Chaos
- This article is about the monster in dNetHack and its variants. For the alignment as a whole, see chaotic.
Chaos, &, is the quest nemesis of the Chaos Temple Quest in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. He is a human-turned-major demon who guards The Black Crystal and the third Key of Chaos, and is an overlord to his kind. Chaos is breathless, capable of flight with his wings, can see invisible, is capable of seeing in the light and the dark, can be seen via infravision, has basic skill in martial combat, and can destroy doors and tear through webs. Chaos has 13 points of AC, all in the natural category, along with 5 points of natural damage reduction.
Chaos is covetous and desires the Crystals and the hero's quest artifact. Chaos also gains additional abilities depending on whether or not the guardians of the other four Crystals are slain:
- Normally, Chaos has a weapon attack, a second offhand weapon attack, and two claw attacks that can steal quest artifacts from the hero, and 2⁄3 of the time he will instead cast a monster spell arcanely using two different spell lists.
- The first list uses the following spells in order: Blizzaga, Thundaga, drain ability, cure self, Firaga, ice storm, haste self, and Flare.
- The second list uses the following spells in order: earth crack, fire pillar, geyser, and poison gas.
- If Lich, the Fiend of Earth is still alive:
- The weakening spell is replaced with a touch of death.
- The ice storm spell used in the first spell list is replaced by warp blades.
- The earth crack spell is replaced by Flare.
- If Kary, the Fiend of Fire is still alive:
- If Kraken, the Fiend of Water is still alive:
- Chaos gains a passive attack that chooses randomly from an unholy-damage bite, a study-inducing gaze, a clerical monster spell that has an equal probability of being evil eye or curse items, and a blinding venom spit attack with an equal probability of each.
- The geyser spell is replaced by an ice storm spell.
- If Tiamat, the Fiend of Wind is still alive:
- Chaos gains 6 points of natural AC.
- Chaos can deflect non-futuristic projectiles by changing their trajectory.
- The poison gas spell is replaced by a plague spell.
Chaos has every resistance property minus magic resistance and reflection, and has a weakness to silver like other demons.
Chaos is poisonous to eat and grants poison resistance when eaten, which primarily comes up if he is subjected to the spirit Ahazu (whose abduction ability ignores detrimental effects of eaten monsters).
