An ogre mage, O, is a type of monster that appears in SLASH'EM and SlashTHEM. The ogre mage is a type of ogre that is of comparable strength to the ogre lord—he is similarly considered a lord to his kind, and possesses magical abilities. Tame ogre mages may turn traitor.
An ogre mage has a weapon attack and will attempt to cast one mage monster spell during each of his turns.
Generation
Ogre mages are not randomly generated, though they are a valid form for polymorph, are flagged to never appear in Gehennom and may be generated as peaceful towards chaotic heroes—this is most likely due to an oversight, since they are not flagged as G_NOGEN and lack a frequency rating altogether (a trait shared with the shadow ogre).[1] Ogre mages can still generate randomly in other aligned dungeon branches.
Grund's Stronghold generates an ogre mage within the room containing the throne at level creation, with a 1⁄2 chance of generating a second ogre mage nearby.
An ogre mage always generates with some gold and a weapon, which has a 1⁄12 chance of being a battle-axe and will otherwise be a club, and is eligible for offensive, defensive and miscellaneous items.[2]
Strategy
Ogre mages can be deceptively annoying to deal with: they always have access to the disappear and haste self spells, and depending on the level they generate at, they will usually be able to cast drain strength as well, along with destroy armor and potentially even curse items. A hero that lacks magic resistance will want to dispose of ogre mages at a distance if possible, and can take advantage of their lack of resistances, though their MR score of 30 can make magic unreliable to this end.
