Droven plate mail is a type of body armor that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. It is huge-sized armor with a default material of shadowsteel, and appears as crested black plate when unidentified or crested plate mail if the hero is also blind.

Generation

Drow Priests start each game with +0 droven plate mail that bears the symbol of their house if they are hedrow and bears the symbol of Lolth otherwise. Drow Rangers will receive droven plate mail in place of the role's standard cloak of displacement, and the mail bears the symbol of their house if they are hedrow and bears the symbol of Lolth otherwise. All other drow heroes that are not Madpeople start with knowledge of droven plate mail's appearance.

Droven plate mail is not randomly generated, though it can be wished for or found in bones. Droven plate mail can be forged by shadowsmiths.

Several drow and other monsters can be generated with droven plate mail:

  • Stjarna-alfr are always generated with droven plate mail that has the symbol of Eilistraee engraved on it.
  • A hedrow blademaster is always generated with droven plate mail that has the symbol of his house engraved on it.
  • Drow matrons, drow matron-mothers, and yochlol generated in unearthly drow form have a 78 chance of being generated with droven plate mail that has the symbol of Lolth engraved on it.
  • Myrkalfar matrons are always generated with non-cursed +8 droven plate mail that is made of black plastic and has the Last Bastion's symbol engraved on it.
  • Driders and sprow that are generated on the home level of any drow-related quest other than the Drow Healer quest are created with cursed erosion-proofed +3 droven plate mail that has the symbol of the character's starting house engraved on it. Other driders have a 25 chance of generating with droven plate mail.
  • Deminymphs that are randomly generated outside of the Drow Healer quest or the Lost Cities have an effective 1320 chance of being given a Dreamlands noble kit with droven plate mail that has an enchantment ranging from +1 to +3, a random drow house's symbol and a 140 chance of being made into an artifact. The symbol has a 110 chance of belonging to Pen'a, a 310 chance of being Eilistraee's symbol, and will otherwise belong to a random fallen drow house.
  • Giant spiders and cave lizards have a 1100 chance of generating with droven plate mail fitted to their body shape, while large cave lizards have a 3100 chance of generating with fitted droven plate mail.
  • Dokkalfar eternal matriarchs generated in the future (i.e. the Anachrononaut quest and Android quest) are generated with cursed +9 droven plate mail that has the symbol of their house engraved on it, while dokkalfar eternal matriarchs created elsewhere are generated with blessed and black-colored +9 mithril droven plate mail that has the symbol of their house engraved on it.

Description

While worn, droven plate mail grants 7 base AC, 7 base DR and MC3, and wearing or removing droven plate mail takes five actions. Droven plate mail is medium armor and grants a halved dexterity bonus to AC.

A hero 'reading' droven plate mail in their inventory will inspect any symbols engraved on the armor: as drow armor, this symbol will usually be the crest of a drow family's house—a hero that 'reads' the armor while hallucinating will see symbols that are completely random and sometimes non-existent, and certain individual suits of droven plate mail have a chance of displaying specific hallucinatory wards to a hallucinating hero.

As shadowsteel armor, droven plate mail may gradually erode during each turn that the wearer spends in lit squares until it is destroyed, with the chance of erosion being significantly reduced if they have a cloak that grants MC3—erosion from light will not occur if the wearer has invisibility, and erosion-proofed droven plate mail will gradually self-repair any evaporation from light while the wearer is not invisible and remains in an unlit square.
