 1 February 2015 (UTC)

Huh... weird, there was another report of exactly the same crash some time ago but so far I can't seem to reproduce it?! There should be an emergency save created that you can use to continue playing (remove the .e extension so the game can load it), but of course that bug shouldn't be there at all. I've never seen the character drop their gloves on polymorphing... However, one of my characters once had an item titled "2 pairs of gloves of power" or something like that, maybe that's related? Can you remember what pair of gloves you've been wearing? Maybe it's one of the new kinds (gauntlets of steel?) and I somehow forgot to code them correctly. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 06:58, 2 February 2015 (UTC)
Found it! This long-standing bug was caused by me being stupid (argh)... the game was trying to attach a corpse timeout to a pair of gloves when it should have been attached to a corpse, so the gloves vanished after a while and then some other function tried to access them but couldn't find the pointer since it didn't exist anymore, hence the crash! You may want to re-download the binary now, where this bug doesn't exist any longer. However, old savegame and bones files won't be compatible. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 11:24, 8 February 2015 (UTC)

Is this a bug or not? "You feel here an invisible invisible badguy corpse."

I am new to Slash'EM extended (just realized that I could play it on ADE) and I just killed something invisible and now when I walk over it is says: "You feel here an invisible invisible badguy corpse." Two things. One: are there supposed to be two "invisible"s, but two, even if so, how should a character be able to KNOW if it's original form was invisible?

209.151.236.12 20:08, 5 February 2015 (UTC)Elronnd

This isn't really a bug but a quirk of the parser; the monster's name is "invisible badguy", but the game always adds "invisible" if a monster actually is invisible. Since invisible monsters always leave invisible corpses if their invisibility was innate or gained by a potion, the player needs to "feel the square" it is on to find it, unless they have see invisible. By the way, actually eating the invisible badguy corpse is like eating a stalker corpse, so if you are invisible to begin with, eating it will grant you permanent invisibility and see invisible. :-) Thanks for your interest in the variant! --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 06:54, 6 February 2015 (UTC)

The ant threw a potion?

I just had an ant throw a potion at me: "The ant hurls an orange potion {1}!", which seems a little bit contreversial. Bug? Maybe the ant CAN throw a potion because it only weighs 1? Aside from being thrown by an ant, the game just behaved normally as if a monster had thrown a potion of stun at me. Just thought I'd bring your attention to this.

209.151.236.12 22:14, 5 February 2015 (UTC)Elronnd

Controversial, yes, but not a bug: (almost) all monsters are capable of using items (potions, scrolls, wands etc.) now. There was a report about dogs zapping wands of lightning somewhere, too, but that's intended; part of my design strategy is to make all monsters potentially dangerous, so if that lichen randomly spawns with a wand of death, it will probably use it on you. :) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 06:58, 6 February 2015 (UTC)
Wait, so there actually is an effing server allowing you to play Slash'EM Extended? YEAH! :D I always wanted such a server to exist - that's great! Currently I'm watching your very character (dwarven valkyrie) who encountered the ant throwing that potion at you; I'm excited to see how far you can take her. ;) Do you know if the Acehack team is regularly updating the variants hosted at their server? --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 09:24, 6 February 2015 (UTC)

Seeing through a door?

As far as I know, my current character does not have telepathy (a dwarven valkyrie), but as you can see in these two screenshots, the game seems to be behaving as if I am wearing a helm or amulet of telepathy (I can see the naga and kobold, but the mold has no brain). I don't have much expirience with Slash'EM extended, so I'm not sure if this is a bug or not, but I just thought I'd bring it to your attention.

209.151.236.12 19:49, 6 February 2015 (UTC)Elronnd

Well, the blue dot-like thingies are water squares, which don't block vision. If the naga were on the square the mold is on, you probably wouldn't see it while the door is closed. In vanilla there were no underground rivers like this, but Slash'EM Extended sometimes has them; I was looking at some of your ttyrecs and noticed you were having trouble crossing them. One way to get past the water is to find a pick-axe or other digging implement (e.g. by doing the Gnomish Mines as soon as they are found), but if the rivers appear too early in the game, swimming (like you did) might actually be the only way. Oh, and one more thing: the "enemy trooper" monster is best handled by letting it come to you so they don't get the first move, otherwise you're pushed willy-nilly through the area. Enemy troopers can be quite dangerous if they line up for a shot, and later on you will meet infanrymen, GI troopers and eventually even heavy weapon dudes (in ascending order of difficulty) which behave like enemy troopers but those will do much more damage per round, so it pays off to find a tactic that works well against them. Anyway, good luck with your adventures, and if anything comes up, feel free to message me! :-) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 20:47, 6 February 2015 (UTC)

"FASTLY JUMP TO ENEMIES WITH INVISIBLES FIRSTLY"

This is the second time it's happened: I go to the mines, come up to a giant spider, the giant spider reads a scroll named "FASTLY JUMP TO ENEMIES WITH INVISIBLES FIRSTLY" and then it goes back to the dgamelaunch menu and the game is crashed. Please fix this!!

209.151.236.12 21:31, 6 February 2015 (UTC)Elronnd

Argh! Too bad I don't know what that scroll would even do; maybe it's a scroll of warping or root password detection or something like that? I'll have to look into it; maybe I can reproduce the bug. I'll have a look at all the scrolls that can be used by monsters. Do you know if the giant spider is injured? Because if it isn't, the scroll is probably one used for attacking, e.g. a scroll of fire. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 21:46, 6 February 2015 (UTC)
Maybe if I get that far, I'll try to wish for one, or at least to make it so the spider doesn't read it. Maybe next time I'll zap sleep at him or something and try to identify it.

209.151.236.12 21:59, 6 February 2015 (UTC)Elronnd

Weird, I'm testing all the scroll types, including cursed ones, but so far I can't reproduce it; maybe the problem is Unix specific (I'm using my offline Windows binary for wizard mode testing)? Sorry about the bug, but currently I can't really pinpoint the core of the problem... My advice: save your game just before you reach that spider, so if it crashes again, you won't be thrown back too far. I'll do some more analysis tomorrow. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 22:02, 6 February 2015 (UTC)
Well, I'm not sure what happened, but (still same game) I had a different monster at a later point read a scroll by that name, and it appears to be teleport in this game. Maybe the it had something to do with where the spider ended up? Maybe you need to fix your random number generator because it was cursed and tried to take the spider to level 0? In any case, it doesn't seem to affect much at this point. My other guess is that it encountered a problem when trying to add it to my discoveries list.

209.151.236.12 22:37, 6 February 2015 (UTC)Elronnd

Okay, so at least now we know that something's bugged about the scroll of teleportation. Glad that gnome lord didn't crash the game too! I'll probably spend quite some time testing, and maybe I can reproduce it. I'll have a look at the ttyrecs to see where exactly the spider was in each case. Let's hope that this is a rare crash and doesn't happen to you again; it seems your valkyrie is growing quite strong! :-) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 22:42, 6 February 2015 (UTC)
Finally removed that annoying crash bug! It took over an hour to track down the exact cause, but monsters with scrolls of teleportation should no longer crash the game now. It's up to the Acehack maintainers to update the server version (I contacted them via e-mail to notify them of the update; binaries and source code have been updated) but as soon as it's done, the game should be much more enjoyable. Thanks for helping me find out about the bug, I'm sure that some weird crashes I've been having lately were in fact related to this error and now it's finally fixed! :-)
On a side note, the exact reason was this: monsters with scrolls of teleportation use a "goto:mon_tele" call that points to a section of the code for wands of teleportation, which checks the wand's enchantment value among other things. Now if the monster was using a scroll, the game would try to get the enchantment value of the scroll even though the scroll doesn't exist any longer (since the monster read it, causing it to disappear), resulting in a call to a nonexistant pointer, hence the game crashed with a segfault. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 10:30, 7 February 2015 (UTC)

Some bug.

I typed "z" and then "?" and one of my wands was on "#", and one of my scrolls was also on "#", so at this point, it showed all the wands I could zap, and also a scroll that had the same inventory letter as a wand. I sort of want to see what happens if I type "#" at this point, but the wand is an unpaid wand of wishing (pricy) and I'm not sure if the game is smart enough to try to zap the scroll, but in any case, this should be fixed.

——209.151.236.12 16:32, 7 February 2015 (UTC)Elronnd

This is a side effect of having more than 52 items in your inventory (which isn't possible in other variants). It's a bit quirky, but by using the adjust command you can shuffle those #'s around; of course it would be better if every item had its own inventory slot/letter but currently this is the best I can do. The other "solution" would be removing the ability to have more than 52 items in open inventory... but I kind of like that feature, even though the interface can be a bit annoying sometimes. ;) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 16:35, 7 February 2015 (UTC)
How about using other letters? Eg %^}`|~... . I mean some of them would be a little bit confusing (^&!), but on the whole, hashes aren't the only option.

209.151.236.12 16:40, 7 February 2015 (UTC)Elronnd

That would be a pain to code, and some menus actually use many of those (e.g. typing % might select all comestibles). Also, even with more symbols there would be limits. On the other hand, one of the current system's benefits is that you can take out everything from your sack, read a blessed scroll of identify and if you get lucky, all those pages of items are identified at once.
As far as your wand of wishing is concerned; if you try to zap a scroll, nothing will happen. As I said, if you specifically want to zap the wand of wishing, it's probably a good idea to adjust it to an actual letter first. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 16:44, 7 February 2015 (UTC)
Well, I might WANT to zap my wand now, although on something stupid: I just read a random scroll that one of the cops dropped (I accidentally stole the wand) and it took me to level forty, what'sthe best thing to do? I seems like a real waste to wish for a ring of teleport control, but...

209.151.236.12 16:48, 7 February 2015 (UTC)Elronnd

OMG... I saw you ending up down there; that was a scroll of warping. Might as well wish for "3 blessed scroll of warping" or "3 blessed scroll of tele level" and read those, hoping to get back to shallow dungeon levels. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 16:50, 7 February 2015 (UTC)

Bug [getting blasted by artifacts crashes the game]

I was a doppleganger chaotic female Rogue, and I found a scroll of wishing. I wished for the Master Key of Thievery, tried to pick it up, got blasted, and then the game crashed. --AceSevenFive (talk) 21:37, 9 February 2015 (UTC)

Huh... weird, it should be impossible to wish for that as a rogue, since it's your own quest artifact! If I try it in wizard/explore mode I don't get blasted, and the game lets me pick it up with no problems... --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 06:52, 10 February 2015 (UTC)
On a side note, are you playing an up-to-date offline version? About two days ago I updated the binaries and source code with some critical bug fixes that should tone down random crashes; unfortunately it seems at least one crash bug is still there, but with the current version it hopefully crashes a lot less often. So if the version you're playing (can be tested by pressing V in-game) is older, it might be a good idea to update (savegame and bones files won't be compatible though). The Acehack server version received a similar update on Feb 8th, too. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 07:02, 10 February 2015 (UTC)

Retried with v98, went in wizard mode as a wizard, tried to wish for the Master Key of Thievery, game crashed when I got blasted. --AceSevenFive (talk) 14:16, 14 February 2015 (UTC)

Found out why it was crashing - all artifacts with index numbers greater than 127 weren't defined correctly! The binary has been fixed, so you may want to update now (breaks saves and bones files again); the bug should no longer exist. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 07:17, 16 February 2015 (UTC)

Blasted by coaligned artifact in wizard mode?

I am on my library's computer, and I accidentally hacked it (yeah, that's how weak these windows computers are), and so I ended up with working Slash'EM Extended. So I started up a game in wizard mode, and Ctrl-Wed for “blessed greased fixed +20 Excalibur” and it blasted me. I looked in my discoveries to make sure you didn't change it's alignment, but no, it was still lawful. 198.187.215.104 19:26, 17 February 2015 (UTC)Elronnd

Hmm. Maybe your character isn't a knight? For some reason (dunno why), artilist.h shows it to be a knight artifact, so it probably blasts everyone else. But if you're a lawful knight and it still blasts you then it's probably a bug. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 12:27, 18 February 2015 (UTC)
This was not a knight game. 209.151.236.12 15:35, 23 February 2015 (UTC)Elronnd

Trying to ";" a monster crashes the game?

I am playing on nethack.xd.cm, and as an angbander bully, when I encountered a U. Curious, I tried to find what it was (with ";") and the game crash-exited. I can do it on other monsters (and myself), however. Maybe you forgot to include an encyclopedia entry/pokedex entry for this monster? 209.151.235.14 21:03, 12 March 2015 (UTC)Elronnd

Well; for some reason the server version has been very crash-prone ever since we added livelog, and I can't reproduce those crashes on my local (offline, Windows) binary. The "pokedex entry" is actually created at run-time whenever you farlook a monster, but the U is probably one of the randomized (shambling horror type) monsters so their stats will be generated at game start. Maybe the server version somehow has a bug where they aren't initialized correctly? --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 06:49, 13 March 2015 (UTC)

gray ooze reffered to as "it"

I am playing on the server, and started pounding a gray ooze that was clearly visible (I could ";" it and everything), but when I actually hit it, it said "You hit it!" I am a chaotic angbander bully wielding an uncursed +1 bow.209.151.235.14 21:14, 12 March 2015 (UTC)Elronnd

Weird, can't reproduce that offline either... dunno why that happens, but maybe it has something to do with the bully's item-stealing attack? --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 06:54, 13 March 2015 (UTC)

Editing and compiling tips (Also a random bug)

Hello, I'm a big fan of Slash'Em Extended, and I was wondering how to go about editing everything! I have a ton of things I want to put in, namely a bunch of monsters from the Monster Hunter series, and add a few weres that I think could be pretty cool to come across.

I've been editing the files with Notepad++ for a while, but I'm not actually sure if that's the right way to go about things. I also can't figure out how to actually compile the thing, I have MinGW, and have installed nearly everything it can offer, but I'm getting this error: http://prntscr.com/6ilkxm

I'm wondering if it's just the version of MinGW. Do you have any ideas?

Either way, thank you very much!

As for that bug, I came upon a Rat Man that was named "%s Rat Man" that crashed the game after I killed it. ——SatoshiKura (talk) 09:00, 19 March 2015 (UTC)

Editing with np++ is arguably a good idea; however, if you edit the file monst.c it will be quite laggy due to the sheer size. The compiler bug is annoying - I got it too when I first tried to compile, but by creating the directory "C:\games\slam32d" I was able to fix it. It's weird that the compiler can't just create that directory if it doesn't exist...
About the crash bug: are you playing locally or on the acehack server, and which version (press v in-game to display the version number)? Chances are that if you're playing locally, you have encountered a rare bug where the game can't correctly handle a monster's inventory; did the %s Rat-Man use any items while it lived, e.g. scrolls of create monster, wands of make invisible etc.? The exact cause of this bug is still unknown but I hope to figure it out eventually.
Anyway, thanks for the feedback, and have fun modding! :) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 12:37, 19 March 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for the help! I think I did something very, very wrong, though.. http://prntscr.com/6iqcmv

The bug, I was playing locally. Pressing v ingame comes up with "Windows SlashEMExtended tty Version 1.0.4 - last build Sat Mar 07 15:33:08 2015." The Rat Man didn't use any items, from what I remember. --SatoshiKura (talk) 16:12, 19 March 2015 (UTC)

The error message seems to suggest that you edited objects.c, and item number 133 (which should be T_SHIRT) somehow became a pile of gold?! Anyway, diagnosing the crash bug won't be easy; do you still have the savegame file? If the %s Rat-Man has already spawned, it might be a good idea to backup that savegame so you can do some testing to find out whether killing it always crashes the game. Maybe it will also drop something on death that might give a clue as to what is going wrong... --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 06:48, 20 March 2015 (UTC)

Whoa... I know I didn't touch that file, only monst.c, mondata.c, and were.c.

In past attempts to compile, however, I did follow the instructions on the Compiling page on this wiki. The .bat file I used actually compiled the game, and trying to start it after selecting the usual starting stuff gave me the error from my last post. The .bat that came with Slash'EM Extended's source gives me this error: http://prntscr.com/6j0uxn

A compile I tried running while typing this up, using the .bat coding from the Compile page, also gave me this in the command line: http://prntscr.com/6j0wjo I'm not exactly sure what it means, or how to fix it. Trying to start the game ended up the same way as before. Would it help if I shared what I've edited?

As for the Rat Man, I'm already well beyond it, I was able to get rid of it with a Scroll of Genocide. If I come across it again, though, I'll be sure to see what can be done! --SatoshiKura (talk) 09:35, 20 March 2015 (UTC)

Oh. That compile.bat file assumes that MinGW be installed to a certain directory, and if it is not, it obviously won't find it :D... The other compiling error indicates that "rathalos" (wtf? this must be a monster added by you!) has flags with index numbers that are too large for their respective array; you may want to create a Github repository for your changes if you're planning to keep on modifying the game, so other coders can take a look at your changes and spot errors more easily. Or post the monst.c entry for "rathalos" here, maybe I can see what's wrong. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 10:59, 20 March 2015 (UTC)

I figured out what the problem was with Rathalos! I had an M2 thing alongside an M3 thing, haha. I threw Rathalos in when I was first making these, and I didn't really know what I was supposed to do. I figured it out as I was getting errors for other things that actually stopped the compile.

Rathalos is also one of the main monsters in the Monster Hunter series, and also one of my favorites! I just had to add him in. I do still get that error though. It doesn't always bring up $ object, I've seen a few others before, like ' in the most recent one. I'm going to see if a fresh extracted SEE works out right, and if it does, I'll just migrate stuff over.

I was also wondering, do you know how to make eggs hatch different things? I know the Winged Gargoyle eggs can hatch either a normal or winged gargoyle, but I'm not very sure how to go about doing that for some of my own. --SatoshiKura (talk) 05:02, 21 March 2015 (UTC)

EDIT:

A compile of a freshly extracted SEE came up with: http://prntscr.com/6je3v2 http://prntscr.com/6je3zw --SatoshiKura (talk) 05:24, 21 March 2015 (UTC)

About the eggs: function egg_type_from_parent in mon.c has special cases for (winged) gargoyles; if "force_ordinary" is set in that function, winged gargoyle eggs turn into gargoyle eggs. An example for randomized eggs might be adding this line:
if (mnum == PM_GRID_BUG && rn2(2)) mnum == PM_TRON_BUG
That would give grid bug eggs a 50% chance to hatch into tron bugs instead.
The error messages might be caused by a mismatch between slashem.exe and the nhshare/nhushare files; at least that's what was giving me the same error messages in the past. Did you make sure you have up-to-date versions of all of these files in the directory where you're running the game? Making changes in monst.c will (almost) always affect all three of them, and the game will choke over it if there's a mismatch. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 22:36, 21 March 2015 (UTC)

Yep! Everything's up to date, or should be. Those errors were from a compile with an untouched source. I wonder if the error is something from my end. --SatoshiKura (talk) 10:01, 22 March 2015 (UTC)

Cockatice Rocker problem

I decided to play a Cockatrice Rocker. I figured that since the Rocker class makes you lithovoric, it would the petrification of corpses I try to eat a non-issue. Turns out the game disagrees with my theory. --AvzinElkein (talk) 16:09, 23 March 2015 (UTC)

Hmm, interesting idea; I might devise a system that allows characters to gain some nutrition in that case. Thanks for the idea! --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 06:41, 24 March 2015 (UTC)
Did you test what I did out? That is, play a cockatrice rocker and try to eat a corpse. --AvzinElkein (talk) 15:55, 25 March 2015 (UTC)
Yes, it says "The food turns to stone" or "Ulch - that food was petrified!" As I said, I'll make some improvements to that system, so stay tuned for the next version. :) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 07:09, 26 March 2015 (UTC)
Does v109 fix the problem I mentioned here? --AvzinElkein (talk) 10:36, 9 April 2015 (UTC)
Kind of; a lithivore cockatrice character will be able to eat food more often, and get sensible messages when they can't. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 10:38, 9 April 2015 (UTC)

YANI

I just had this realy great YANI that's really in the spirit of Slash'EM Extended: Hallucinating player will sometimes think that they have more hp (not max-hp) then they actually have. Higher charisma will increase chances that they will think that they have higher hp. What do you think? --Elronnd (talk) 17:05, 3 April 2015 (UTC)Elronnd

Hmm, the implementation could be difficult. Also, shouldn't it be the other way around: lower charisma should make the effect more common, since it's a bad effect and charisma is next to impossible to raise, so it should actually be beneficial if it's higher?
I'll need to think about it a bit. Maybe I can find a way to implement it. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 19:54, 4 April 2015 (UTC)
Yes, but players with very high charisma may be so self-absorbed that they will fail to notice that they have low hp. Or maybe they will be so good looking that they won't see the hurts.--Elronnd (talk) 05:57, 9 April 2015 (UTC)Elronnd

Crash when falling into spiked pit

This applies to the server at https://nethack.xd.cm/. I had a gamer immunizer. I fell into a spiked pit and the game panic saved. It used version 1.0.9. By the way, thanks for all the changes you've made. I didn't have time to say respond earlier, but I'll look forward to seeing how you've implemented the ideas. --Bug sniper (talk) 04:56, 11 April 2015 (UTC)

On another note, I noticed your repository on github. If I want to post pull requests, should they be forked from the master, or from your most recently contributed branch? --Bug sniper (talk) 22:50, 12 April 2015 (UTC)
Well, the server version is very crash-prone for some reason ever since a certain update was introduced, which causes the game's internal lists to get corrupted as the game goes on. Seemingly random events will cause crashes, eventually rendering the game nearly unplayable and I can't fix it because the error can't be reproduced locally, even if I compile the game on a Lubuntu Unix system with exactly the same compile flags used for the server build! Since I'm not the server maintainer I can't very well fix the server version, and the server maintainer states it's my shitty code that's at fault while I'm certain it's some server-specific stuff that's out of my reach which causes the errors, so we're at a stalemate here. For the time being my advice would be playing locally where this "phantom crash bug" doesn't exist, even though it means forgoing other player's bones files and stuff (they rarely get saved anyway because the game also often crashes on the server when it's supposed to save bones, DUH!). About the github repo: most recently contributed branch would be the correct one. Thanks for the feedback! --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 08:13, 13 April 2015 (UTC)

Homicider?

It sounds like the race has no positive qualities at all; no random monsters and reduced HP/Pw gains... --AvzinElkein (talk) 20:37, 12 April 2015 (UTC)

The "no random monsters" part is the positive quality of this race. :D Of course it means less food and death drops so it's probably actually harder; the idea for that race was from deepy, and I tried to implement it in a fun way. But it's probably one of the harder races. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 08:05, 13 April 2015 (UTC)

Re: (User talk:ais523) Evil patch

There's no repository of any sort available for the Evil Variant. Although some small proportion of it has been coded, it's mostly just a set of ideas. (I think of it as somewhere I can send bad ideas to so that they can die without making their way into serious variants. Subsequently, other people started contributing ideas; I'm not sure any of those got implemented apart from the drawbridges that attack diagonally, and that was implemented with very sloppy code.) Ais523 (talk) 23:58, 17 April 2015 (UTC)

Ah okay, I see. My main hope was that the full-screen-sized Sokoban level would exist... ;) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 05:46, 20 April 2015 (UTC)
It doesn't, as far as I know, although that doesn't mean it'd be impossible to create one. One of the few things I did make was two Sokoban levels for the Evil Variant, though. They're online here, if you're interested in adding them. (Good luck solving them! They are both possible. I have forgotten the solutions, although I did manage to reconstruct the solution to one of the levels a while back.) Ais523 (talk) 22:55, 25 April 2015 (UTC)
Update, apparently a full-screen-sized Sokoban level (by Jonadab) does exist, I just didn't know about it up until now. (Although Jonadab says it's in Slash'EM Extended already, here's the link for posterity: [1]) Ais523 (talk) 22:55, 25 April 2015 (UTC)
Thanks! They're all in Slash'EM Extended already, but it's good to have the links; maybe other variant designers will want to add them to their variants someday. The "evil variant" Sokoban levels are very hard indeed but I'll try to solve them if they happen to come up while I play. ;) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 05:56, 27 April 2015 (UTC)
What is the Evil Variant? Elronnd(talk) 00:58, 18 April 2015 (UTC)
"Evil variant" is a hypothetical NetHack variant that incorporates the most evil ideas people had on IRC; I had hoped it would actually exist but it seems most of it is just purely hypothetical. However, Slash'EM Extended adds quite some evil patch ideas which I coded myself, even though that means they're not always exactly like the original proposals. ;) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 05:46, 20 April 2015 (UTC)

UNIX name

In ./sys/unix/Makefile.top line 20 .You have to give a unix name to the program, currently, it is still slashem, and conflicts with an installed slashem.--Quantum Immortal (talk) 08:18, 19 April 2015 (UTC)

Beh :P ... there's more. In the above file, line 45, the name of the directory. And in a second makefile ./sys/unix/Makefile.src line 423.--Quantum Immortal (talk) 17:43, 21 April 2015 (UTC)
Fixed. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 05:49, 23 April 2015 (UTC)

slex???? I had to look in the makefiles to see that... What name you are using in the windows version? (why i have the feeling it's still slashem B[). Rename both versions, with the same name, and not "slashem". "slashemextended" should be fine, it's the simplest and most intuitive. --Quantum Immortal (talk) 22:06, 11 June 2015 (UTC)

While I agree with you in principle, slex has been widely used in IRC and was used on the server when it was hosted there, so it makes intuitive sense to people who interacted with it there (such as our dear bluescreenofdeath).Elronnd(talk) 22:09, 11 June 2015 (UTC)

Cannot ride saddled horse

http://puu.sh/hqUxW/93c3922283.NetHack-saved-game

I've put a saddle on the nearby blue nightmare and rode it and left. Afterwards, when I try to ride the blue nightmare again, the game says that this blue nightmare is not saddled. When I try to put another saddle on it, the game says that it is not saddled.

The #version command shows version 1.0.8. --Bug sniper (talk) 01:30, 26 April 2015 (UTC)

I assume that the link is to a save file. In general, please do not provide save files unless they are specifically requested, as the odds that a member of a dev team (even worse, a single dev team member) has the same kind of setup as you are slim. Thanks! Elronnd(talk) 04:06, 26 April 2015 (UTC)
Seems to be a bug that sometimes happens if a saddle gets cursed. There are unfortunately very few ways to remove the bugged saddle from your steed. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 10:43, 8 May 2015 (UTC)

The dungeon collapses...

I was a Male Cockatrice Zyborg chained to an iron ball. I thought: "Hey im a metallivore!" I ate the iron ball. The iron ball turned to stone before I could eat it. The dungeon collapsed. --99.239.195.134 23:42, 26 April 2015 (UTC)Some Guy

Whoops! I'll need to look into that, but in the meantime, can you restore your game? There should be an emergency savegame file created in your playground. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 05:58, 27 April 2015 (UTC)
Alright, this should be fixed now. If you're on version v115, updating the game won't break savefile compatibility, and the bug should be gone. :) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 06:54, 27 April 2015 (UTC)

Generalized ranged attack

You wanted me to tell you when this was finished:

It's the most recent three commits in this branch

--Chris (talk) 16:57, 8 May 2015 (UTC)

Yay! Thanks a lot, I'll implement it in Slash'EM Extended as soon as I'm ready to add monsters that use it. :) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 17:47, 8 May 2015 (UTC)

An odd query!

What is the Pokemon's quest artifact? --AvzinElkein (talk) 03:13, 18 May 2015 (UTC)

"Gauntlets of Illusion" - a pair of gauntlets of dexterity that grants hallucination resistance and can be invoked for invisibility. Neutral for wishing purposes. Not too special I know; I'm not that good at thinking up good artifacts... --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 04:59, 18 May 2015 (UTC)
Also, drinking potions of oil as a clockwork automaton still abuses Wisdom for some reason! I say this since I got that "that was smooth" message. --AvzinElkein (talk) 22:39, 24 May 2015 (UTC)
Huh. Yeah, I should fix that... --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 05:43, 26 May 2015 (UTC)
What should the intended message for drinking potions of oil as a clockwork automaton be then? --AvzinElkein (talk) 15:47, 30 May 2015 (UTC)
Hmm, didn't think of a message yet, but the next version update will fix the wisdom bug. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 09:26, 31 May 2015 (UTC)
How about “That was smooth!”? Elronnd(talk) 16:51, 31 May 2015 (UTC)

YANI

Have you considered making class versions of the other races? For ideas, you could check out my pages for the racial quests, accessible from my user page. --Kahran042 (talk) 20:56, 21 May 2015 (UTC)

At least dwarf and gnome are actually planned to be added at some point, but I can't tell when that will be. Elf already exists as the "Elph" role, and Lycanthrope exists as the "Lunatic" role (but that quest is a bit different).
Oh btw, thanks a lot for updating the Slash'EM Extended monster chart on the wiki! :-) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 05:51, 22 May 2015 (UTC)
You're welcome! :) --Kahran042 (talk) 19:20, 23 May 2015 (UTC)

Wands of remove curse don't uncurse rings

I was wandering if wands of remove curse are supposed to remove curses from rings. I was using version 115. On the first zap, it removed a loadstone. On the second zap, my cursed boots were uncursed. Afterwards, nothing seems to have happened, even though I still got the message that I felt that someone was helping me. --Bug sniper (talk) 05:33, 25 May 2015 (UTC)

Also, I noticed that starting a game with the name "lostsoul" or "Lostsoul" doesn't cause the game to start near medusa's level anymore. Did that feature get removed? --Bug sniper (talk) 02:00, 26 May 2015 (UTC)
Wands of remove curse do work; every cursed item in your inventory has a random chance to get uncursed, so you may have to zap the wand repeatedly. It helps to take out all cursed items from your box beforehand that you want to be uncursed, increasing the chance that the wand does uncurse something at all. ;)
If you want to play in lost soul mode, you'll now have to add this to your defaults.nh or other configuration file: OPTIONS=lostsoul (other possibilities are blindfox, dudley, gehenna, hippie, iwbtg and uberlostsoul; you can now have several of them active at once too, which wasn't possible before, e.g. OPTIONS=lostsoul, gehenna, hippie :D). --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 05:42, 26 May 2015 (UTC)

Polymorphing into santa claus and going downstairs on Dlvl 1 crashes game

I found a wand of polymorph, and, after a few tries polymorphed into santa claus. I had no idea that monster existed. I went down the stairs and the last things i saw were "Oops. -more-" I can't replicate it. I was using a school computer that resets the files everytime the computer restarts, so i lost the emergency save. I can't remember the race, but I do remember the role: Zyborg. Also my paniclog does not have anything weird; only from when i played as a missingno. character, and nothing on 2015/04/05

--Rygold (talk) 19:56, 4 June 2015 (UTC)

Damn... that's not supposed to happen. Can you check the "paniclog" file? Maybe it has some further information about the crash. Also, do you remember the role/race combo you were playing at, or if there was anything weird to be seen on dlvl1?
Also, there may be a .e "emergency savegame file" in your playground folder; you might be able to restore your game by removing the .e extension. Making a backup of it is advised too so you can test whether the bug always happens. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 16:29, 5 June 2015 (UTC)

Nighthorn turn to dust in SLASHTHEM

Well, nighthorn turn to dust in SLASHTHEM. Probably it turns to dust here too. That's intended???--Quantum Immortal (talk) 02:25, 11 June 2015 (UTC)

Whoops! Well, intended yes, but it's supposed to have a considerably lower risk of vaporizing compared to regular unihorns. I'll think of a way to fix it. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 05:57, 11 June 2015 (UTC)

Normal software release

This is how normal people make software B[ . Normally, you have the development branch, where you put new ideas and experiments. There is a prerelease branch, where you DON'T add any new features, only bug fixing. When the prerelease was cleaned of the serious bugs and is deemed usable, then it becomes a stable version. You NEVER add new features in a prerelease or stable a version, you only remove bugs. Later, you take a copy of the development branch to become the new prerelease. When the prerelease become the new version, you stop fixing bugs for the old version.... And the cycle continues... Normal users use, the latest stable version, and see rarely serious bugs. More adventurous users can try the prerelease and report bugs.

Currently Slashem extended is a big buggy sloppy mess because you keep adding new features in a single branch. There is also a convention with version numbers, that you completely messed up too...

So, what you should do, is make a prerelease.--Quantum Immortal (talk) 04:45, 20 June 2015 (UTC)

Yes. This. If you do this, then you can have all the changes you want and people will be more likely to play your variant. Aside from which, that's just good coding practice (by "practice", I mean not "I'm practicing for the real thing", but "this is a good general practice"). Elronnd(talk) 04:49, 20 June 2015 (UTC)
To help you in this regard, it may be useful to have milestone goal lists for the milestone releases that have their feature set fairly complete and well-debugged. I'd encourage you to continue releasing intermittent releases that you can announce by commit message when the game can be compiled. --Bug sniper (talk) 03:36, 27 June 2015 (UTC)

Breaking wand of amnesia creates errors.

As it says. Breaking a wand of amnesia on version v121 by applying it creates these messages:

What an interesting effect (1302) Object 1302 used?

——Rygold (talk) 20:05, 10 July 2015 (UTC)

Huh. I'll need to look into the wand-breaking function again, that one is still a mess... Maybe I can find the cause of this error. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 08:41, 12 July 2015 (UTC)

Starting as a non-human (save orc and barbarian) and eating a human corpse gives cannibalism

(tested with grid bug and cockatrice archeologist) Wished for human corpse, ate it, was a cannibal apparently.

--Rygold (talk) 16:33, 28 July 2015 (UTC)

This is intentional for some races, but not for others; the ones you tested clearly should be able to eat humans without penalty, so I'll add that to my to-do list. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 05:43, 29 July 2015 (UTC)
The binary has been updated (but it breaks saves/bones); now, creature races should just "feel evil and fiendish!" instead. This incurs a slight alignment penalty for lawfuls but unlike a luck penalty and intrinsic aggravate monster, this can easily be fixed by just killing more monsters. Have fun! :-) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 19:32, 1 August 2015 (UTC)

Visual bug in v151

Hi. Your work with SLASH'EM Extended is awesome so I'm really sad that I have to report bug. It's about visuals.

I encountered 'weird room' filled by water and lava tiles. In this room character's tiles wasn't 'cleared' from the map (it's about '@' and pet, not tested on monsters). When I left this room, newly explored corridors was... hm, 'weird' ;) - there was lack of '#'walls and character's tiles (again - my and my pet) 'remains' on room entrances. screenshot.

After save/load whole level looks like these corridors. So, floor was displayed as should be, but other symbols (stairs, pools, etc.) wasn't displayed (so these was blank, black spaces). Still no walls. Unfortunately I didn't do screenshot. After another save/load everything looks good.

I can provide save file.

Best --VedVid (talk) 00:19, 16 December 2015 (UTC)

Hi there, and thanks for playing! I hope you like the game. :) What you reported might look like a bug but it's actually a feature; SPOILER ALERT so if you want to figure things out for yourself then don't read on: The weird-looking room is often generated with traps that don't display a message and won't reveal themselves when triggered, and they can cause various temporary interface screws. Trap_(Slash'EM Extended) shows a listing of new traps if you're interested, though that is definitely spoiler material. Anyway, after a while the visual "bug" effect will time out so everything looks normal again. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 06:52, 16 December 2015 (UTC)

Dying while indentifying + resurrection

So, I'm using bitbucket, not github, so let me report bugs in that way.

I was reading indetify scroll (I don't know it's B/U/C status) when message 'You fall below the bottom of the page! You die..." showed and later "Do you want your possessions identified? <letters> [more]" appeared. After pressing [Enter] key, identification proceed as should and my character is still alive. A bit strange.

--VedVid (talk) 22:07, 16 December 2015 (UTC)

This is sort of an in-joke based on the TVTropes site for NetHack: a cursed scroll of identify will always give that fake DYWYPI message. It can probably make the player jump out of their seat, but the character doesn't actually die. ;) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 06:59, 17 December 2015 (UTC)
Another "it's feature, not bug", shame on me :( --VedVid (talk) 18:00, 17 December 2015 (UTC)

Fighter class

I noticed that you recently added the JNetHack Fighter class, so I thought you might be interested in my attempt at translating it. --Kahran042 (talk) 13:39, 17 December 2015 (UTC)

Sure! There's lots of other stuff from Silly JNetHack and FHS that was not translated, including the Fencer/Medium/Stand User/Sexymate quests and the messages given from eating certain kinds of food, so it's good to have at least one of the quests translated. Thanks a lot! :-) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 13:46, 17 December 2015 (UTC)

Drow changes

Can drow now longer inflict sleep by barehanding?

They're supposed to be able to do so; however, it's not guaranteed to happen. Also, the monster's magic resistance can prevent the sleep effect from being applied, so you may have to hit the monster many times to put it to sleep. It should still happen about 50% of the time if the monster has zero magic resistance though. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 11:39, 18 January 2016 (UTC)

It is possible to evade death by genocide as an ungenomold

So, I found an interesting bug where it is possible to evade death by genocide as an ungenomold.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Die.

2. Close the game when it asks if you wish to continue in explore mode.

3. When you reload the game, you'll get the hang up penalty, but you will remain an ungenomold, despite them having been genocided.

Also, could you provide a guide to compiling Slash'EM Extended on Windows?

--AceSevenFive (talk) 01:27, 31 March 2016 (UTC)

Eek! Now that's a fat bug if you ask me... I guess that in order to fix this, I need to add a variable that tracks whether the character should be alive, which is set to 0 at the explore mode prompt, and if the game is restored with it set to 0, the player just dies immediately. Compiling on Windows actually works like compiling Vanilla I think, but I'll check that too. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 05:41, 31 March 2016 (UTC)

Updated Erdrick and DQ Slime quests

I don't mean to be a pest, but I have pretty much completed my updates to the Erdrick and User:Kahran042/YANI/DQ Slime quests, and would really like to see the new versions added to Slash'EM Extended. Again, I apologize if this is inconvenient for you, but I really do think that the new versions are better than the old ones currently in the variant. --Kahran042 (talk) 19:28, 10 April 2016 (UTC)

Hmm... The only major changes that I see, are that you replaced the DQ Slime locate and Erdrick quest goal level with different ones; why are the original ones not good? Also, I updated DQ Slimes so they get random skills unlocked as they level up; they were just too unplayable with no skills at all. I'll see what I will do about the quests. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 08:38, 11 April 2016 (UTC)
Because they were pretty messy and not quite as accurate to the areas they were based on, and the DQ Slime one wasn't even village-like, despite being "the VILLAGE of Humbleton". I also replaced the Erdrick home level, and there's now proper quest text based on the actual DQ games. But thanks for seeing what to do about the quests. And I'm glad that you had an idea about what to do with the DQ Slime skills, since I didn't, so thanks for that, too. --Kahran042 (talk) 19:04, 11 April 2016 (UTC)
Oh, sorry, completely forgot about the quest text. That will definitely get updated in version v166. About the level changes, hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm... what I might do, is to move the old (but in my opinion well-designed) levels to "fill" levels, like the Isle of Glass in the DQ Slime quest, so I can have both those and the new ones you made. IMHO the standard rooms-and-corridors filler levels are more or less boring anyway, and making the quests a little dull (especially since so many quests use them as filler), so if I replace at least some of them with nice-looking levels, it should be more fun. Does that sound good? :) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 05:56, 12 April 2016 (UTC)
Sounds good to me. Thanks! :) --Kahran042 (talk) 13:37, 12 April 2016 (UTC)
Sorry for bothering you, but when can I expect to see my modified DQ Slime and Erdrick levels implemented? --Kahran042 (talk) 02:17, 27 July 2017 (UTC)
I'm not sure when I'll get around to it, there's still so much other stuff on my to-do list. But I haven't forgotten about them, and hopefully one day they'll make it into the game! :) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 05:41, 27 July 2017 (UTC)
That's good to know. Thanks! :) --Kahran042 (talk) 04:22, 29 July 2017 (UTC)
I recently created a GitHub account, so would you mind if I added my changes myself? --Kahran042 (talk) 14:15, 18 April 2020 (UTC)
Well I guess you could make a pull request or something, I can't promise that I'll actually pull it though. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 17:05, 18 April 2020 (UTC)
All right. Just thought I'd ask. --Kahran042 (talk) 03:30, 19 April 2020 (UTC)
I'm still not quite sure of how to make a pull request, but I did make a branch with my changes to the relevant files. Hopefully it'll help. --Kahran042 (talk) 19:43, 19 April 2020 (UTC)
Ah, that's great, you made .des files for them :) This makes it much easier for me to apply the changes. I'll probably try to get it done as soon as I get home today. Thanks! --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 08:45, 20 April 2020 (UTC)
You're welcome, and thank you.--Kahran042 (talk) 09:29, 20 April 2020 (UTC)
Done. Feel free to check it out on github :) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 16:15, 20 April 2020 (UTC)
I just checked it out, and I liked what I saw, especially your new maledictions for the DQ Slime quest. Mostly, I'm glad that my babies are finally growing in your hands.--Kahran042 (talk) 03:27, 21 April 2020 (UTC)

Role/Race Selection Menu

There are just way too many roles and races in SLASHEM Extended for a first time player (or even a veteran Nethack/SLASHEM player) to choose from. Is it possible to perhaps streamline things a bit, such as with a series of sub-menus?

For example, perhaps you could structure the Role Selection menu like this:

  • [a] Easy Roles
  • [b] Standard Roles
  • [c] Advanced Roles
  • [d] Challenge Roles

Where "Easy Roles" are roles meant for beginning players, "Standard Roles" are the roles from Vanilla Nethack and SLASHEM (as well of comparatively balanced roles), Advanced Roles are roles that are difficult to play due to having unusual game mechanics, and Challenge Roles are "Harder Than Hard" roles that only exist to be challenging.

It would also help if there was some in-game documentation on what all of the roles and races actually do. While I am aware that there are pages on this wiki about them, the least you could do is copy the text from those pages and add them to the official documentation. --Ed Robot (talk) 18:03, 15 August 2016 (UTC)

P.S. I'd love to see you find a way to include Gilgamesh from Fate/Stay Night in some capacity, perhaps as a Quest Nemesis for a weapon-conjuring "Tracer" Role. --Ed Robot (talk) 18:09, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
Probably going to add documentations, although I can't say when it will happen. There are still a lot of things on my to-do list for the next version... Also, I'm afraid the tracer role wouldn't really fit the general theme of my variant and be very hard to implement even if it was, though I might at least implement parts of it. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 06:18, 16 August 2016 (UTC)
Now that I think about it, the tracer role might fit into dnethack; maybe you should suggest it to Chris? --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 06:23, 16 August 2016 (UTC)

Box not working

Hi, i've been playing slashemextended for a long time, but this time i tried to get the latst version and BOX is not working. I think it may have something to do with your acount, since the .zip source code download link doesn't work either.

Weird, it's not working for me either unless I log in... apparently the download script fails for some reason? I've tested it with the source code zip and that one is not working either, but some of my other shared files on box.net are working! Seems I'll have to re-upload it and hope that it will make it work - thanks for reporting! --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 16:05, 6 November 2016 (UTC)
Doesn't work, I think it's a general bug with box.net. I'd need some other place to upload it too, then... --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 08:07, 7 November 2016 (UTC)
Since I don't seem to have a way to make it work again, I added the binary package for Windows directly to the github repository. Can you check whether downloading it from https://github.com/SLASHEM-Extended/SLASHEM-Extended/raw/master/slashemextended.zip works for you? :) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 10:49, 9 November 2016 (UTC)

Shopkeeper successfully fails to identify objects

I paid a tools shopkeeper for identification services on a potion. Sometimes, the shopkeeper says "Sorry. I guess it's not your lucky day." But this time, the shopkeeper instead said "Success! The potion resisted your identification attempt!" I don't think shopkeeper services should fail in that manner. This was for version 1.8.6.--Bug sniper (talk) 23:36, 26 February 2017 (UTC)

Weird wording, but not a bug - it is intentional that it can still fail. If it's "not your lucky day" then the item is not identified at all; if you get "success" but the item resists, it means that you don't have the base item type (e.g. potion of acid or whatever) identified, but may still learn BUC status, enchantment or other things if the selected type of identification includes it. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 08:00, 27 February 2017 (UTC)
I'd call that merely a partial success. That way, the message won't sound contradictory.
Also, if you want a full range of successfulness, you can make a natural 1 in 20 an epic fail in which the object is identified as something else, and the natural 20 give you an amnesia-proof hallucination-proof id. Because I feel like increasing the number of awesome ideas available to you. --Bug sniper (talk) 03:41, 1 March 2017 (UTC)

Extended: monster alignments and a contradiction

Hi Amy BSOD,
As you have seen I've begun to add a table field for alignment in Monster (Slash'Em Extended). I dedided it was necessary when I suffered an involuntary altar conversion b/c my neutral avatar sacrificed too many neutral corpses. Which monsters qualified as suitable aligned? Your direct link to the github monster.c source made it possible to look it up. Well the masses of entries will cost some time to complete that. The order of monsters in the wiki table is not the same as in the source file, so you always have to use the search function. If you see any gaps or mistakes please correct it just like you did.

By the way I noticed that there are no reliable rules for monsters being chaotic or lawful. I'd supposed that e.g. all were-creatures were chaotic. That would have clear logic rules. You'd guess reliably most of the time while gaming. But no, no such logical rigor anywhere. Could you imagine to work it over and set some logic rules into the monster relationships? I'd offer some help if you agree.

Additionally I'd like to present you a bug I've stumbled recently upon. I had my precious +4 lab coat enchanted to erodeproof. But suddenly "Lou's sneaker", a lvl 1 rustmonster crossed my way and hit me. My fully identified coat now has the complete nonlogic description: "burnt fireproof +4 lab coat". I suppose that such contradiction shouldn't be possible. What do you say? Is it a bug? Can you easily correct the source code to stop that? Or do you say that it's a feature and Extended doesn't need logical, non-contradictory rules? -- Happy monday, I'm looking forward to your reply. -- Gus 13:51, 30 April 2018 (UTC)

Hi, and thanks for playing SLEX :) The monster list on the wiki is unfortunately out of date, and we already tried to put the complete list there but then the wiki broke because there's just so many monsters. Sacrificing a monster of your neutral alignment should not actually have any ill effects, or at least I never encountered any unless the monster in question is a unicorn; however, if your race counts as human, any werecreature you sacrifice counts as a same-race sacrifice (because all werecreatures always count as human), which will normally make the altar chaotic and can have other bad effects. The in-game "pokedex" should also give you the monster's alignment: 0 is neutral, negative numbers are chaotic and positive ones are lawful. Unfortunately there's the limitation that pokedex entries can only be accessed for living monsters though.
The lab coat thing is not a bug; Lou's sneaker has a "wither" attack, which damages gear regardless of erosionproofing or being outright immune to damage. The damage can still be fixed by using another confused scroll of enchant armor though. So yeah, it is a feature :) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 09:15, 1 May 2018 (UTC)
There is an easy solution for too huge list files: subdivide it into same glyph type monster lists. Maybe you should try this obvious approach? -- No, it was not a were creature that converted my co-aligned neutral altar to lawful. And I know in-game pokedex (I even added the nasty nopokedex cloak to the item list) but I'd plead in favour of not recommending/enforcing to use it too much. Always necessary looking up any new encounters slows down gaming a lot. If there are too much slowing factors you could lose motivation. -- Well, I don't appreciate that 'wither' feature for that low level monster because it ignores any game balance issue. Low level monsters will appear quite early in the game. That's not favorable to attracting people to try out SLEX game, isn't it? I'd say we need more self-explanatory rule features in SLEX while the sheer flood of confusing elements (monsters & items) makes it a hard challenge in any case. What do you say? --Gus 12:46, 2 May 2018 (UTC)
If I had a hell of a lot of free time, I might undertake the huge task of making a page for every monster glyph, but unfortunately I don't :( -- Do you happen to remember what the monster was that converted the altar? With 18k monster species, it's inevitable that the player has to use the pokedex from time to time; no one can remember the stats of every single one. -- Sorry, but the wither attack is working as intended. SLEX is supposed to be a difficult game, and while I realize that it narrows down the player base, I have a firm design philosophy that I'm using; the occasional dangerous low-level monster is fully intentional. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 15:58, 2 May 2018 (UTC)

explanation of implants urgently needed

Hi, Amy BSOD
Have been starting a healer in SLEX v228 recently and stumbled upon lots of implants. I'm very, very unhappy that there are neither descriptions nor explanations for these additions to SLEX. What might do an implant of e.g. "winter", "terror", "dispatch" or "badass"? Inside gaming there is a more than just bad chance to identify an implant. "Implant identification only worked 1 times out of 19." tells the quitting/RIP report most of the times. Naturally I've looked around. The fitting list of "Item (Slash'EM Extended)" contains not the slightest hint on this class of objects. Well, I'd gladly write some remarks on those if I'd a chance to make reliable experiences while gaming SLEX. But nearly no identifying possible for ratios like "1 times out of 19". So the game internal database is knocked out, what to do now? The one and only hint by searching the complete nethackwiki found: the small and mostly forgotten SciFi roguelike ZAPM knows implants. I've played it a little bit and found out that ZAPM bionic implants most probably have nothing at all to do with SLEX implants. So even the ZAPM follower listing of RogueBasin's PRIME/Implants helps anyway. --- So that's you alone who should be able to explain a) the SLEX implants concept b) where did it come from? c) how to use it in gaming SLEX? Please help us/me out, and please do it without much time burning away. :)) -- Gus 13:28, 8 September 2018 (UTC)

Implants are a new class of items that anyone can wear, but which are most useful for those who lack hands (either by being a race without hands or polymorphing into a handless monster). They grant AC, more if in a form without hands, and some of them also have magical properties. Every implant also has a "hidden" property that is only active while in a form without hands, and which is always guaranteed to be a beneficial one, unlike the "base" property that may well be a nastytrap effect. Implants are, as you found out, notoriously hard to identify. There is an implants skill though, and if that is high enough, some implants may automatically identify themselves upon putting them on. With low implants skill, it can be very difficult or even impossible to remove an implant. Few roles have the implants skill, but a bunch of races get the skill with varying caps. Basically, the more handicapped a race is, the higher its maximum implants skill will usually be. Unlike ZAPM, you can only wear one implant at a time. Training the skill works by just wearing the implant for a prolonged period of time (this takes a while to improve the skill) or by having the implant block incoming attacks (this trains the skill faster). Also, the scroll or technique of secure identify can be used to identify an implant without fail. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 14:46, 8 September 2018 (UTC)
Thank you for your quick reply! I'v tried out some more possibilities as for gaining knowledge on implants use. The results are more or less decouraging. The one and only one I ever got identified gave AC +3 but shortly after "P" implanting it began to garble the text output thus destroying the ongoing game. Ugly end of game if you have to suicide an avatar b/c no longer playable podex outputs etc. The PODEX told me about self-cursing possibilities. Just trial and error studies found out that most of the ~13 different implants are indeed self-cursing. Making a serial experiment with repeated scroll of inventory id use on 7 diverse implants did bring no usable result. My decision due to those experiences is to kick implants away if they cross my way b/c they are mostly evil/destroying survivability. I do not even know of at least one really beneficial implant. It would be much apprecaited if you could add a list of them to item (Slash'EM Extended). -- By the way I congratulate you for the new namegiving "SLEX = Sadistic Levels of Endless eXitement". It's quite true this description as a label. ;-) While I'm a quite intellectually curious guy I'm still continuing to play/experiment with it. But No I'm not at all masochistic! -- By the way I'd like to know about two other "knots". 1) What sense makes the sin concept? You know, when the final summary of a RIP comes out, it tells you sth like "You carried 0/2/7 sins". AFAIK e.g. killing watchmen or shop keepers earns you a "sin". But is that just a note or does it indicate a bad luck guarantee? Can you eventually cancel a SLEX "sin"? 2) What origin and what practicability have those (japanese?) forms I-VI which sometimes occur in the SLEX skill table? -- Gus 11:35, 10 September 2018 (UTC)
Implants generally have a chance of autocursing when worn; they're meant to be dangerous. With the garbled text one you seem to have gotten particularly unlucky; some of SLEX's "nastytrap" effects can be spectacularly crippling, although you could still have looked for a nymph and drop everything else to get her to steal the bad implant. Also, there's currently 100 implants in the game, but they're all randomized at game start so they're even spoiler-proof to an extent; an "implant of waste" may give 5 AC and magic resistance in one game, which would be a cause of celebration, and in the next game it might give only 1 AC and make your display intermittently all gray, screwing you over.
The new meaning of SLEX was suggested by someone on reddit, glad you like it :) The sin concept is from dnethack: if you break your role's specific conduct or do certain "evil" actions such as murdering or stealing, your sin counter can increase. That is permanent, there's no way to reduce it. If your sin counter is high enough, the game may occasionally summon a bunch of Kops to attack you. And here's a link to the forum post in which I've explained the lightsaber forms: https://forum.rpg.net/showthread.php?723346-(Let-s-Play!)-Slash-EM-Extended-a-NetHack-fork&p=22007460#post22007460 (they're not Japanese, but originate from Star Wars instead) ;) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 16:48, 10 September 2018 (UTC)
As a quite secular inhabitant of Old Europe I'm surely no friend of sin concepts which are typically of American origin like nipple pict bans. But I'm content that not more than a bunch of Keystone Cops could be stalking me b/c of accidentally committed sins. Well, I'm quite pleased about your insightful answer! Mucho gracias! -- Gus 11:07, 11 September 2018 (UTC)

quite small bug

Hi Amy, a non-crash program disorder in SLEX 2.3.1 told me to inform you. I made a screenshot & uploaded it here: File:Lightblastbug231.png. (Just set it in wiki-brackets to read it.) I could play on, so I'm not really concerned. A quite small bug. -- By the way could you please tell me about origin and concept of "heavily cursed"? Beside three player roles in SLEX the complete nethackwiki doesn't hold any entries about this unknown concept. -- Gus 15:19, 28 September 2018 (UTC)

Ah, the wereblacklight error, I have no clue how to fix that one, but it's a known bug; if the wereblacklight changes to human form upon dying, the light source that its light form emits gets confused, but it has never been an issue so far so my advice would be to just continue your game. If you get any actual crashes from it though, please notify me. And the cursed items idea is from Angband: stuff can be heavily or prime cursed, which is progressively worse than regular cursed stuff. Heavily cursed items resist any uncursing attempt 66% of the time and otherwise works exactly like a cursed item. And prime cursed items resist uncursing 90% of the time, plus having any prime cursed item in your open inventory (even if it's not worn) makes all your other stuff gradually curse itself too! Also, sticky cursed items exist, those cannot be stolen by nymphs or rusted away, i.e. the sticky curse makes it so that certain ways of getting rid of cursed items no longer work so you'll probably have to uncurse it if you want to get it off. Finally, there's the extremely rare Topi Ylinen curse, Black Breath curse and Ancient Morgothian curse, having any item with one of those in open inventory does truly nasty things and they resist uncursing attempts 99% of the time. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 08:21, 29 September 2018 (UTC)
Oops, I'm really apalled from hearing about a whole religious world of curses implemented in SLEX. Probably I didn't know much of them b/c they appear mostly in depths where my avatars have rarely survived. And I'm normally burdened enough with grey stones & surviving the lacking means against e.g. Illness and Slimyfication when the God help doesn't work any more and cure scrolls are gone. Did the noble Finnish roguelike pioneer Topi Ylinen really deserve to be the namegiver for such a cruel death sentence? :-) Indeed, Amy, you're right to say SLEX is a quite sadistic variant. Thanks nevertheless for your rich info about these rude aberratio mechanisms deeply woven into SLEX. Half of it I'd never been aware of. I will in future separate out most cursed items out of my inventory to avoid curse contagion effects. And I've understood correctly that items in a bag are no problem, no domino effects at all? -- Gus 08:50, 30 September 2018 (UTC)
Well, Topi Ylinen is one of the developers of Zangband, where the "evil curse" originates, and it's called TY_CURSE in the source of that game... and since I very closely replicated that curse's effects in SLEX, why not give credit? :) Prime cursed (or evil cursed) items inside containers are safe, it's only when one is in your main inventory that Bad Stuff(TM) happens. And heavily cursed items are also safe to have in inventory; they're in all regards identical to regular cursed items other than that they're harder to uncurse, although of course the risk exists that if a heavily cursed item is hit by a curse items effect again, it may progress to prime cursed. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 15:01, 30 September 2018 (UTC)
You're certainly right about giving credits to pioneers who deserve it. I had been playing Zangband years ago. That game was a little more fancy than vanilla angband and I had read some novels by Zelazny. Nevertheless even the taste of this heavy metal roguelike was getting dull after some time. Today Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup has taken the crown of roguelike heavy metal, so I would say if asked. Even that got stale. Your own SLEX ist even more like death metal, the ungulpable ultra variant. The total lack of reasonable reduction to empower gamers' sportive feelings makes it somewhat trashy... and extraordinary! It's far beyond normal roguelike cruelties, it's overkill if you happen to stumble into grey stones, monsters with withering attacks, angered gods that "need" a unicorn sacrified to be mollified and give help in time again against Illness etc. Well, sometimes you can indeed survive a tension room filled with all sorts of trolls, "IF" you happen to have a tinning kit or two hungry pets which stop the revival of uneaten trolls. After surviving sceneries like that you're grinning broadly for quite a while. :)) Yeah, it's bitter if you're developing quite well to xp level 10 and there is nowhere even a simple sack to put all those collected items out of the way. Challenging. (By the way, those dark magenta stairs to neigbouring departments are quite difficult to spot; shouldn't there be more visible colors like bright red? Easily changed.) -- Gus 16:58, 1 October 2018 (UTC)
The bright pink staircases should actually be easy to see, maybe your terminal setup makes that color dark for some reason? I'm not sure which terminal emulator you're using but you might want to change the bright pink color so that it's actually bright ;) That said, you are playing locally, right? In that case it's your lucky day today: I've updated the binary archives on Github and Box, so you can now download and play the brand-new bleeding-edge version 2.35 and be the first beta tester for that. As always, the changelog is at https://raw.githubusercontent.com/SLASHEM-Extended/SLASHEM-Extended/master/history2.txt and the newest changes can also be viewed at https://github.com/SLASHEM-Extended/SLASHEM-Extended/commits/master :) Enjoy! --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 16:49, 2 October 2018 (UTC)
Oh, advancement as a beta tester now? ;-) Well, thank you for ... the link, I will download and use it. By the way, I love to know that little blog about your change logs! -- BTW chapeau! Your brisk pace in new updates is breathtaking! End of Aug 18 it was v231, now five weeks later v235. I must confess that a Stones citation come into my mind: "But what's puzzling me is the nature of this game" (Sympathy for...). -- How come that in 2014 you gave a 'gmx.de' email? Do you happen to be still living in Germany (like me)? -- Gus 19:34, 2 October 2018 (UTC)
Heh, I actually feel that slex development is creeping along at a snail's pace right now, I planned to have much more stuff implemented by now... And yes, I'm from Germany where I'm still currently living :) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 20:01, 2 October 2018 (UTC)
Hey, I'm betatesting v235 now. ;-) Betatest the College Graduate, xp lev 11, no bugs up to now, but they are lurking in the depths to come. Just tell me, why the log tells my avatar, she is "a drunken boxer"? No, not confused, AFAIK no evil thing in inventory, even Wozniak is quite happy with her, luck is zero but not below. So why this confusing remark logged? An intrinsic likely? Where does it come from and what should it tell me? - BTW good to know that we have a 2nd language if needed. -- Gus 12:22, 4 October 2018 (UTC)
That's nice, I hope the version is stable enough so that you won't run into critical bugs! Drunken boxing is indeed an intrinsic, gained by eating the corpse of a monster that has confusion attacks, and indicated by the message "You feel ready for a good brawl." It means that if you're confused, your melee attacks deal an additional point of damage. And yeah, es ist gut, zwei Sprachen benutzen zu können :D --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 14:04, 4 October 2018 (UTC)

Some questions about Techniques

Hey, Amy!
Some questions about Techniques in SLEX. I've noticed that Binder (role in Slash'em Extended) lists a lot of redlinks in the techniques column. That means that SLEX has expanded the concept with a lot of extra ideas. Maybe we/I should build a separate SLEX techniques article? -- This wiki offers 49 entries for techniques that cover all those that came as part of SLASH'EM which is obviously the origin of the concept. Well, how many more techniques did you install? You might give the weblink to the source file so I can look it up myself and see the details. (As long as I not even know the name of the src file I'm not keen on sourece diving.) -- Further on, I want to understand the internal log tables of techniques. What do those markers 'R' or 'O' indicate? -- By the way, I don't think that those 'huge timeouts' like you/SLASH did burden on Panic digging is any good for gamers' motivation. Timeout is okay IMHO but it should definitely be moderate instead of 'huge'. -- Gus 19:10, 2 October 2018 (UTC)

Techniques are in https://raw.githubusercontent.com/SLASHEM-Extended/SLASHEM-Extended/master/src/tech.c and there's a huge amount of additional ones. But I fear that if we were to make a page for every single SLEX technique, the wiki would turn into SLEXwiki. It would probably be better to have one large page for SLEX-specific techniques. Also, the timeouts are working as intended; "huge timeout" means that it's 10000 turns or longer. Panic digging is supposed to not come online too quickly after using it. Anyway, R means that you got the technique due to your race, X means it comes from your role, and O indicates that you got it in some other way, e.g. by enhancing a skill highly enough or by equipping certain artifacts. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 20:00, 2 October 2018 (UTC)
I did a little guess work and found it myself: Source tech.c. It's nevertheless confusingly rich in material which makes it difficult to get an overview and to find specific details. -- Gus 20:06, 2 October 2018 (UTC)

what's the heck with Emmelie's Sneakers and alikes?

The weird gnome/shoe named Emmelie's Sneakers harasses me. If I want to combat her I get a message "Wait, That's Emmelies Sneakers!" stopping my attack. I've even been code diving at raw.githubusercontent and found nothing in the monster description which could AFAIK be responsible for that behavior. Please, help me out! (still v235, not 237) -- Gus 08:31, 11 October 2018 (UTC)

That's a permamimic, and the hints page at https://nethackwiki.com/wiki/User:Bluescreenofdeath/Hints actually describes how to deal with them, but here goes: if you use F (shift-f) and then hit a direction key, you will attack in that direction even if you can't see the monster that is there. You're not seeing her permamimic flag in the code because she's a random stats monster, so while she is a permamimic in this particular game she might not be one in your next run ;) Also, out of curiosity, have you ever considered playing online? There's lots of fun to be had because you can find other players' bones files, compare your scores with theirs, and if you were to score an ascension nobody could accuse you of cheating! And to top it off, we have IRC channels on Freenode where you can meet other players including me! --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 09:51, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
Ah, oh, permamimic but not declared as such. Bad enough for 'clear' gaming. Didn't guess that. Sometimes you need s.o. to tell you. Thank you for your tips. Well, the shift-f method is maybe a bit cumbersome. -- No, I'm not at all interested in playing online. Mostly because I'm not interested in permanently comparing myself. The one and only reason for me to play is fun and intellectual challenge. Competition is IMHO part of job labors but not of leisure fun doings. The very young might need competition fights, I'm beyond that. No, thank you, no way! -- Gus 21:12, 15 October 2018 (UTC)

WoC src webadress

Please tell me the filename and webadress to source dive SLEX "Wand of Cancellation" myself. -- By the way, shouldnt the SLEX Xp levels not be changed to be more like SLASH instead of vanilla NH? -- And how would you play a Binder role who needs more skill slots for gaining intrinsics and obviously needs some level draining by Wand/spell or vampire type monsters? Thanks for usable tips. -- Gus 07:42, 16 October 2018 (UTC)

The source repository is linked from the main SLASH'EM article and can be found here: https://github.com/SLASHEM-Extended/SLASHEM-Extended - cancellation code would be in src/zap.c. About the SLEX experience levels, I've changed the values to accomodate for the longer duration of the game, it used to be that the player would be XL30 at a million experience which Tariru always reached about halfway through Gehennom. Therefore I overhauled it and now potions of gain level are useful again. And the binder I actually ascended once; there was never a need to level drain myself on purpose to max out the intrinsics and techniques, because I found the ones I got from my level up points to be plenty enough to win the game. Also, in the current version, crowning gives 5 extra skill points and completing the Angmar dungeon gives another 5 points. If that's still not enough, I guess level drain can make it possible to obtain missing intrinsics/techs. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 09:16, 16 October 2018 (UTC)

Possible bug with laser beam?

Today, I had started an Asgardian Zyborg game, and like the idiot I was, died to food poisoning. I was looking through the special facts about my game, and noticed this message: The RNG hath decreed that this item was generated more often: laser beam ((null), freq bonus 8). I am just wondering whether laser beam (null) is an actual laser beam type, or if this is a bug. I'm not sure where the laser beam code would be on GitHub, so I decided to post this here. Thanks!

This happens when an item doesn't have an unidentified description; it does look weird, but is not a bug :) Ideally I'd want the game to display the full name of the item there but somehow it doesn't, e.g. instead of "potion of healing" it just displays "healing", which can mean the potion, scroll, wand or spellbook, and therefore I added the unidentified appearance so the player can deduce which of the items it really is. The code for that is in cmd.c; fixes welcome :) --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 05:55, 17 July 2019 (UTC)

If that is the case, I'll gladly add them ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Thanks! Also I want to add your funny "hallucinatory" monsters soon! --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 06:26, 5 August 2019 (UTC)

Woo-hoo! Way to go! Yes please, add by all means. I was quite happy with polaravian. Polar-avian for a spellbook. Not even Google knows. Get it? :-) Wikid (talk) 06:45, 5 August 2019 (UTC)
