A gnome thief, G, is a type of monster that appears in SLASH'EM, SlashTHEM and Hack'EM. The gnome thief is a monster that is part of the gnome monster class - they have infravision, can be seen via infravision and will seek out items to pick up. In SLASH'EM, gnome thieves are not considered to be gnomish despite being part of the gnome monster class - in SlashTHEM and Hack'EM, they are properly considered gnomish monsters.

A gnome thief has a weapon attack and the ability to steal items similar to nymphs, teleporting away after a successful theft.

Tame gnome thieves may turn traitor.

Generation

Gnome thieves are not randomly generated, and normally-created gnome thieves are always generated hostile.

Two gnome thieves are placed randomly in each map for Minetown at level creation.

Gnome thieves have a 12 chance of being generated with one of the seven default weapon sets, with an equal probability for each: 3-14 darts, a crossbow and 3-14 crossbow bolts, a bow and 3-14 arrows, a stack of 3-5 daggers, an aklys, a short sword, or a club.[1]

Gnome thieves are eligible for offensive items, defensive items, and miscellaneous items.

Strategy

While their theft attack can be as annoying as those of nymphs, gnome thieves are little stronger than standard gnomes and will thankfully not teleport under any circumstance other than stealing an item from the hero.

Of note is that since gnome thieves are not considered gnomes, a gnomish hero in SLASH'EM can safely eat their corpses and avoid cannibalism penalties if they need a bit of nutrition in a pinch.
