Crystal gauntlets are a type of gloves that appear in dNetHack, notnotdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. They is a small item that have a default material of glass, and appear as "gauntlets" with their material displayed when unidentified.
Generation
Crystal gauntlets are not randomly generated and cannot be duplicated by any form of smithing, but they can be wished for or found in bones.
The artifacts Fire Brand and Frost Brand can be wished for in the form of crystal gauntlets, and can be reshaped into 'crystal' gauntlets by dipping the chosen artifact into a forge or fountain respectively—this reshaping requires the hero to have formally identified the item.
Locations
A pair of blessed +0 crystal gauntlets is placed within each of the 8 trapped Shiere Eladrin statues on the last level of the Law quest during level creation.
A pair of crystal gauntlets is generated on the Mordor Fortress level of the Mordor Ruins Quest, where it is placed within the gauntlet-filled chest in the room that lies beyond the throne room of the Mordor marshal during level creation.
Crystal gauntlets can be generated in the magic item vaults that appear within the Avatar of Lolth's lair during level creation if it appears as the second Abyss level.
A pair of blessed and shatterproof +1 crystal gauntlets is generated on the Drow Healer quest, where it is placed in a sack two rooms to the right of the lawful altar on the third level during level creation.
Monster starting inventory
Some monsters can be generated with crystal gauntlets.
- Tulani Eladrin generated outside of the Elemental Planes have a 3⁄4 chance of being generated with a blessed shatterproof pair of crystal gauntlets. If the hero has at least 1 point of insight, there is a Insight7 chance of future Tulani Eladrin that generate being given special holy equipment: those generated on the Elemental Planes have a 1⁄4 chance of being generated with a shatterproof +3 pair of crystal gauntlets, which have a 1⁄5 chance of a gemstone object material (with an equal probability of opal, star sapphire or diamond) and a 1⁄5 chance of being made of obsidian—they will otherwise be made of glass. Tulani Eladrin generated outside of the Elemental Planes after the hero gains insight only have a 1⁄20 chance of receiving this gear.
- Gae Eladrin have a 1⁄6 chance of being generated with a pair of blessed 'crystal' gauntlets, with the gemstone type being one of the following: emerald (2⁄3 chance, or 33.3%), ruby (1⁄12 chance, or 8.33%), jacinth (1⁄12 chance, or ~8.33%), topaz (1⁄24 or ~4.17%), or diamond (1⁄24 chance, or ~4.17%).
- Brighid Eladrin are always generated with a blessed shatterproof obsidian pair of crystal gauntlets.
- Mind flayerss and master mind flayers will generate with obsidian 'crystal 'gauntlets if they are created for githyanki and githzerai Kensei while they are at least experience level 14, have successfully created The Amalgamated Skies through merging, or are on the Kensei quest. The enchantment of these gauntlets will be +4 for mind flayers and +6 for master mind flayers.
- Erinyes that are generated in Gehennom or slated for good equipment have a 1⁄5 chance of generating with an equipment set that includes a pair of crystal gauntlets.
- Ancients of ice are always generated with a large pair of crystal gauntlets.
- Alrunes has a 1⁄2 chance of being generated with an equipment set that includes a pair of crystal gauntlets.
- The lilitu disguised as an aligned priest that is found tending to a coaligned temple in the lair of the Avatar of Lolth (if it appears as the second Abyss level in Gehennom) is always generated with crystal gauntlets upon transforming.
- Player monster anachrononauts and noblemen slated for "good" equipment are always generated with crystal gauntlets. The gauntlets have a 1⁄3 chance of being shatterproof, and otherwise there is a 1⁄2 chance (effectively 1⁄3 total) of the gauntlets being greased. The gauntlets have a 1⁄3 chance of being cursed followed by a 1⁄3 chance of being blessed, and they will otherwise be uncursed. Their enchantment has a 3⁄5 (60%) chance of ranging from +0 to +4, a 3⁄10 chance of ranging from +4 to +7, and a 10% chance of ranging from -1 to -3.
- Ymir is always generated with a gigantic +7 pair of crystal gauntlets when summoned by an Illithanachronounbinder.
Description
While worn, crystal gauntlets grant 2 base AC and 4 base DR. Like other crystal armor, it can be safely enchanted from +5 to reach +7 (similar to elven armor) and gains a full bonus to AC and DR from its enchantment, up to 9 AC and 11 DR at +7. Wearing or taking off crystal gauntlets takes two turns.
Crystal gauntlets are fragile and may shatter when thrown, kicked or dropped from a height (e.g. while levitating) unless they are made erosion-proof—a force bolt spell or a zapped wand of striking will destroy any crystal shields on the ground in the path of the beam.
As rigid gloves, worn crystal gauntlets incur a -2 to-hit penalty when firing a bow.
Due to being translucent, crystal gauntlets do not hide the mark of the spirit known as Mother while she is bound, but they do allow the use of her Disgusted Gaze power.
History
Crystal gauntlets are introduced in dNetHack version 3.13.
