A spike is a type of weapon-like item that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack, and notnotdNetHack. It is a tiny and stackable projectile that uses the dart skill, and has a default material of bone.
Generation
Spikes are not randomly generated, though they can be wished for or found in bones.
Sea garden shops run by yurians in Elshava can stock shell spikes that are coated with either regular poison (2⁄3 chance) or acid (1⁄3 chance).
The Black Web entity is a spirit that grants the hero the ability to fire spikes in a specified direction using its active power while bound: these spikes are always uncursed, made of shadowsteel, given the faded object property, have an enchantment of 8 + 5dX (where X is the number of spirit dice), and are coated in regular and blinding poisons. These spikes will always mulch on impact upon reaching a monster's square (even if they miss the monster) or a wall, creating a web on that square and trapping monsters they hit.
The statues of colossal clockwork war-machines found on the Paths of Law in the Law Quest each contain 5-9 cursed and gigantic +5 bone spikes that are both envenomed and coated in acid.
Several monsters can create and fire spikes at targets one at a time using an "arrow" projectile attack, which always causes the spike to mulch:
- Manticores, ancient nupperibos and daughters of bedlam fire envenomed bone spikes.
- Edderkops and aliders fire +8 faded shadowsteel spikes that are coated in regular and blinding poisons, are teleported directly to the target and leave behind a web upon hitting a target or square.
- Dao lao gui monks fire bone spikes as a form of ranged projectile attack that have a 1⁄20 chance of being coated in disease-inflicting filth, and are otherwise coated in regular poison.
Manticores that are killed leave behind 4-24 spikes as a death drop: they will always do so unless they were killed after being revived, which reduces the odds to roughly 1⁄2 for Cavepeople and 1⁄6 otherwise.
Description
A spike deals piercing damage, and inflicts 1d3 damage against small monsters and 1d2 against large monsters (though its item entry specifies 1d1 for large monsters). Spikes must be thrown or fired to inflict their full damage, and can be multishot when thrown or fired by means other than monster attacks. A hero throwing spikes at Skilled or better in darts gains the "focus fire" expert trait.
