A mask is a type of tool that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. It is an item worn on the face that depicts a specific monster, and has a base material of leather.
The mask is the base item for three artifacts:
- The Mask of Tlaloc, an artifact fanged mask of a god
- The War-mask of Durin, an artifact mask of a dwarf and the Dwarf Noble quest artifact
- Shiro's artifact, The Stone Mask, which only appears in notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack
- The Mirrored Mask, an artifact silver mask
Generation
All Samurai start the game with a human mask, which is made of mithril for yuki-onna Samurai and made of iron otherwise.
Masks make up 1⁄100 (1%) of all tools that are randomly generated on the ground, in general shops or as death drops. Hardware stores can also stock masks.
Six masks are generated on the Mordor Fortress level of the Mordor Ruins Quest during level creation, where they are placed within a chest in the room that lies beyond the throne room of the ogre emperor: a marilith mask, a cockatrice mask, a black dragon mask, a Faerinaal mask, a Gwynharwyf mask, and a Queen of Stars mask.
Some monsters are generated with masks, either of their monster type or of other monsters:
- Pharaohs are always generated with golden pharaoh masks.
- Nitocris is always generated with a cursed golden mask of a cobra.
- Lillends are frequently generated with a set of several masks: the two lillends generated in the lair of Lamashtu at level creation are always given a specific set of masks, while those generated on the Elemental Planes are given the masks of appropriate "nasties" for that plane—all other lillends are generated with six masks of random applicable monsters.
Garo have a 1⁄100 chance of dropping a garo mask upon death.
Description
A hero applying a mask will put it on or remove it. If the hero is polymorphed while wearing a mask, they will transform into that monster if it is a valid polymorph form, and will otherwise turn into a random monster as normal. Worn masks cover the face and take up the "eyes" slot, preventing the use of other similar items such as a pair of lenses while wearing a mask.
Certain monsters that wear masks, such as lillends, can use the same attack routines as the monster depicted by their worn mask.
Strategy
Worn masks can be used to minimize damage from unexpected polymorph traps, and are often employed to hide marks from the hero binding spirits such as Andromalius and Astaroth.
Lillends are among the most dangerous mask-wearing monsters due to their ability to copy the attacks of the depicted monster—the ones generated on Lamashtu's level may carry masks of incredibly deadly monsters, such as sartan tannin or even Demogorgon.
