A faceless helm is a type of helm that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. It has a base material of bone, and its current material is appended to the item name.
A bird-like faceless helm is the base item for the artifact The War-helm of the Dreaming.
Generation
Vampire Madpeople start each game wearing a cursed iron faceless helm.
Faceless helms are not randomly generated, though they can be wished for or found in bones.
Some monsters and their statues can be generated with faceless helms:
- Corvian knights are always generated with metal faceless helms fitted to their head's shape.
- The Suzerain is always generated with a +5 bone faceless helm.
- Poro Aulons always generate with a faceless helm that has a 2⁄3 chance of being silver and will otherwise be platinum.
- The statue of a Poro Aulon placed on the Drow Healer quest home level has a blessed +1 silver faceless helm inside.
- Deminymphs that are generated with anachrononaut kits are given a bone faceless helm with an enchantment ranging from +1 to +3.
- Dokkalfar eternal matriarchs that are created in the future (i.e. the Anachrononaut quest and Android quest) are generated with a cursed +5 shadowsteel faceless helm.
- Rage-walkers always generate with spiked iron faceless helms.
Description
While worn, a faceless helm grants 2 base AC and 5 base DR, and wearing or removing a faceless helm takes two actions.
As implied by its name, a faceless helm completely covers and obscures the wearer's face, which blocks the effects of certain attacks that target the eyes (e.g. blinding venom or the blinding claw attacks of a raven). It will also disguise the mark of the spirit Andromalius. Faceless helms allow eating and quaffing along with other similar actions as long as the wearer has a hand free to adjust the helm with—a cursed faceless helm will thus prevent eating, quaffing and similar actions completely unless the wearer is weldproof.
