A saw spear is a type of weapon that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. It is a one-handed slashing weapon that uses the spear skill and is made of iron. At skilled and expert it gains the stop thrust, lunge and bleed expert traits.
When applied the saw spear transforms into a long saw. Long saws are one-handed piercing/slashing weapons that use the farm implements skill and are made of iron. At skilled and expert skill it gains the bleed expert trait.
Long saws and saw spears count as serrated weapons, increasing elemental (worn rings/object properties) and some damage bonuses by 20% against monsters that have low DR. Note that this also applies to many types of additional, e.g. sneak attack, expert traits damage bonuses.

Generation
Long saws make up 1⁄1000 of weapons generated in the dungeon. Saw spears do not generate normally.
Undead hunters will find a long saw in their quest in the top-leftmost room to the right of the forge in 90% of their games.
Strategy
The main draw of the saw spear is the serrated damage bonus, however most characters won't benefit much from this unless they happen across one early on – or in the case of undead hunters – after they hit the quest. For characters that were planning to use either skill associated with this weapon it might be worthwhile using, however its relative simplicity and low damage output don't put it on par with some of the other options that will likely be contained in that very same quest box.
