The crystal gauntlets are a type of gloves that appear in dNetHack, notnotdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. It is a small item that has a default material of glass, and appears as "gauntlets" when unidentified.

Generation

Crystal gauntlets are not randomly generated and cannot be duplicated by any form of smithing, but they can be wished for or found in bones.

Fire Brand is an artifact long sword that can be reshaped into a pair of crystal gauntlets if crystal gauntlets have been formally identified.

A pair of blessed +0 crystal gauntlets is placed within each of the 8 trapped Shiere Eladrin statues on the last level of the Law quest during level creation.

A pair of crystal gauntlets is generated on the Mordor Fortress level of the Mordor Ruins Quest, where it is placed within the gauntlet-filled chest in the room that lies beyond the throne room of the Mordor marshall during level creation.

Crystal gauntlets can be generated in the magic item vaults that appear within the Avatar of Lolth's lair during level creation if it appears as the second Abyss level.

A pair of blessed shatterproof +1 crystal gauntlets will be generated contained in a sack on the third level of the Drow Healer quest. It is located two rooms to the right of the lawful altar.

If a Githzerai or Githyanki Kensei is either above experience level 13, have successfully merged the skies artifacts into The Amalgamated Skies or are in their quest, Mind flayers and master mind flayers will generate with obsidian crystal gauntlets. The enchantment of these gauntlets will be +4 for mind flayers and +6 for master mind flayers.

Some monsters can be generated with crystal gauntlets:

  • Tulani Eladrin generated outside of the End Game have a 34 chance of being generated with a blessed shatterproof pair of crystal gauntlets.
    • After the hero obtains 1 insight there is a Insight7 chance of future Tulani Eladrin that generate to be given special holy equipment: in the End Game, they have a 14 chance of being generated with a shatterproof holy holy-weapon +3 pair of crystal gauntlets. These have a 15 chance of being made of gemstone (opal, star sapphire or diamond) and a 15 chance of being made of obsidian instead of glass. Tulani Eladrin generated outside of the End Game, after obtaining insight, instead only have a 120 chance of receiving this gear.
  • Gae Eladrin have a 16 chance of being generated with a pair of blessed gemstone gauntlets. The gem-type used will be one of: emerald (23 or 33.3%), ruby (112 or 8.3%), jacinth (112 or 8.3%), topaz (124 or 4.2%), or diamond (14 or 25%).
  • Shiere Eladrin are always generated with a pair of blessed shatterproof crystal gauntlets.
  • Brighid Eladrin are always generated with a blessed shatterproof obsidian pair of crystal gauntlets.
  • Erinys generated in gehennom or that are generated as prisoner have a 15 chance of being generated with a pair of crystal gauntlets on, either being worn or stored in the throne room's chest.
  • Player monster anachrononauts are always generated with a pair of crystal gauntlets: the gauntlets have a 13 chance of being shatterproof, and otherwise there is a 12 chance (effectively 13 total) of the gauntlets being greased. The gauntlets have a 13 chance of being cursed followed by a 13 chance of being blessed, and they will otherwise be uncursed. Their enchantment has a 35 chance of ranging from +0 to +4, a 310 chance of ranging from +4 to +7, and will otherwise range from -1 to -3.
  • Player monster noblemen generated on the Astral Plane will always be generated with a pair of crystal gauntlets: the gauntlets have a 13 chance of being shatterproof, and otherwise there is a 12 chance (effectively 13 total) of the gauntlets being greased. The gauntlets have a 13 chance of being cursed followed by a 13 chance of being blessed, and they will otherwise be uncursed. Their enchantment has a 35 chance of ranging from +0 to +4, a 310 chance of ranging from +4 to +7, and will otherwise range from -1 to -3.
  • The false priest lilitu in Lolth's lair is generated with a pair of crystal gauntlets.
  • Ancients of ice are always generated with a large pair of crystal gauntlets.
  • Alrunes is always generated with a pair of crystal gauntlets.
  • In notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack, Ymir is always generated with a gigantic +7 pair of crystal gauntlets when summoned by an Illithanachronounbinder.

Description

While worn, crystal gauntlets grant 2 base AC and 4 base DR and take 2 turns to put on or remove. Like other crystal gear, the gauntlets gain a doubled bonus to AC and DR from their enchantment, up to 9 AC and 11 DR at +7. They can also be safely enchanted from +5 to reach +7, similar to high-elven gauntlets. Unless made shatterproof, crystal gauntlets are subject to shattering when thrown, kicked or dropped from a height. Crystal gauntlets incur a -2 accuracy penalty on firing a bow, like all metallic gloves.
