The Gauntlets of Spell Power is the name of an artifact that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. They are unaligned, and their base item is a pair of silvered iron gauntlets of power that appear as a silver-runed variation of their randomized appearance.

Generation

The Gauntlets of Spell Power can be given to any hero that can wear gloves as a sacrifice gift, although it will never be the first one given.

Description

While worn, The Gauntlets of Spell Power grant half spell damage, add a major bonus to the hero's spellcasting that is partly (and deliberately) mitigated by the artifact's iron material, and double the damage of beam- and ray-based spells cast by the hero as with The Magic Mirror of Merlin. Spells cast while wearing The Gauntlets of Spell Power are treated as being cast at one skill level higher, which does not affect failure rates.

As iron gauntlets, The Gauntlets of Spell Power apply HP regeneration penalties for fey heroes–which consist of elves, drow, yuki-onna, and leprechauns–and deal the standard bonus damage when performing unarmed melee attacks against fey monsters. As silvered artifact gauntlets, they also inflict +1d20 damage against silver-hating monsters, but will not apply HP regeneration penalties for a silver-hating hero, such as a vampire or tiefling.

History

The Gauntlets of Spell Power are among some of the oldest artifacts present in dNetHack dating back to before version control was first applied.
