A leather helm is a type of helm that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. It naturally has a default material of leather, and appears as a leather hat when unidentified.

Generation

Half-dragon Noblewomen start the game with a blessed +1 leather helm. In notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack, Illithanachronounbinders start the game with an uncursed +0 leather helm.

Leather helms make up 1200 (0.5%) of all armor randomly generated on the ground, in general shops or as death drops. Used armor dealerships and antique weapon outlets can also stock leather helms.

Many monsters can be generated with leather helms:

  • Imps that are either generated in Gehennom or slated for good equipment have a 12 chance of generating with an equipment set that includes a small leather helm.
  • Shattered Ziggurat wizards always generate with a leather helm.
  • Neanderthals always generate with dragonhide helms that have an enchantment ranging from +0 to +3.
  • Acolytes, hunters and warriors always generate with leather helms.
  • Ninja are always generated with black leather helms.
  • Mercenaries have an effective 16 chance of generating with an elven helm, which only occurs if they do not receive a helmet and are not Yendorian army monsters being generated in the Law Quest.
  • Noviere Eladrin always generate with leather helms.
  • Firre Eladrin have a 12 chance of generating with an equipment set that includes a leather helm.
  • The Mad Grazi always generates with a leather helm.
  • Mind flayers and master mind flayers that are generated on R'lyeh, the lowest floor of the Neutral Quest, always generate with cursed fireproof leather helms—a mind flayer's leather helm will be medium-sized and +1, while a master mind flayer's leather helm will be large-sized and +4. Those that are created outside of R'lyeh and levels set in the future (i.e. the Anachrononaut quest and Android quest) will always generate with leather helms as well.
  • Duergar debilitators always generate with +2 leather helms.
  • Deminymphs that are randomly generated outside of the Drow Healer quest or the Lost Cities have an effective 1170 chance of being given an undead hunter kit with a leather helm that has an enchantment ranging from +2 to +5.
  • Mountain centaurs that generate with studded leather armor will also generate with a leather helm.
  • Undead rebels generate with rotted leather helms.
  • Erinyes that generate outside of Gehennom and the Mordor Ruins quest and are not slated for good equipment have an effective 35 chance of generating with an equipment set that includes a leather helm.
  • Mariliths that generate within Gehennom or else are slated for good equipment have an effective 12 chance of generating with an equipment set that includes a leather helm.
  • Giant spiders have a 695 chance of being generated with a leather helm.
  • Chiropterans generated outside of the future always generate with a leather helm.
  • Cave lizards have a 1695 chance of being generated with a leather helm.
  • Large cave lizards have a 2089 chance of being generated with a leather helm.
  • Alhoons always generate with a cursed +4 leather helm.
  • Mammon always generates with a large cursed dragonhide helm.
  • Player monster rangers and rogues are always generated with leather helms.
