Ymir, Lord of the Grassless Gap is a spirit that appears in dNetHack and notdNetHack.

Ritual, seal and taboo

Ymir's seal must be drawn around the rotted corpse of a poisonous monster.

To remain bound to Ymir, you must not eat or sacrifice giants.

Mark

A character that has Ymir bound will rot, with the rot becoming more visible and progressively worse as they remain in the dungeon - this rot can be detected from a distance, and requires the following armor to disguise based on the total amount of turns in that game:

  • Less than 5,000 turns: None
  • 5,000-10,000 turns: Any cloak or body armor that covers the upper torso
  • 10,000-20,000 turns: Any cloak
  • 20,000-50,000 turns: Any cloak, gloves, boots
  • 50,000-100,000 turns: Any cloak, body armor that covers the upper torso, gloves, boots, and helm
  • More than 100,000 turns: Any cloak, body armor that covers the upper torso, gloves, boots, and full head covering (i.e. either a helm and a mask, or a r'lyehian faceplate)

The only types of body armor to not cover the upper torso are Hawaiian shorts and waistcloths.

Benefits

While bound, Ymir confers poison resistance and grants skill in clubs.

Ymir's active powers are as follows:

  • Poison Gaze: Deal 5 dice of poison damage to a single target monster.
  • Gap Step: The character begins to levitate, as with the blessed potion of levitation or the spell cast at Skilled or better. The levitation lasts for a duration equal to Ymir's remaining binding period, plus a 5-turn safety margin, and can be ended at-will using >.

His passive powers are as follows:

  • Footsteps of Giants: The character can move over boulders and pick them up as a giant can.
  • Poison-born: Quaffing a potion of sickness heals the character.
  • Putrescent Life: Attributes are quickly restored if lowered.
  • Formidable Stature: The character is counted as the size above their current one for the purpose of wielding weapons, including offhand weapons (e.g. medium characters are considered large).

As a monster

In notdNetHack, Ymir, H, also appears as a monster that can be summoned by an Illithanachronounbinder. He is a strong and thick-skinned giant humanoid that is considered to be both giant and human, and will seek out various items to pick up including gold, gems and magical items. Ymir can fly, has infravision, can be seen via infravision, can pick up and throw boulders, and will follow the character to other levels if adjacent.

Ymir has two weapon attacks, a strong kick attack, and the ability to create boulders for throwing at targets. He possesses cold resistance, sleep resistance, poison resistance, and stoning resistance.

Ymir is poisonous to consume, which primarily comes up if he is actively or passively abducted by Ahazu, but consuming Ymir this way grants temporary sleep resistance. Like many summoned spirits he cannot be tamed, and will turn traitor if somehow tamed.

Generation

Ymir is first generated when summoned from his seal by an Illithanachronounbinder. He is always created hostile, and is not a valid form for normal polymorph.

Ymir is generated with a +7 double lightsaber that is made of platinum, an amulet of reflection, and the following gigantic-sized uncursed armor: +7 crystal boots, +7 crystal gauntlets, a +7 crystal shield, a +7 crystal helm, a +7 cloak of magic resistance, and the +10 Plates of the Near Void. The Plates of the Near Void is an artifact set of crystal plate mail that confers half physical damage and magical breathing while worn, and can be safely enchanted to +10 - invoking the Plates confers temporary phasing.

Ymir does not leave a corpse upon death.

Strategy

Below this point, there are major spoilers for the Illithanachronounbinder role. They can be accessed by selecting the "Role spoiler" tab.

To be written.

If Ymir is killed after being summoned, he can be encountered again in the Void, a branch accessed by opening the high altar of Ilsensine the Fallen as an Illithanachronounbinder using the invoke effect of The Elder Cerebral Fluid. Ymir is placed randomly along with many other spirits of the near void on the second floor of the branch, and is generated with the "whispers" template, which makes him nonliving.

Encyclopedia entry

There was, in times of old, when Ymir lived,
neither sea nor sand nor waves,
no earth, nor heaven above,
but a yawning gap, and grass nowhere.

From Ymir's flesh the earth was formed,
and from his bones the hills.
From Ymir's skull, the ice-cold sky,
and from his blood the sea.
