Orcish chain mail is a type of body armor that appears in NetHack. It is made of iron, and appears as crude chain mail when unidentified.

Generation

Mordor orcs have a 13 chance of being generated with orcish chain mail;[1] orc-captains have a 12 chance of being generated with Mordor orc armor, giving them an effective 16 chance of generating with orcish chain mail.[2]

Any orcish player in a role that starts with chain mail receives orcish chain mail instead - there are currently no roles for which this substitution is applicable.[3]

Description

When worn, orcish chain mail provides 4 base AC and MC1.

Strategy

As with most orcish items, orcish chain mail is less effective than standard chain mail, and scale mail gives the same AC for less weight. Orcish chain mail can still suffice as armor for roles that do not regularly cast, at least until better and lighter armor such as a mithril-coat can be found.

History

Orcish chain mail first appears in NetHack 3.0.0.

Variants

Some variants give orcs (including the player) an AC bonus for wearing orcish chain mail, making it as effective for orcs as regular chain mail worn by other races.

SLASH'EM

In SLASH'EM, orcish Undead Slayers that start with chain mail will receive orcish chain mail instead, using the existing racial substitution code.

Upgrading orcish chain mail will produce regular chain mail, and vice versa.

UnNetHack

In UnNetHack, orcish chain mail grants +1 AC to orcish monsters that wear them, including player orcs.

dNethack

In dNetHack, orcish chain mail grants 2 AC, 2 DR and MC1 when worn, and its weight is reduced to 150 aum, half of its weight in vanilla NetHack.

EvilHack

In EvilHack, orcish chain mail grants +1 AC to orcish monsters that wear them, including player orcs.

Orcish chain mail can be created at a forge by combining ring mail and an orcish shield.
