A shotgun shell, sometimes referred to simply as a shell, is a type of weapon that appears in SLASH'EM, SlashTHEM, SpliceHack, and Hack'EM. The shotgun shell is a projectile that uses the firearms skill and is designed as ammunition for shotguns and auto shotguns. It is made of iron.

Pirates in SlashTHEM know the item as a case shot. In Hack'EM, the shotgun shell appears as a red tube when unidentified, similar to the item in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack.

Generation

Shotgun shells are generated differently across variants.

SLASH'EM

In SLASH'EM, shotgun shells are not randomly generated, though they can be wished for or found in bones.

Shopkeepers are always generated with 3 different stacks of 3–22 shotgun shells as ammo for their shotgun.[1]

Yendorian army sergeants that are generated with an auto shotgun will be given 2 different stacks of 3–12 shotgun shells as ammo, while Yendorian army captains that are generated with an auto shotgun will be given 2 different stacks of 3–22 shotgun shells as ammo.[2][3]

SpliceHack

In SpliceHack, shotgun shells are not randomly generated, though they can be wished for or found in bones.

Shopkeepers are always generated with 2 different stacks of 3–22 shotgun shells as ammo for their shotgun.

SlashTHEM

In SlashTHEM, shotgun shells are very rare and make up 11000 of weapons randomly generated on the ground, in shops or as death drops, and are created in stacks of up to 10.

Weapons outlets, used armor dealerships and gun stores can also stock shotgun shells, and have a 225 chance of generating a stack of shells on each square.

Shotgun shell generation for monsters behaves as in SLASH'EM.

Hack'EM

In Hack'EM, shotgun shells are not randomly generated, though they can be wished for or found in bones.

Gun stores can stock shotgun shells, and have a 13100 chance of generating a stack of shells on each square.

An iron safe in Grund's Stronghold may contain up to 40 uncursed +2 shotgun shells, with each shell having a 25 chance of being generated.

Shopkeepers have a 1320 chance of being generated with a shotgun and 2 different stacks of 3–22 shotgun shells as ammo.

Yendorian army sergeants that are generated with an auto shotgun will be given 2 different stacks of 3–12 shotgun shells as ammo, while Yendorian army captains that are generated with an auto shotgun will be given 2 different stacks of 3–22 shotgun shells as ammo.

Shotgun shells can be created at a forge by combining an iron chain and 2 bullets.

Description

As shotgun ammunition, shotgun shells must be fired or "thrown" from an appropriate launcher to deal their actual base damage, and properly-fired shells will always mulch whether or not they hit their target. Shells on the floor or in a monster's open inventory (but not in the hero's open inventory) will be destroyed if subjected to fire damage, e.g. from exploding rockets and grenades.

In Hack'EM, shotgun shells have a based cost of 7 zm compared to 10 zm in other variants.

Strategy

While on average shotgun shells do 50% more base damage than bullets, both shotgun weapons and shells are much harder to come by: fewer monsters generate with them, those that do are relatively rare, and shopkeepers in particular are incredibly dangerous to engage in fights without serious preparation. Additionally, both launchers that shotgun shells are designed for have a very short range, and the shotgun has a low rate of fire while the auto shotgun is two-handed—this makes focusing on firearms that can use bullets a better proposition in the long run.

While an early hero could theoretically find a shotgun and shells useful in the early game, this often requires a shopkeeper to be killed and such a circumstance is generally difficult to setup. A hero that can both train the firearms skill and engineer a scenario where they can either cleanly murder a shopkeeper, or have them killed without significant risk to themselves, will often already be capable of working through most early-game situations.

Origin

A shotgun shell (or shotgun cartridge) is a type of rimmed and cylindrical (or straight-walled) ammunition used specifically in shotguns. It is typically loaded with numerous small, spherical sub-projectiles called "shot", and shotgun barrels are typically smoothbore to regulate the extent of scattering from fired shot. Some cartridges contain a single solid projectile known as a "slug" (sometimes fired through a rifled slug barrel). The caliber of the cartridge is known as its "gauge".

The casing for a shotgun shell usually consists of a paper or plastic tube with a metallic base containing the primer, and the shot charge is typically contained by wadding inside the case. Paper hulls were first adopted in the late 1870s to replace brass hulls and shells, while plastic hulls began replacing paper hulls for the majority of cartridges from the early 1960s to the late 1970s, and by the early 1980s plastic hulls had become universally adopted (though paper and brass are still occasionally used). The shot itself is traditionally made of lead, but other metals like steel, tungsten and bismuth are also used, due to either restrictions on lead or performance improvements (e.g., achieving higher shot velocities by reducing the mass of the shot charge), and cartridges can also be made with specialty non-lethal projectiles such as rubber and bean bag rounds.

Shotguns have an effective range of about 35 m (38 yd) with buckshot, 45 m (49 yd) with birdshot, 100 m (110 yd) with slugs, and well over 150 m (160 yd) with saboted slugs in rifled barrels, with the spread of small projectiles making a direct hit unnecessary. Comparatively, shotguns and shells in SLASH'EM are exaggeratedly short in range but high-accuracy: this is likely based on a similar trend applied to shotguns in many shooter games, where they are portrayed as close-range weapons with a conical spread range that inflicts heavy damage to targets within the area (presumably due to the shot hitting those targets before a majority of the spread occurs).
