Salamander (starting race)
The salamander is a playable race that is available to the hero in notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack, and is a playable counterpart of the salamander monster. A salamander hero will appear as : if the showrace option is set on, and is part of the lizard monster class.
Salamanders can be neutral or chaotic, and can be played as an Anachrononaut, Barbarian, Binder, Caveperson, Convict, Illithanachronounbinder, Madperson, Priest, Rogue, Ranger, or Wizard.
Racial benefits and restrictions
Salamanders are amphibian reptiles that double as elemental embodiments of fire, and both elemental and reptilian monsters are considered to be of the same race. They are among the physically stronger races with generally-solid attribute caps, though not nearly to the same degree as dwarves or half-dragons. Salamanders start with fire resistance and poison resistance, and gain additional attacks as they raise their experience level: a fiery 1d4 touch attack at experience level 7, a tail slap at experience level 10, and a fiery 1d4 holding attack at level 14. They can always reach Expert skill in spears, and their special spell is fireball.
Salamanders like fire and can not only survive in lava, but thrive within what would normally be a lethal hazard for any other hero: while within a lava square, salamander heroes gain hungerless regeneration and can fling balls of lava which gain level-based bonuses to damage and can burn down doors and melt ice within a 3x3 square centered on where the ball hits. Salamanders can secrete a pool of lava on their current square at the cost of half of their current HP—this cannot be used on squares with artifact doors, undiggable solid rock walls, either part of a drawbridge, any stair or ladder, any altar, or any square on the Plane of Water.
Gnomes and dwarves will always generate as hostile towards a salamander hero.
