A leather jacket is a type of body armor that appears in NetHack. It is naturally made of leather.

Generation

The Archeologist starts each game with a +0 leather jacket.[1]

In addition to random generation, general stores, used armor dealerships and antique weapon outlets can sell leather jackets.

Students, attendants, abbots, acolytes, guides, and apprentices have a 815 chance of being generated with a leather jacket;[2] hunters have a 14 chance of being generated with a jacket;[3] and thugs have a 12 chance of being generated with a jacket.[4]

Description

While worn, the leather jacket grants 1 base AC.

Strategy

The leather jacket is the weakest body armor available that grants base AC: though it is lightweight and does not interfere with spellcasting, it should be replaced with better armor as soon as possible.

History

The leather jacket first appears in NetHack 3.1.0. In prior versions, the Archeologist instead starts with +0 leather armor.[5]

Variants

In variants with object materials, leather jackers may appear as simply jackets.

SLASH'EM

In SLASH'EM, the Undead Slayer has a 14 chance of starting with a +1 leather jacket.

Upgrading a leather jacket will produce leather armor.

dNetHack

In dNetHack and notdNetHack, the jacket confers 0 base AC, 1 DR and MC2 while worn, and its weight is reduced to 20 aum. Jackets always display their material, even if it is the same as their base material.

The Pirate role starts each game with a +0 leather jacket. Mayor Cummerbund, the Pirate quest leader, has a 13 chance of generating with a fireproof leather jacket; skeletal pirates may be generated with a rotted leather jacket.T

The Beastmaster's Duster is an artifact jacket made of dragonhide.

SlashTHEM

In addition to SLASH'EM details, SlashTHEM adds two artifact leather jackets: the Beastmaster's Duster, which acts as the Zookeeper's first sacrifice gift, and the Full Metal Jacket. SlashTHEM also adds the Pirate role from dNetHack, and Mayor Cummerbund and skeletal pirates have the same odds of generating with leather jackets as in dNetHack.

EvilHack

In EvilHack, the Infidel role starts each game with a cursed fireproof +1 leather jacket - giant Infidels will instead start with a cursed fireproof +1 pair of low boots.

Cultists have a 815 chance of being generated with a leather jacket.
