In dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack, the drow Priest is a combination of race and role that is available to the hero, and the drow's Priest is markedly different from the standard Healer role in several aspects. Women are also known as drow Priestesses, while men are known as hedrow Priests, and both will always start as chaotic.
Starting equipment
Each drow Priest starts with distinct sets of equipment based on their gender, as detailed below.
Drow Priestesses receive the following equipment:

- +0 droven plate mail
- a +0 droven helm
- a +0 pair of high boots
- 4 potions of holy water
- 1-2 cloves of garlic
- 1-2 sprigs of wolfsbane
- 3 random spellbooks for clerical, divination, or healing spells of level 3 or lower, with at least 1 spellbook being blessed

- 1-2 uncursed sprigs of wolfsbane
- 2 random spellbooks for clerical, divination or healing spells of level 3 or lower
- a blessed wand of darkness
Both types of drow Priest start with knowledge of the potion of water and all drow equipment.
The drow Priest's default starting pet has a 2⁄3 chance of being a cave spider, and will otherwise be a baby cave lizard.
Intrinsics
Drow Priests gain the following intrinsic properties upon reaching the given experience levels:
- Level 4: Sleep resistance
- Level 15: Warning
- Level 20: Fire resistance

Drow Priests have 75 points to distribute among their starting attributes like most other Priests, while descendant drow Priests have a total of 65 to distribute.

Drow Priestesses start with Basic skill in whips, quarterstaffs and clerical spells, while hedrow Priests start with Basic skill in two-handed swords and clerical spells. They use the wisdom stat to cast spells, and their race's special spell is sleep—the special spell of drow Priestesses is create familiar, while the special spell of hedrow Priests is remove curse.
Special rules
The Priest's special rules apply for drow Priests, as do any special rules that apply to drow heroes in general.
Rank titles
Drow Priests are given their own rank titles on the status line for the corresponding experience levels, which are shared with other drow:
- XL 1-2: Wiu/Ligrr
- XL 3-5: Wanre/Wenress
- XL 6-9: Glenn/Kyorl
- XL 10-13: Elg'hasek/Venta'kyorl
- XL 14-17: Beldrar/An'kin
- XL 18-21: Helothann/Jallil
- XL 22-25: Linthar/Sil'in
- XL 26-29: Kas'ka/Qu'ess
- XL 30: Zil/Val'sharess
Gods
The drow Priest pantheon is also shared with other drow, rather than choosing an existing pantheon at random as with the default Priest.
- Lawful: Eilistraee
- Neutral: Kiaransali
- Chaotic: Lolth
Kiaransali acts as the vampire goddess for the pantheon, though this is only applicable if a vampiric hero converts using her altar.
Quest
Like many drow heroes, Drow Priests have different quests based on the hero's gender, as well as additional routes that they can take within the quests themselves:
- The base Drow Racial quest sees a female drow Priest fight Seyll Auzkovyn for Wrathful Spider, an artifact droven crossbow that is chaotic and favors drow. While carried, crossbow bolts gain three times the normal damage bonus from the hero's skill in crossbows, and a hero that is Expert in crossbows has their normal damage multiplied by 3 as well. While wielded, Wrathful Spider grants stealth, and is capable of firing up to 8 droven bolts in a single action—this can be capped manually by using n + f (with n being the desired cap) when firing. Each of the bolts fired from Wrathful Spider gets 1⁄2 of the normal damage bonus, with the volley's total damage being close to twice the base damage on average. Invoking Wrathful Spider can create ammo and generate a small stack of droven crossbow bolts.
- The Hedrow Racial quest sees a male drow Priest fight Daruth Xaxox for Spidersilk, an artifact set of droven chain mail that is made of "spidersilk" cloth and favors drow. While worn, Spidersilk grants 3 base AC and 4 DR, with a +2 bonus to both stats to make up for its lower protection compared to standard droven chain mail, and the wearer's unarmed attacks gain a sleep-inducing poison effect to the wearer's unarmed attacks. The wearer also gains double spell damage with ray and beam spells similar to The Magic Mirror of Merlin for Knights, and they cannot be trapped in webs; this does not interfere with the AC bonus given by The Black Web Entity for being "trapped" in a web.
- A drow Priest of either gender can betray their quest leader, Eclavdra, and join the faction of their former nemesis—this changes their objective to fighting Eclavdra for The Tentacle Rod, an artifact flail that is initially unaligned, but becomes lawful if the hero turns traitor. As a weapon, The Tentacle Rod only receives half the normal damage bonus from the hero's strength, and receives no damage bonus from their skill or from its enchantment—to-hit bonuses are applied as normal. While wielded, The Tentacle Rod has +1d7 to-hit and +1 damage bonuses, absorbs curses similar to Magicbane and acts as a spellcasting focus; while wielded or held in the offhand slot (even when not performing two weapon combat), the Rod has a 1⁄4 chance of lashing out against each adjacent hostile monster, and only one monster can be attacked this way per turn. Attacking with the Tentacle Rod via any means performs up to 7 strikes per swing, with varying effects depending on how many hits land:
- If it hits 3 or more times, it blinds, stuns or confuses the target.
- If it hits 6 or more times, it additionally slows the target, paralyzes them, or drives them insane.
- If it hits all 7 times, it also deals +d7 damage for each resistance property that the target lacks out of the following: shock resistance, acid resistance, poison resistance, drain resistance, and magic resistance. It also deals +2d7 if the monster has exactly one of either fire resistance or cold resistance, resulting in a maximum damage bonus of +7d7.
- Additionally, if a traitor drow Ranger retrieves The Tentacle Rod for their new quest leader, they can exchange it for another artifact: drow Priestesses can receive Crescent Blade, while hedrow Priests can receive Webweaver's Crook.
