A short sword weighs 30, costs 10, is made out of iron, and is represented by ). It does 1d6 damage to small monsters, and 1d8 to large monsters. Other short swords are elven short sword, orcish short sword and dwarvish short sword. To samurai, it is known as a wakizashi. Slash'EM and SporkHack add a silver short sword as well.

There are no artifact short swords.
Generation
The ordinary short sword makes up about 0.8% of randomly generated weapons (on the floor, as death drops, or in shops).
In addition, the following monsters may get short swords:
- Watchmen and soldiers in the Yendorian army[1] and skeletons[2] may be generated with a short sword.
- Ninja (on the Samurai quest) have a chance of getting a wakizashi.[3]
- Player monster rogues, such as Pug on the Wizard quest, may be generated with a short sword.[4]
Rogues and Samurai start with a +0 short sword (wakizashi for the latter). A +0 short sword is also part of one of two starting weapon combinations for Barbarians.
Strategy
The weakest of the swords, the short sword lacks the damage potential of larger weapons, as well as an artifact version.
Variants
Silver short swords can be found in SLASH'EM and SporkHack.
SLASH'EM also adds[5] a few artifact short swords:
