SLASH'EM
In SLASH'EM, Flame Mages and Necromancers may be given a ring of cold resistance as the random ring in their starting inventory.[3][4] Ice Mages start with cold resistance and will never be given a ring of cold resistance this way.[5] This also applies to SlashTHEM.
SporkHack
SporkHack uses a partial intrinsic system, allowing the ring of cold resistance and other items that grant extrinsics to remain useful for much longer.
dNetHack
In dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack, the ring of cold resistance gives a message when worn (though it does not auto-identify), and like all extrinsic sources of cold resistance it also protects open inventory from cold damage. In addition, extrinsic sources of resistance properties are much more desirable due to the temporary intrinsic system.

xNetHack
In xNetHack, extrinsic sources of cold resistance such as the ring completely protect a hero or monster's inventory from cold damage.
EvilHack
In EvilHack, the ring of cold resistance more useful in the short and long term, e.g. once the hero starts encountering casters that use the ice bolt monster spell—cold resistance and some other intrinsics are partial intrinsics as in SporkHack, and reflection no longer completely protects from the effects of cold rays.
The ring can be worthwhile to safely traverse the Ice Queen's Realm, as it blocks cold damage from the level itself and the attacks of several monsters within—beware of ice nymphs stealing the ring off your finger if you do not have full intrinsic resistance or a backup extrinsic source!
SlashTHEM
In SlashTHEM, in addition to SLASH'EM details, Acid Mages, Corsairs, Electric Mages, Nobles, and Pirates may be given a ring of cold resistance as the random ring in their starting inventory.
Hack'EM
In Hack'EM, Ice Mages cannot start with a ring of cold resistance as in SLASH'EM.
Intrinsic and extrinsic resistances function as in EvilHack, along with reflection.
