- For the same monster or other monsters with this name that appear in variants, see Chromatic Dragon (disambiguation).
A chromatic dragon, D, is a type of monster that appears in UnNetHack. Chromatic dragons are a rare type of non-unique dragon that share the same name and many of the same traits as the Chromatic Dragon, the Cave(wo)man quest nemesis, who is renamed Tiamat in UnNetHack—however, they also possess flight, have a lower difficulty level and lack Tiamat's spellcasting and sting attacks.
A chromatic dragon has a powerful random breath weapon, two strong bite attacks, and a claw attack. Chromatic dragons possess the resistance properties of all dragons: stoning resistance, fire resistance, shock resistance, cold resistance, sleep resistance, disintegration resistance, poison resistance, acid resistance, magic resistance, and reflection.
A chromatic dragon's corpse is poisonous to eat, and eating its corpse or tin grants one of the following properties with a 1⁄6 chance of each: fire resistance, cold resistance, sleep resistance, disintegration resistance, shock resistance, or poison resistance.
Generation
Chromatic dragons are not randomly generated. They are the only dragons in UnNetHack to lack a baby form, meaning that chromatic dragon eggs will hatch into fully-grown dragons (though their eggs do not randomly generate). They are not valid genocide targets, and statues, figurines and eggs of chromatic dragons cannot be wished for. A chromatic dragon cannot be chosen as a polymorph form through normal means: this can only occur if a hero or monster wearing chromatic dragon scales or scale mail polymorphs, by either quaffing a potion of polymorph, zapping a wand of polymorph at themselves, or casting the polymorph spell on themselves.
Three chromatic dragons are generated on the far end of the lowest floor within the Dragon Caves at level creation.
Chromatic dragons have a 1⁄6 chance of dropping a set of uncursed +0 chromatic dragon scales along with their corpse upon death, and the chance is reduced to 1⁄20 if the dragon was revived.
Strategy
Chromatic dragons are the source of chromatic dragon scale mail for many players: the scales and their mail grant the resistances of every variety of dragon scale mail available in the game, including reflection, magic resistance and stoning resistance (granted by the 'stone dragon', which has a randomized name).
History
In earlier versions of UnNetHack, statues, eggs and figurines of chromatic dragons are wishable items, allowing a hero to attempt obtaining chromatic dragon scales without entering the Dragon Caves. These options are partially eliminated in development version r1580, and fully eliminated in version 5.2.0.
Encyclopedia entry
Fearsome dragons who are channeling the powers of lesser dragons like their mother Tiamat. Legends tell of a far away realm where these creatures can be found in large numbers.
