An atlatl is a type of weapon that appears in dNetHack, notnotdNetHack, and notnotdNetHack. The atlatl is a medium-sized launcher that is one-handed for a medium-sized wielder, and is designed for throwing and firing spear weapons. It has a base material of wood, and appears as a notched stick when unidentified.
Xiuhcoatl is an artifact that can be invoked to transform it into an atlatl.
Generation
Atlatls are not randomly generated, although they may be wished for or found in bones.
The artifacts Fire Brand and Frost Brand can only be wished for or gifted in atlatl form to an Archeologist or Caveperson, and only Archeologists and Cavepeople can reshape the Brands into atlatls by dipping the chosen artifact into a forge or fountain respectively—this reshaping requires the hero to either have an atlatl in their inventory or be at least Skilled in spears.
Dracae Eladrin and Oona can forge atlatls for a hero that pays to request their services and gives them enough of their required material: Dracae Eladrin can grant the weapons they forge the acrid, sizzling, holy, or consecrated object properties, while Oona can grant the weapons she forges the crystalline, forge-hot or arcing object properties.
Atlatls have a base 1⁄28 chance of being generated inside Jrt Netjer hell vaults.
Second-sun spearthrowers are always generated with an atlatl and up to 10 javelins.
Description
An atlatl is used by wielding it and throwing or firing an appropriate spear weapon, and a hero shooting spears with an atlatl will gain three times the bonus from their strength. The following spear weapons can be launched by an atlatl:
- spears
- elven spears
- dwarvish spears
- orcish spears
- droven spears
- atgeirs
- javelins
- silverknight spears
- saw spears
A pest glaive that absorbs an atlatl has a 1⁄20 chance of inheriting its ability to throw spears.
