A yochlol, &, is a type of monster that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. The yochlol is a humanoid female major demon associated with the drow goddess Lolth that will randomly shift into various forms:

  • A stinking cloud, v
  • An unearthly drow, @
  • A demonic black widow, s

In all forms, yochlol are strong, amphibious, breathless, and can be seen via infravision. They will seek out items to pick up, and can follow the hero to other floors if they are adjacent—tame yochlol may also turn traitor. Yochlol are also completely immune to confusion and polymorph, are vulnerable to silver, and can be warded by the fully-reinforced Elder Elemental Eye. The yochlol's attacks, resistances and other traits depend on their current form:

Yochlol are poisonous to consume, which primarily comes up if they are digested by another monster or subjected to Ahazu (which bypasses the harmful effects of eating monsters). Yochlol that are somehow eaten or consumed in their unearthly drow form can grant sleep resistance, while those that are somehow eaten or consumed in their demonic black widow form can grant poison resistance.

The statlines for each of the yochlol's forms can be seen at the bottom section of this article.

Generation

Normally-created yochlol are usually created hostile and are only randomly generated in Gehennom, where they occur in either their base form or their unearthly drow form. None of their forms are valid polymorph forms or genocide targets.

Eight yochlol are placed in specific locations on the Avatar of Lolth's lair during level creation if it appears as the second Abyss level, with all of them being placed near Lolth herself—these yochlol appear in all four possible forms, with two yochlol each starting in a particular form.

Yochlol can be generated within several other areas in one of their four forms during level creation or under other circumstances, detailed in the tabbed section below.

Yochlol can appear as minions of Lolth: tame demon-form yochlol are only given as gifts to a female drow heroine.

Yochlol can be generated among the plague victims that are carried within sacks by hill giants on the Drow Healer quest.

Yochlol are always generated with the following items under normal circumstances, which occurs regardless of the form they are generated in and are sized to fit their humanoid forms:

They also have a chance each of being given a random offensive item, defensive item and miscellaneous item, with those chances lowered if the "rotten eyes" glyph is active.

Yochlol do not leave a corpse upon death in any form.

Origin

Yochlol are lesser demonic abominations from the Forgotten Realms D&D setting, known as the "Handmaidens of Lolth". They are natural shapeshifters that can take on oozing and gaseous forms, as well as arachnid and humanoid ones.
