This article is about the monster representing the playable race. For the player race, see chiropteran (starting race).

A chriopteran, B, is a type of monster that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack, and notnotdNetHack. The chiropteran is a carnivorous and neutral bat-like monster with a wide body and an elongated head that can be seen via infravision and has a tendency to wander while moving, and hostile chiropterans will also seek out weapons, food and armor to pick up.

The chiropteran monster corresponds to the playable chiropteran race and thus also possesses keen scent-based "vision" and echolocation, which makes them vulnerable to loud noises that can render them "blind" and stunned—chiropteran heroes do not share this weakness, and can also perform two weapon combat unlike non-player chiropterans.

A chiropteran has a weapon attack and a bite attack.

Generation

Randomly-generated chiropterans are always created hostile. They are often generated in small groups, and those groups are accompanied by large groups of warbats with a 13 chance of including a large group of battle-bats as well.

Chiropterans may appear among the plague victims encountered in the Healer quest and Drow Healer quest.

Fulvous chiropterans may be created by the Stranger's yellow dead monster spell.

Chiropterans generated in the future (i.e. the Anachrononaut quest and Android quest) are zombified, and will be generated with orange-colored robes, sedge hats and a 110 chance of being given an amulet versus curses that is made of wood. Chiropterans generated outside of the future always generated with leather helms and body armor that has a 1350 chance of being studded leather armor and will otherwise be leather armor; they will also generate with a weapon that has a 1350 chance of being a scythe, a 2574 chance of being a fauchard if a scythe is not given, and will otherwise be a quarterstaff if a fauchard is not given.

Origin

The word "chiropteran" is used to describe bats, which are winged mammals of the order Chiroptera: this order is the second largest order of mammals after rodents, and comprises about 20% of all classified mammal species worldwide, with over 1,400 species of bats.

The chiropterans of dNetHack and its derivatives are somewhat based on the Desmodu, ogre-sized bat-like humanoids that originate in Dungeons & Dragons and appear in the game's 3rd Edition, with some artwork depicting them riding even larger bat-like creatures. Desmodu can be found all over the Underdark, and many of them dwell in large cities within Skull Gorge (also known as The Hollow),. They are named for a genus of bats: Desmodu, Diaemus and Diphylla make up the subfamily Desmodontinae, which consists of the carnivorous, blood-consuming vampire bats of the family Phyllostomidae, or New World leaf-nosed bats.
